Hugo Chavez Hearts Obama

After all that hate, then some awkward moments, Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez appears to be warming up to Barack Obama…if you consider calling Obama more leftist than he and Fidel Castro showing love (and I do). Reuters reports:

Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez said on Tuesday that he and Cuban ally Fidel Castro risk being more conservative than U.S. President Barack Obama as Washington prepares to take control of General Motors Corp.

During one of Chavez’s customary lectures on the “curse” of capitalism and the bonanzas of socialism, the Venezuelan leader made reference to GM’s bankruptcy filing, which is expected to give the U.S. government a 60 percent stake in the 100-year-old former symbol of American might.

“Hey, Obama has just nationalized nothing more and nothing less than General Motors. Comrade Obama! Fidel, careful or we are going to end up to his right,” Chavez joked on a live television broadcast.

Chavez’s message is not lost on Republicans, who were quick to jump on Obama’s bones for the move. Check out the RNC’s video attacking Obama after the jump. Read more…

Obama speaks on the auto industry

As somebody who lives in the Midwest, it’s been pretty upsetting and horrifying (yes, horrifying) to see what is going on with the auto industry and the economy. While banks can feel free to suck money from taxpayers so that they can then *loan* taxpayers that same money back to us–the auto industry (which provides actual jobs by which taxpayers can feed our kids and pay banks money so banks can loan it back to us), is being whipped like a dead horse.

Obama just pressured the GM CEO to resign–a sign of stregnth, yes, except that the person replacing the CEO is another GM guy.

Obama’s going to be speaking about his plans for the auto industry in minutes. Tune in here.

U.S. Auto Industry Hits Pause as They Await $

chrysler_lg.JPGAfter the U.S. Congress failed to come up with a deal for the country’s top auto makers, the companies are taking drastic steps to save money and survive.

Chrysler said it would extend the normal two-week holiday shutdown that begins Friday to at least Jan. 19 at all 30 of its factories due to slumping sales. They and General Motors were looking for Congress to approve $14 billion in loans.

Chrysler spokesman Dave Elshoff said four plants will be temporarily closed beyond Jan. 19: two plants in Toledo, Ohio, and one each in Ontario and Detroit.

Workers at the shuttered factories will get their regular vacation pay for the scheduled two week shut down. For the extended shut down, the workers will be hitting the unemployment rolls and also receive a supplement from the company, earning 85 percent of their normal pay.

Colombia Trade Deal Answers

So, if you’re like me and you tend to decide things without really having a full grasp of a situation, but can sense on a gut level why something is wrong–I found this article in the NYT’s about the Colombian Trade Agreement, Obama and Bush, and why there is so much tension around the whole thing. It answered a lot of my questions and helped me to further see and understand Erwin and LC’s separate thoughts–although I think that the article is incredibly lacking in explaining the Agreement from Colombia’s perspective–whether the perspective be from a unionist point of view or a ‘free trade’ point of view.

An excerpt:

Mr. Bush has drawn his line at the automakers’ doors, having already been forced to shelve the free-market principles of his Republican Party to bail out the financial industry over the past two months. But Republicans say he would acquiesce in aid to automakers in return for Congress’s ratification of the Colombia pact and pending trade agreements with Panama and South Korea.

I still am inclined to believe that there’s nothing good about free trade, especially when it can be used to justify the silencing of violence against workers–but I am open to continuing to think about it.
