11 Mar 2010***SPOILERS AHEAD***
It seems like it was only yesterday that Mala and I were tweeting that we were surprised we had not been invited to a screening of the upcoming film Our Family Wedding featuring America Ferrera, Carlos Mencia, Regina King, and Forest Whitaker. Then all of a sudden an invitation falls into my inbox! I’ll admit that when I started to see the trailers on television I just took a deep sigh as the images and storyline lead one to believe that it will focus on the racism that Latinos have towards Black people. And ya’ll know how I feel about that already.
The film follows Lucia performed by America Ferrera (Ugly Betty) who is attending Law School at Columbia University in NYC where she meets her fiancé Marcus performed by Lance Gross (House Of Payne, Meet The Browns), who is seeking a medical degree at the same University. We meet them as they are packing to head back to LA to visit family and announce they are getting married. Dating for less than one year, Marcus is excited to share his decision and love for Lucia with his single-father who raised him, Brad, performed by Forest Whitaker (Last King Of Scotland), who is one of LA’s most eligible bachelors ad a well known radio personality. Lucia however, is very concerned about telling her father Miguel performed by Carlos Mencia (The Mind of Mencia) and her mother Sonia performed by Diana-Maria Riva (Chasing Papi, What Women Want) about her wedding plans, dropping out of Law School to become a teaching to immigrant youth, and moving with Marcus to Laos for a Doctors Without Borders opportunity.
As I watched the film, I was entertained, but it became clear to me that the film was written by men because each of the multiple ways the female characters were developed (or not) and how they were portrayed as weak, sad, fearful, or chasing after men. Yet the men are angry, opinionated, and in various ways display levels of power not just within their specific communities but power over the women in their lives as well. Read more…

28 Oct 2008Three stars of the TV show Ugly Betty think there is nothing uglier than discrimination and that’s why they stepped up to appear in an ad against Proposition 8 in California.
Voting no on Prop 8 is not just about gay rights,” said America Ferrera. “It’s about preserving the integrity of equal rights in this country. This is not about being gay or straight, it’s about being American. Vote no on Prop 8.”
“Family is very important to Latinos,” said Tony Plana. “Prop 8 discriminates against families and everything we stand for. I encourage all Californians to vote NO on this divisive and unfair proposition.”
“Like all Americans, Latinos have family members and friends who are gay and deserve the same rights all of us have,” said Ana Ortiz. “Prop 8 would take away those rights and that’s why we urge all Californians to vote NO.”
Prop 8 would eliminate the fundamental right for same-sex couples to marry.

26 Mar 2008The Feminist Majority Foundation released a video, attempting to dispel some myths about feminism , including that feminists don’t shave their legs and that they’re all white women. Lending her face (and race cred) to the video, is Ugly Betty star, America Ferrara.
I’ve struggled with the mainstream feminist movement because exclusionary tactics and the label of feminist.
What does a feminist look like in your world?

Ugly Betty herself, America Ferrera, has been named “Hispanic Woman of the Year” by the Hollywood Reporter and Billboard magazines:
Ferrera “is a leader for all women, but especially those in the Hispanic community,” publisher John Kilcullen said in a statement. He said the 23-year-old actress is “dedicated to advancing the position of Hispanics in television and film.”
Why it’s “woman of the year” and not “performer” or “actress” is a mystery to me. Oh well, America was apparently thrilled, saying at the Hispanic Women in Entertainment awards breakfast on Tuesday saying “It’s an honor to be in such esteemed company.” It’s amazing all that America has achieved at such a young age. At only 23 years old, she’s already won a SAG award, an Emmy and a Golden Globe.

Anything but Ugly America Ferrera
Christina Aguilera is on the top of many Best Dressed Lists for tonight but I actually hated her red carpet dress. Maybe the big bow across her midriff was meant to hide a growing belly but it ruined the dress for me (besides her huuuuuge boobs are a dead pregnancy giveaway). I liked the dress she wore for her duet with Tony Bennett though.

Tonight is Ugly Betty night on ABC and if the numbers from last week’s premiere of the show, produced by Salma Hayek, were any indication, millions will be tuning in. 16.3 million people tuned to ABC to watch America Ferrera play Betty Suarez. I know I’ll be watching.
Oh and if you wanna dress like Betty Suarez you can start by wearing her signature “B” necklace, available online at ETS Shopping for the low price of $172.

Last night ABC premeired Ugly Betty starring America Ferrera as the fea Betty Suarez. The show, partially produced by la bella Salma Hayek (who makes a guest showing as a gun toting telenovela maid), is a light, fun look at an “ugly” Latina assistant struggling to find her place in the superficial world of a fashion magazine. The show is based on the popular Colombian novela Betty la Fea. This English language version features the fashion capital of the world, New York City, as one of its main characters. Betty is a Queens College graduate and the street on which she lives with her widowed father and single-mother sister looks nearly identical to the Corona, Queens street I spent part of my childhood on (complete with the 7 train passing in the background).
