sanctuaryeye1Some of the most important work I have done in the past year has been working with other people on building movement through justice media. And while it is done out great love, not to become famous or even recognized as an “important voice” in a careerist sense, it’s nice to be recognized.

The Sanctuary (ProMigrant.Org) will be receiving an award that, in 2006, Hillary Rodham Clinton described as “the equivalent of the “Pulitzer Prize” for journalism (including New Media of course) in ethnic media!

Felicidades to the entire Sanctuary – Promigrant.org team y pa’lante siempre.

Mexico City to welcome MTV Latin Music Awards

2:40 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Events| Media| Music| mexico · Comments Off

26 Jul 2007

mtvtu6.gifMexico City is becoming a destination for high-profile events. Most recently, the Mexican capital was the site of the Miss Universe pageant, and last year the MTV Latin Music Awards. This year the awards will be back in the Distrito Federal, something that makes the city’s mayor very proud:

“For the second time we’re going to have the awards here in Mexico City….it’s the only city that’s hosted the awards for two years,” said Ebrard congratulating himself.

Calm yourself, it’s not the Oscars. But it does sound like it’s shaping up to be a memorable show. Cafe Tacuba is said to be headlining, and the city will set up 16 giant screens all over the city so that everyone can watch on October 18th.

You can’t blame Ebrard for being happy. According to Peru’s RPP, the awards are supposed to bring in $30 million for the city.

Shakira sweeps “Oye!” awards

In a replay of her successes at so many other awards events, VL’s Most Influential Latina 2006, Shakira sweeped Mexico’s “Oye!” Awards, taking home 4 awards and “a special award for social values”, according to Spain’s El Mundo newspaper. She looks pretty darned happy in this photo, via AP.

1160156097_extras_fotos_gente_0.jpgPobrecita Julieta Venegas left empty-handed after being nominated in several categories.

In other Shakira news:

Pop diva Shakira will donate the proceeds from a concert in her hometown to build an arts school for 1,800 children forced to flee their homes by Colombia’s civil war.

The concert, part of her worldwide Oral Fixation tour, will held Nov. 15 in the Caribbean port city of Barranquilla and is being billed as a festive homecoming for the hip-shaking international superstar who last month was nominated for five Latin Grammy awards.

The school will be called “Pies Descalzos” after the Shakira album of the same name, and her charitable organization.

ricky_martin_150b.jpgWell, he didn’t make VL’s Most Influential Latino list, but Ricky Martin is getting props anyway. The Latin Recording Academy is honoring Ricky as its “Person of the Year” for being a great “entertainer and humanitarian:

“The 34-year-old Puerto Rican pop star will receive the honor at a dinner and concert in New York City on Nov. 1. A portion of the evening’s proceeds will benefit Martin’s charitable efforts.

“His musical accomplishments are matched by his endeavors as an advocate for the welfare of children around the world,” Latin Recording Academy President Gabriel Abaroa said in a statement Thursday. “It is a great pleasure to honor this man of limitless talent, passion and sense of caring.”

Among other charitable endeavours, Ricky is involved in campaigns to combat internet predators and sex trafficking of children.

Thalia gets a diamond

04f.jpgHey, all you haters who think Thalia is talentless, you better shut your mouths because she’s sold more records than most legit performers. Thalia was just awarded a diamond record by her label, EMI, for having sold 10 million albums.

The award was presented by her label EMI Music, in Miami before record industry personalities. The singer, accompanied by her husband Tommy Mottola and blue-eyed Carlos Ponce, among others, dedicated her success to her mother and to producer Emilio Estefan.

Maybe recognizing la Thalis‘ accomplishment will win me some favor in the eyes of all of the Thalia fans who attacked me for writing this post.

Alma awards winners (kind of)

alma_longoria170x225.jpgThe NCLR Alma Awards, yet another Latino awards event that deemed VL not worthing of inviting, took place last night in Los Angeles. Hosted by Eva Longoria, the awards were attended by a whos-who list of Latino celebs. Check out some great photos at Spain’s El Mundo.

Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find a press release announcing the winners, and the website has not been updated to reflect the results of the awards. I guess they are wanting to keep results under wraps until the show airs on June 5th, but a bit chafa, if you ask me.

The L.A. Times’ Tom O’Neil apparently had the same problem, but he’s done some of the dirty work to put together a list of some of the people who received an Alma award last night. Here’s a taste, then visit Tom’s blog for more:

BEST ACTOR IN A FILM
Clifton Collins, Jr. “Capote”
Benicio Del Toro, “Sin City”
X – Michael Pena, “Crash”

BEST ACTRESS IN A FILM
America Ferrera, “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”
X – Q’Orianka Kilcher, “The New World”
Eva Mendes, “Hitch”

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A FILM
(Winner unknown)
Jessica Alba, “Sin City”
Elpidia Carrillo, “Nine Lives”
Rosario Dawson, “Rent”

a167[1].jpg10:37: Andy Andy and Lu present “Best Rock en espanol artist”.

WINNER: JUANES!

Juanes is so great. “Todas mis canciones tienen un nombre y ese nombre es Colombia”. (Tearing up)

10:40: Okay some dumbasses are dancing “el perreo” in their evening gowns and tuxes. Where is Don Omar in all this? Best “Cancion genero urbano”. Oh, there’s Don Omar, nominated.

WINNER: Daddy Yankee! Why did this fool just call him “Danny Yankee”? Here we go with the subtitles again…”que tengamos los huevos reales…” WTF?

10:43: Paty is saying some oh-so-cliche crap about all Latinos loving their family and getting along perfectly. It’s an intro to a performance by Ana Barbara performing with…her siblings??? Huh?

Dude, her nose is unreal. I mean, I am biased because I hate her, but what is up with her nose? Wait…her bro has the same nose…so it’s not surgery!!!!!!!! Revelation of the year!!! She’s singing “Fruta prohibida” or something. Now some banda action with her bros. This is boring the hell out of me.

Man, these awards are LOOONG…

a167[1].jpg10:17: WINNER: Laura Pausini is “Best Female Pop Artist” of the year. Okay, I don’t love her music but her personality is awesome. She’s proud to sing in Spanish. So cute.

10:18: Oh my God, I know they didn’t just call Sergio Goyri “el gran actor”. What standards are they using? “Grandes estrellas de peliculas de narcotraficantes”? Okay, here we go, “Banda” of the Year…

WINNER: Banda El Recodo…does anyone else ever win this?

Poncho accepted the award without the rest of the band…what up with that?

10:20: The ads…I’m bored of them…sorry…

10:24: Video of the year…didn’t catch who was presenting…Oh, God, again with Laura Pausini…Luis Fonsi…Luis Miguel…SHAKIRA!…Vico C…Anasol…

WINNER: Luis Fonsi!

He’s looking mighty surprised. “Mucha gracia May-ami!” Is he enanito? He looks so short. Dedicates the award to his “coco”. Some dumb chick in the audience gets caught using her phone on camera.

10:27: “Grupo aerobatico antigravity” doing some acrobatics with some reggaeton peeps…sorry, I’m ignorant, who are these people? I can only distinguish Daddy Yankee…Pretty awesome light show and choreography, whoever they are. “Racata…rrracataa….si se me pega voy a darle”. Thank God for Closed Captioning for the hearing impaired.
