Reading this was smile inducing:

That’s why what the Phoenix Suns are doing is so amazing.

The team will be wearing its “Los Suns” jerseys for Wednesday night’s Game 2 against the San Antonio Spurs “to honor [the] Latino community and the diversity of our league, the state of Arizona, and our nation.” Awesome.

The decision to wear the jerseys came from way up the corporate ladder, as team owner Robert Sarver suggested the team wear their Noche Latina alternates.

Sarver, who was born and raised in Tucson, said frustration with the federal government’s failure to deal with the illegal immigration issue led to the passage of what he called “a flawed state law.”

“However intended, the result of passing the law is that our basic principles of equal rights and protection under the law are being called into question,” he said, “and Arizona’s already struggling economy will suffer even further setbacks at a time when the state can ill-afford them.”

I don’t doubt for a minute that the boycott threat motivated this rather than principles–but even so, it’s good to see that grass roots mobilization does work every once in a while (notice that in the case of Arizona, there are *consequences* for those targeted by protests, something that is sorely lacking at DC marches and even most May Day marches).

Now we just need to take this lesson to heart in other aspects of the pro-immigration community.

Well, I can’t say I was surprised to read the following news over at Think Progress. Apparently, there’s a whole bunch of white folks that don’t like Teh Crotch Grabbing Gun Toting Basketball Playing Colored Boy. So they started up a basketball league that is officially designated “whites only.” Yes, I’m serious. To play in the league, you must have two “Caucasian” parents and be a *natural born* citizen (not *legal*). Because these white folks were smart enough to realize that there is such a thing as white Latinos.

From Think Progress:

A new professional basketball league called the All-American Basketball Alliance (AABA) sent out a press release on Sunday saying that it intends to start its inaugural season in June, with teams in 12 U.S. cities. However, the AABA is different from other sports leagues because only players who are “natural born United States citizens with both parents of Caucasian race are eligible to play in the league.” AABA commissioner Don “Moose” Lewis insists that he’s not racist, but he just wants to get away from the “street-ball” played by “people of color” and back to “fundamental basketball.” Lewis cited the recent incidents of bad behavior by NBA players, implying that such actions would never happen with white players.

Because, you know–you can’t make RULES that state “no fucking street ball.” No, you have to attribute basketball playing STYLES to a genetic/biological trait.

Sigh. Sometimes dealing with the news is just more than any human being could possibly bear.

Sun Ming Ming, world’s tallest player, on Mexican team

intming.jpgThe world’s tallest basketball player isn’t superstar Yao Ming, it’s his countryman Sun Ming Ming, who, instead of joining the NBA is starting his professional career in Mexico. Sun Ming Ming (seen arriving in Monterrey in the image) has just joined Monterrey’s Fuerza Regia, where he will play for at least a year.

Sun Ming Ming had already played on a few minor league teams here in the U.S., among them the ABA’s Maryland Nighthawks, but has decided to take a detour from his goal of joining an NBA team and try his luck on Fuerza Regia.

Garcia: Latino pride or Latino marketing?

5:41 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · California|Dominicans|Marketing|Sports · Comments Off

32499.jpegThe Sacramento Kings are all giddy about the latest addition to their team. “We’ve finally got a Spanish speaker!”, they proclaim. Some California Latinos are fired up with cultural pride, and it seems the Kings have dollar signs in their eyes. The headline from the Sacramento Bee’s article on the matter seems to say the same thing: “García is Kings’ ticket into Latino market”.

What’s weird to me is that Garcia is a Dominican from New York. Not exactly the market anyone is trying to court out here in California. But then again, to marketers, if your name is Garcia it doesn’t matter if you are from Mexico or Minnesota.
