Images speak louder

The rhetoric, punditry and backbiting stirred up in the media and swirling around the immigrant rights movement is getting to be a bit much. Sometimes images are more eloquent than words, so I’m posting this one.

My Flickr friend Franciscophile snapped this one at our local SF protest. It gave me a peaceful feeling in the midst of all of this hostility.

Got a picture of the protests that you consider different from what the media is showing us? Send it to us at press@vivirlatino.com

History Channel Celebrates Cesar Chavez

4:32 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Activism| TV| history · Comments Off

28 Mar 2006

statues_chavez1.jpgThis Friday, March 31, marks the birthday of legendary farmworkers’ rights leader Cesar Chavez. To commemorate the date, The History Channel en Español will be featuring a documentary about Chavez’s life, called “La lucha en el campo” (”The Fight in the Fields”):

The Fight in the Fields: Cesar Chavez and the Farmworkers’ Struggle, produced, directed and written by Rick Tejada-Flores and Ray Telles, covers the full arc of Cesar Chavez’s life.

A social history using archival footage, newsreel, and interviews with Ethel Kennedy, former California Governor Jerry Brown, Dolores Huerta, and Chavez’s brother, sister, son and daughter, among others, the documentary traces the remarkable contributions of Chavez and others involved in this epic struggle for safer working conditions, equality, and better pay for farm workers.

The compelling two-hour documentary, which originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, garnered numerous awards including a CINE Golden Eagle, a Gold Apple from the National Educational Media Network, an ALMA award from National Council of La Raza, and was also named Best Documentary at the San Antonio CineFestival.

It’s nice to see cable networks such as HBO and The History Channel honoring Latino history for once. I’m used to having to rely on PBS for that.

The film airs on The History Channel en Español this Friday at 8:00 pm EST – 5:00 pm PST

Mobilizing for fair immigration

9:05 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Activism| Immigration · Comments Off

23 Mar 2006

06323203243_carnesstoppage323_230.jpgTens of thousands Latinos and supporters took to the streets today in Milwaukee to protest against harsher immigration legislation:

“We want to be treated with equality”, Hernández added. Some 90 businesses, run by Latin Americans in the southern sector of the city were closed during the day or for several hours in support of the protest.

The protestors are opposed to legislation, approved in December by the House of Representatives that would make being in the USA illegally a crime.

Accordingly, employers who take on illegal immigrants would be subject to new sanctions and the law would provide support for the construction of a wall along a third of the border with Mexico.

Meanwhile, Latino business owners in Atlanta are calling for a boycott which would shut the doors of their businesses tomorrow, to protest new immigration legislation in Georgia:

“They’ll see what type of effect it would have on the economy if they would take us all, like they say, ship us to Mexico or Guatemala or El Salvador,” Covarrubias said.

Community leaders say it’s a way to force Metro Atlanta to recognize the importance of Latin workers.

Business leaders have organized, and are encouraging Latin immigrants living in Metro Atlanta to spend their Friday without spending at all.

In understand the not spending, but shutting one’s own business seems a bit counter-productive to me.

Jay Hernández loves his dog, hates fur

200-jayhernandezad.jpgUp-and-coming Latino actor Jay Hernández loves his dog, his cat and all animals; and he’s joined animal rights group PETA for an ad campaign to discourage the use of fur for clothing:

Jay Hernandez would never wear his dog—or anyone else’s dog, for that matter—and he doesn’t think you should either. In fact, the Hostel star feels so strongly about fur that he and his canine compadre, Donner, took time out of their busy movie-star schedules to pose for the latest “If You Wouldn’t Wear Your Dog, Please Don’t Wear Any Fur …” ad.

Jay, who will next be seen on the big screen in Oliver Stone’s upcoming movie, World Trade Center, looks sexy and striking in our new anti-fur campaign.

Other famous Latino “fur foes” (celeb endorsers of PETA) include Fernanda Tavares, Vanessa Olivarez and pseudoLatino Joaquin Phoenix.

Today in Hong Kong, Garcia Bernal joined on a fair trade campaign run by the humanitarian aid organization Oxfam. Specifically the 27 year old actor spoke about the negative impact genetically modified corn exported from the U.S. under NAFTA was having on the agricultural economies of countries like his own native Mexico.

NYC Boricuas Remember Filiberto

7:30 am By Maegan La Mala · Events| New York City| PR| Politics · Comments Off

21 Nov 2005

filiberto2.jpg On Friday, November 18th, nearly 600 people filled the Martin Luther King, Jr. Labor Center of New York City to remember slain Puerto Rican nationalist leader Filiberto Ojeda Rios. Filiberto was killed by the FBI on September 23. The keynote speaker of the evening was another Puerto Rican nationalist leader Rafael Cancel Miranda, who received a standing ovation. Other Nationalist leaders including Edwin Cortés and Antonio Camacho Negrón were also present. A message from the widow of Don Filiberto, Elma Beatriz, who was present at the FBI raid that took her husband’s life, was read.

schwarzenegger.jpgCalifornia Latino activists are not happy with the Governator this month (neither are teachers, nurses or gays) after his October 7th veto of a bill that would allow drivers’ licenses for undocumented immigrants. Perhaps where the pang of such a denial is most deeply felt is in Los Angeles. To call L.A. a sprawling metropolis is an understatement. It is the definition of sprawl, and the painful reminder of the failure of American urban planning and the automotive industry’s death vice on this country since cars were invented.

To live in L.A., to survive, means to drive. Angelinos spend A LOT of time in their cars. You need a car to get to work, and to drive that car legally, you need a license. Immigrants are here to work, yet they are being denied that necessary piece of documentation. Activists are speaking out and saying just that:

“The people need driver’s licenses. They are workers, not terrorists, and deserve respect and dignity,” said Cedillo, who pledged to reintroduce the bill as many times as it takes to get it passed. “Broken promises” are unacceptable, he said. “On Nov. 8, we will vote no on Propositions 74, 75, 76 and 77!”

Props 74, 75, 76 and 77 refer to the various state propositions being made by the Governor which will be voted on next month. The anti-Arnold rally for immigrants’ rights is set for October 27th at 4:00 pm in Los Angeles’ Pershing Square.

filiberto2.jpg The FBI killing of Puerto Rican Nationalist leader Filiberto Ojeda Rios on September 23 in Puerto Rico has all Puerto Ricans talking, regardless of their position on the status of the commonwealth. Ojeda Rios, wanted in relation to a Connecticut Wells Fargo robbery in 1983 , was considered a terrorist by the United States and now has been made a martyr. There have been protests not only in Puerto Rico, but in New York City , Boston and Connecticut.

The story of Filiberto’s death and its aftermath has been front page news in Spanish language media outlets. But you have to search long and hard to find coverage in English. There have been several small stories in major media outlets like the New York Times, but English language coverage has been mostly about fears of the United States government and its leaders as opposed to what is really going down in Puerto Rico and in the hearts or Puerto Ricans everywhere. For those Ricans who want information in English, indy media outlets have been the way to go. For example today and tomorrow, Pacifica Radio’s WBAI in NY is featuring programming specifically related to the Ojeda Rios killing and actions and reactions surrounding it.

RosaClemente-activism.jpg Just in case people think the situation is getting better and doesn’t need to be thought aboutin the Gulf Region in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the human disaster that followed, Latina activist and reporter Rosa Clemente tells us what is up. In a report aired on Pacifica Radio’s Democracy Now!, Rosa compares the conditions in the shelters and the way people of color, including herself, are being treated, as “prison like”. You can read and listen to her report on the Democracy Now! website.
