10 Sep 2007For those who chose to watch the Democrats spar bilingually instead of the MTV Video Music Awards last night, Shakira and Beyonce won a moonman for the above collaboration. The exact name of the category is Most Earth Shattering Collaboration. My earth wasn’t shattered , but what do I know.

“To the left, to the left”
“Everything you own in a box to the left”
I shamefully admit that I love Beyonce’s Irreplaceable. And when I heard she’d be doing the song in Spanish, I imagined some terrible lyrics like “A la izquierda, a la izquierda”. Those aren’t the lyrics, but the real ones aren’t much better (video after the jump).
Today she launches her new Spanish album “Irreemplazable” with versions of her English-language hits, including duets with Alejandro Fernandez and Shakira, reports Venezuela’s El Universal.

Late last year we told you about Beyonce’s foray into Spanish language singing on a duet with Shakira. Well, the video’s been out for a while, but now Shaki is clucking about what a polyglot Beyonce has become, and the experience of working with her overall:
Shak told MTV, “(Beyonce) has a very good accent when she sings in Spanish and I think anything that she wants to do she will do just fine, because she is a very determined and focused woman and that is something to admire. She is a great artist.”She added, “I am very happy and very excited about (working with Bey). I have just finished shooting a video with her. It was a fantastic experience to work with her, to get to know her as the great artist that she is.
“She is an amazing performer and also a sweet person and a very nice human being and I am so thrilled and thankful for her invitation. It was her idea to make me a part of her album and it has been wonderful.”
God, that’s a lot of booty-kissing. Why is a superstar like Shaki acting like she’s humbled by Beyonce’s greatness?
If you still haven’t seen the video, check it out after the jump.

Nelly Furtado is pretty hot right now, and she seems to know that recording in English and en español a la Shakira is hot, too, as she’s in the midst of recording a CD in Spanish:
“I’m in the midst of recording a Latin album,” Furtado revealed when she stopped by the MTV offices Wednesday. “It’s like, ‘Wow, I’m writing a song in Spanish.’ It’s really bizarre, but really great.”Furtado, who grew up speaking Portuguese, didn’t learn Spanish until she was in high school at age 14. Although she has sung a few songs in Spanish already (such as “Te Busqué” on Loose), this is the first time she’s attempted to write songs in Spanish from scratch.
Like Beyonce, Nelly might also be after a piece of the Latino wallet, but at least her first attempt at recording in Spanish with Juanes yielded a great song. I’m not a huge fan but anxious to hear what she comes up with.

In an interview posted now on Univision.com, Beyonce talks about feeling close to Latina culture, in part thanks to her upbringing in Houston, Texas. She’s trying to do a reverse cross-over and recording in Spanish because she thinks that Spanish is a “sexy” language (and no doubt because she thinks Latino money is sexy too). She admits to being a fan of fellow Texan Selena and Shakira, whom she worked with on the single “Beautiful Liar”.
