22 Jun 2009Along with celeb Mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom, L.A.’s Latino mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (and co-star of telenovela-like love dramas) had his sights set on becoming the Governor of the great state of California, but today has announced that he’s bowing out:
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced on national television today he would not be running for California governor in 2010 after flirting with a bid for higher office for months.Elected to a second, four-year term in March, the mayor told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that he wanted to devote his full attention to Los Angeles, which is facing its worst fiscal crisis in decades.
Villaraigosa’s decision adds a dash of clarity to the race for the 2010 Democratic gubernatorial nomination which, at the moment, appears will be between state Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. Brown has yet to say if he will run, while Newsom already has announced his candidacy.
The L.A. Times attributes the bow-out to the Mayor’s low approval ratings – 55% on the job he’s currently doing as mayor in L.A. — and the fact that historically, Los Angeles mayors have had a very hard time at gaining support in their quest for Governor of California. Oh, and the $530 million deficit for the city in fiscal year 2009.
Meanwhile, Mr. Villaraigosa was just re-elected as Mayor of the great city of L.A., which apparently means he has a lot of trabajo to do.
Any L.A. reader want to let us know the real deal? Is L.A.’s crisis just an excuse? Did Villaraigosa ever even have a chance to be governor? What’s his report card for L.A. looking like? Let us know in the comments.

While Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa gets to keep his gig after having an affair, the woman he had an affair with isn’t so lucky. Mirthala Salinas, gets her suspension lifted but returns to work on Monday at Telemundo KVEA-TV Channel 52’s Inland Empire bureau in Riverside as a general assignment reporter instead of as the L.A. fill in anchor. Doesn’t seem fair does it? It takes two to tango last time I checked.

Last month Jennifer wrote about Latino Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and his other women, local Telemundo reporter Mirthala Salinas. Yesterday her network announced that Salinas has been suspended from her job for two months for violating conflict-of-interest policies also known as being a descarada. Mirthala Salinas was having the relationship with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa when she announced the news of his separation from his wife of 20 years on local Telemundo station KVEA, Channel 52.
sal. Three other Telemundo employees also were disciplined, likely for knowing and not telling. Villaraigosa, of course gets to keep working which is why he so smugly stated:
I regret that decisions I have made in my personal life have been a distraction for the city, and I am deeply sorry that I have let so many people down, especially my family. Now that Telemundos internal review has reached a conclusion, it is my hope that we can all move forward.

Los Angeles mayor and grandson of Mexican immigrants is telling students and their parents that skipping out on school on Monday, May 1st, the day of the national boycott, should not be an option. This is a backstep from the active urging he did for the million plus people rally in downtown L.A. on March 25. The statement signed by Villaraigosa, cardinal Roger Mahony, and Los Angeles Unified School District Supervisor Roy Romer reads :
We support the celebration of our liberty as American citizens to freely, responsibly and legally express ourselves. We firmly believe children must attend school everyday, including May 1, they have to be there ready to learn.

It took President Bush all of about 8 minutes to mention 9-11, weapons of mass destruction, and Bin Laden, making the war on terrorism and the war in Iraq central themes in last night’s State of the Union Address. The speech, which lasted a little under an hour, had a minute or two about what’s on the mind of most Latinos, immigration. Bush said he understood that immigrants play an important role in the economy of the United States but stood firm in promoting his visiting worker program and offering no amnesty to undocumented immigrants.
Perhaps the biggest difference in this year’s State of the Union Address was that there were two official Democratic reactions. One came in English from Tom Kaine, the Governor of Virginia and one in Spanish from Antonio Villaraigosa, the mayor of Los Angeles.
