A Tale of Two Rallies : Latinos Speak for and Against Marriage Equity in NYC

19 May 2009Andrés Duque from Blabbeando has some great video and pictures from two very different rallies that took place this past Sunday here in NYC. Both rallies dealt with the lives of GLBT people and both had Latinos speaking on the issues.
First here’s Ugly Betty‘s Ana Ortiz (no relation), speaking at a rally organized by Broadway Impact and co-sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign, the Empire State Pride Agenda, Marriage Equality New York, the Civil Rights Front and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS
Ugly Betty Actors Think Hate is Ugly : Vote No on Prop 8

28 Oct 2008Three stars of the TV show Ugly Betty think there is nothing uglier than discrimination and that’s why they stepped up to appear in an ad against Proposition 8 in California.
Voting no on Prop 8 is not just about gay rights,” said America Ferrera. “It’s about preserving the integrity of equal rights in this country. This is not about being gay or straight, it’s about being American. Vote no on Prop 8.”
“Family is very important to Latinos,” said Tony Plana. “Prop 8 discriminates against families and everything we stand for. I encourage all Californians to vote NO on this divisive and unfair proposition.”
“Like all Americans, Latinos have family members and friends who are gay and deserve the same rights all of us have,” said Ana Ortiz. “Prop 8 would take away those rights and that’s why we urge all Californians to vote NO.”
Prop 8 would eliminate the fundamental right for same-sex couples to marry.
