The Paz Sin Fronteras concert, held yesterday on the Colombia-Venezuela border was a success by all accounts. As you can see, all the participants, including organizer Juanes, fellow Colombian Carlos Vives, Alejandro Sanz, Miguel Bose, and Juan Luis Guerra, all entered wearing white (save a few accessories). And all participating artists performed separately and together- showing through action, that there can be unity with differences.

Alejandro Sanz, the Spanish pop star and outspoken critic of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, is receiving the support of several Latino superstars in his quest to “tell it like it is” about the South American leader. Sanz has released a letter of protest against Chavez’s banning of his upcoming concert in Caracas, and the undersigned supporters reads like a who’s-who of music, sports, movies and TV: Penelope Cruz, Jennifer López, Ricky Martin, David Beckham, and even…Shakira. In addition to all the entertainment luminaries, the Grammy’s Board of Directors also signed the letter. I guess Alejandro’s still got some major star power!
In a letter sent to Spain’s El Pais newspaper, Sanz thanks all that have supported him and ends it by saying: “For them and for all Venezuelans who have felt alone, my signature and my gratitude to all of you.”

Spanish pop star and foe of Hugo Chavez Alejandro Sanz made off with the big prize for Latinos in the non-Latino specific Grammy event. Or “the real Grammys” as some refer to it. Sanz took home the statuette for Best Latin Pop Album
…for El tren de los momentos…Sanz overpowered Miguel Bosé (Papito), Jorge Drexler (Doce segundos de oscuridad), Luis Miguel (Navidades Luis Miguel) and Jennifer Peña (Dicen que el tiempo).
In my opinion, this was Alejandro Sanz’s worst album yet (in spite of Shakira’s helping him out), but given that competition it’s easy to see why he dominated the category.
Meanwhile, Dominicano Juan Luis Guerra took home the Grammy for Best Latin Tropical Album for La llave de mi corazón. PR’s Calle 13 walked out with an award for Best Latin Urban Album for Residente o Visitante. Best Tejano Album went to Little Joe & La Familia for Before The Next Teardrop Falls, and Best Mexican Album went to a personal fave, Pepe Aguilar, for 100% Mexicano.
If you didn’t catch the Grammys, the not-to-be-missed moments were Kanye West’s tribute to his mom and Amy Winehouse’s via satellite performance. Look for them on YouTube.

Back in October, Spanish pop star Alejandro Sanz was banned from performing in Caracas due to some “despotic” comments he made about President Hugo Chavez. It seems that the relationship between the two isn’t shaping up to get much better, as 20 Minutos reports that Sanz recently called Hugo a “dictator” at a Grammy party in Miami:
Alejandro Sanz said, during a party in Miami, that many Venezuelans are “suffering through the dictatorship” of the Venezuelan president, Hugo Chávez. Sanz made this comment at a party celebrating his candidacy to a Grammy award.
Alejandro also clarified why he accepted a Venezuelan flag and a “Chavez Sucks” t-shirt at a recent concert in Miami, and later showed them to the audience, saying: “I did what I felt. It wasn’t a joke but a criticism.”
Somehow I think this isn’t going to make getting a gig in Caracas any easier.

It’s getting harder and harder for me to be objective about Hugo Chavez with all of the stuff he’s done this year to stifle his people’s access to media and now, music. Spanish pop star Alejandro Sanz, wildly famous throughout Latin America, was set to perform at Caracas’ El Poliedro venue and the tickets had been sold out for months, but Huguito has cancelled the show. Guess why: because in 2004, Sanz had something unfavorable to say about Chavez; when asked what he thought of the president back then, he said:
“I don’t like him, the same way I don’t like leaders of other places, and I don’t think my own has done a great job either. I don’t come to start a revolution, I came to sing. But if I could write a song to this country, it would be called 3 million signatures,” he said, referring to the number required for a referendum against the Venezuelan president.
According to Spain’s 20 Minutos, Venezuela’s Minister of Education admitted on the radio that Sanz won’t be allowed to perform because of his “despotic” comments about the President.

Last week, pop star Alejandro Sanz admitted that he has a son born outside of his marriage to Mexican model, Jaydi Mitchell, causing gossip rags in Latin America and Spain to go wild. Apparently, Sanz decided to come forward with the news himself after he learned that his ex butler was about to leak the story to press for financial gain. Now, both the butler and his wife have been arrested and accused of extortion in Miami:
Miami police have arrested two people that apparently have tried to extort Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz. The suspects detained are the singer’s butler and his wife. They are accused of extortion and theft.
The presumed extortionists supposedly threatened to sell the story of the singer’s secret son, fruit of an extramarital relationship.
As for the secret child, no one knows who the mother is, though Spanish television speculates that she is a Puerto Rican makeup artist, while Sanz himself maintains that she is a woman who is completely outside of the entertainment industry and the public eye, and wishes to stay that way.

3 Oct 2006Much was made of the divorce of Spanish heartthrob Alejandro Sanz from his Mexican model wife, Jaydy Mitchel. There were rumors that Alejandro was gay (and having an affair with Spanish pop star Miguel Bosé), or that he was going back to his ex girlfriend and mother of his first child, yada yada. Now we know he’s moved on with his life and has a new girlfriend, a Puerto Rican beauty ten years his junior whom he refers to as his “personal assistant”.

All of that is fine and good, but the real chisme is that Jaydy, Alex’s ex, has moved on as well. And, not to be outdone, has scored herself another superstar. This one is her paisano, Rafael Márquez, arguably Mexico’s biggest sports star, and player for the legendary Barcelona soccer team.
