19 Aug 2008Ms. America Ferrera of “Ugly Betty” fame, won entertainer of the year award for her portrayal of Betty Suarez at the ALMA awards yesterday.

My thoughts? I love America and the work that she does in both television and movies–but that does not prevent my from really disliking her dress. Zebra stripes are just not my thang, I guess.

Tonight, desperate housewife and Tony Parker’s wifey to be, Eva Longoia, can be seen hosting the National Council of La Raza’s 2007 ALMA Awards. The awards actually took place on June 1st but tonight they air on ABC at 9 am Eastern time. The show will open with Ms. Longoria and amigo Mario Lopez doing a salsa number. The awards highlight Latino entertainment and entertainers. Slated to perform are Beyonce (singing in Spanish?) and my fave, Calle 13.

How many times does Eva Longoria change outfits? So far she has looked amazing in all of them, except that yellow dress with the bow between her breasts.
Jimmy Smits deserves his best actor in a tv series award. He has always been a strong advocate of positive Latino images in the media and has taken roles, in television and movies, that have reflected the depth and complexity of Latinos.
Ok I take the previous comment back. The last striped outfit that Eva came out in is the worse.
Ay finally some music I can shake my ass to- Vico C. Ha ha did you see the Ying-Yang Twins try and get J-lo up on stage and how bad she didn’t want to go! Good call , since they are singing about being a nasty girl. Again – this show has done nothing but continue to promote negative heterosexist stereotypes about women. Ay could Vico C have a smaller Rican flag?
Didn’t Daddy Yankee look fine? I’m not a big reggaeton fan pero he’s a papi. Jessica Alba (who is quoted as saying she doesn’t feel like a “Latin actress”) looks lovely and tiny. Pero contrast that with the subdued and makeupless Shakira accepting her award via video.
Uy looking at Andy Garcia, I realize how much that cuban reminds me of my ex, a half Cubano. I take issue with Andy’s politics pero he is an amazing actor and deserves the Anthony Quinn award. This must be the anti-Castro Cuban bloc, with Andy Garcia, Cristina Saralegui, and Gloria Estefan. Whoa – Did Gloria Estefan have plastic surgery or is it just the hairstyle that makes her look so much younger. And rounding out the bloc is Emilio Estefan.
Eva came back looking nice and telling some good jokes about being the first Latina with a white gardener. Awww mira que cute Freddy Rodriguez is. I loved him in Six Feet Under.
Ok wait hold up one second. Why do we need to hear songs about loving women hot like jalepenos? Followed by Paulina Rubio shaking her ass. So far this show is doing absolutely nothing in terms of countering stereotypes of Latina women as hot-blooded. What the hell is Paulina bringing to this show anyway.
Maybe because I’m east coast and Rican I don’t get Big & Rich and Cowboy Troy. Tell me I’m missing something big.
And we’re back after seeing not just one but two commercials with Eva Longoria, and she, I must say, is rocking in red tonight.
I must say, as I am listening and watching the Marc Anthony montage, I love that man’s voice pero I can do without seeing him. He deserves priase for his talent. Ay I love the Latina doctora from Grey’s Anatomy, Sara Ramirez. She’s a Latina with curves and super sexy.
Brian McKnight is killing Marc Anthony’s music and Marc Anthony is crying, probably because it’s so bad. So far two of the songs were written during Marc’s Dayanara years. I must also say that his wife (whose name I will not type because I promised earlier today not to) looks lovely. Notice how emotional Marc gets. Also not how tiny he looked next to Jimmy Smits.
Whoa did Marc just confess to some infidelity by saying that he wrote every song performed for his now wife? That’s tacky considering when he wrote most of those songs he was married to the second mother of his children.

Nothing stereotypical here. Just a bunch of scantily clad latinas (and one latina wannabe) shakin’ their asses. Wasn’t the idea of this award show abot positive Latino images and we’re watching people clapping for hip shaking? Uuuy and Paulina Rubio can’t sing – at least not in English anyway. That was the worse opening number I’ve ever seen.
What is up with all of Eva Longoria‘s giggling and what is Jessica Simpson doing looking like a carrot at the ALMA awards? The daughter on Gilmore Girls is Latina? She’s nominated as outstanding actress in a television series. The winner, Judy Reyes, just called out why the hell Jessica Simpson is there.

The National Council of La Raza’s (NCLR) ALMA Awards airs tonight on ABC at 9:30 pm (8:30 pm) central. This event was taped a few weeks ago so there should be no surprises. The event was hosted by Desperate Housewife Eva Longoria and featured performances by Paulina Rubio, Gloria Estefan and others. Marc Anthony was given a special Celia Cruz Award. The ALMAs were created, according to the official ALMA website :
…to honor outstanding Latino artistic achievement in television, film, and music and the enhancement of the Latino image in the entertainment industry.
Because nothing enhances the image of Latinos in entertainment like having a group of Latina (is Carmen Electra even Latina?) women dancing around on stage half naked during the opening act.
I will be posting my comments regarding the actual telecast in real time tonight. So stay tuned.

The NCLR Alma Awards, yet another Latino awards event that deemed VL not worthing of inviting, took place last night in Los Angeles. Hosted by Eva Longoria, the awards were attended by a whos-who list of Latino celebs. Check out some great photos at Spain’s El Mundo.
Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find a press release announcing the winners, and the website has not been updated to reflect the results of the awards. I guess they are wanting to keep results under wraps until the show airs on June 5th, but a bit chafa, if you ask me.
The L.A. Times’ Tom O’Neil apparently had the same problem, but he’s done some of the dirty work to put together a list of some of the people who received an Alma award last night. Here’s a taste, then visit Tom’s blog for more:
