18 Mar 2009How many of you — regardless of religious beliefs — can really call this statement valid?
The Pope has really outdone himself this time. Going a step beyond John Paul the II’s assertion that abstinence is preferable to condoms — which in itself is ridiculous — Benedict has clearly gone off the deep end. Condoms worsen the problem? That’s just crazy talk. AIDS experts in South Africa agree:
Rebecca Hodes, head of policy for the Treatment Action Campaign in South Africa’s city of Capetown, told Al Jazeera on Wednesday they were “extremely angered and saddened by this ill-considered response from the pope”.
“We know, based on over the 10-year experience of preventing and treating HIV in South Africa, that condoms are one of the only evidence-based means of preventing HIV available to us in Africa,” she said.
“There is very little evidence to support abstinence-only education campaigns as a means of preventing HIV. Condoms work in preventing HIV.”

The FARC hasn’t liberated their captives, but two women of Spanish and Argentine citizenship being held hostage in Somalia were freed yesterday, according to Mexico’s El Universal. The women — Argentine nurse Pilar Bauzá Moreno and Spanish doctor Mercedes García (pictured) — were both employees of aid group Doctors without Borders and were working in Somalia when they were kidnapped on December 26th, 2007.
According to the Argentine government’s spokesperson, both women are “safe and sound” and currently on their way to Spain where they will be reunited with their families.

In liberal Barcelona, Spain, one of the country’s top designers, Antonio Miró, has decided to incorporate the topic of immigration into his appearance at a top fashion show, using undocumented immigrants from Senegal as the models:
Miró placed a makeshift raft and some freight boxes as the only stage dressing to show his designs for the next winter season which, like his show from last year did by incorporating prisoners from the Modelo prison [in Barcelona] has a “solidarity” angle.
In Spain, the word for “trendy” in popular argot is “fashion”. Could this just be a “fashion” fashion show? Like it’s trendy to adopt African babies or go help with Katrina cleanup?
