No Free Morning After Pill in Chile

11:48 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Chile|Health|Women · Comments Off

7 Apr 2008

frontchileflag.jpgAfter a long battle within the Chilean courts, the Constitutional Court of Chile on Friday blocked a government-sponsored program that distributed emergency contraceptives to women as young as 14 free of charge. The morning after pill, as it is commonly known, will still be available at pharmacies with a doctor’s prescription. The problem is that in a country where abortion remains illegal and underground illegal abortion clinics abound, women in Chile, especially poor women in Chile who do not have regular medical care, will be pushed further underground when it comes to their sexual health.

rosanna.jpgTrying to show she’s more than just a pretty face, Rosanna Queirolo, won a seat on the Ecuadorian National Assembly on a platform promising to protect the environment and to provide a bridge to the Ecuadorian immigrant community in the United States. Once comfy in her seat of power however, she showed her true colors in positions about rape, abortion and the GLTB community.

For those non-Spanish dominant peeps, translation after the jump.

Blog for Choice DayToday is the 35th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision, which basically overturned all state and federal laws outlawing or restricting abortion and allowed abortions for any reason a woman chooses up until the fetus is potentially able to live outside the womb. ‘Viable,’ that is, potentially able to live outside the mother’s womb. As a woman of color, more specifically a Puerto Rican/Latina, the debate is a little more complicated. My choice is about choosing to have a child and how, as much as it is about choosing not to have a child.

Illegal Immigration : Blame Aborted Fetuses

1:32 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Controversia|Immigration|Politics|Women · Comments Off

24 Jul 2007

tom.jpgFormer Republican Congressman Tom DeLay knows exactly who to blames for the “illegal” invasion of immigrants, 40 million aborted fetuses. In a speech to college Republicans DeLay said:

If you believe abortion, if you believe that doesn’t affect you… I contend it affects you in immigration. If we had those 40 million children that were killed over the last 40 years, we wouldn’t need the illegal immigrants to fill the jobs that they are doing today. Think about it.

While you try and wrap your brain around the ridiculousness you can actually see Delay say this here(You have to fast forward to 3:45 unless you want to watch and listen to scary young Republicans until then).

Mexico City Abortion At Risk

11:07 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Controversia|mexico|Women · Comments Off

4 Jun 2007

abortion.jpgIt’s been just over a month since early term abortions were legalized in Mexico City and already the procedure is at risk of being repealed. Mexico’s Supreme Court said it will hear a legal challenge to the law legalizing abortion. In the meantime, the capital’s mayor promised hospitals would continue to perform abortions.

Botched abortions lead to injury and death in Brazil

5:26 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Activism|Brazil|Controversia|Women · Comments Off

21 May 2007

popebrazil_246663d.jpgAs Mexico City leads the way in the legalization of abortion in Latin America, the rest of the region remains behind. With the pressure of Pope Benedict urging the Brazilian government to keep abortion illegal on his recent visit to the country, new statistics from the Brazilian Health Ministry about deaths related to botched abortions is opening up a heated debate:

In the last five years, 1.25 million women — some 200,000 women per year — were hospitalized for complications related to illegal abortions.

According to the World Health Organization, nearly one million illegal abortions are practiced in Brazil every year. 20 Minutos reports that, in addition to the fact that 13% of deaths in pregnant women in Brazil can be attributed to illegal abortions, the financial toll of the injuries and deaths related to the procedures over the past five years amounted to 81 million dollars.

Abortion is legal in Mexico City

25 Apr 2007

72164ffa35374g.jpgA huge triumph for the left in Mexico, as was expected, Mexico City’s legislative assembly approved a bill to make abortion in the capital legal until 12 weeks of gestation. This makes Mexico the only country in Latin America except for Cuba to allow “abortion on demand”.

Following is a selection of images from around the web of the reactions to this landmark decision.

Mexico City set to approve legalization of abortion

6:42 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Controversia|mexico|Women · Comments Off

24 Apr 2007

news-aborto.jpgAfter months of heated debate and with all eyes in Mexico on the capital, it looks at this hour as if Mexico City will make the historic move to approve the legalization of abortion. Mexico City’s La Jornada reports that voting is currently 46 in favor and 20 against on the bill that would make abortion from the first to the 12th week of gestation legal in Mexico’s largest metropolis. It would also lessen the punishment for physicians who perform the procedure after the 12th week.

As about one hundred pro-life activists protested, held vigils and fasted outside the city’s Legislative Assembly offices, the Pope put out a statement saying he

“unites himself to the Church in Mexico and so many people of good will, concerned about the Federal District legislation that threatens the life of unborn children.”

Mexico City mayor won’t back down to activists

5:28 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Justice|mexico|society|Women · Comments Off

20 Apr 2007

04-1nac1.jpgLast week we told you that Mexican television star Chespirito had joined forces with an anti-abortion organization called “Dénme Chance” (“Give me a Chance”) to try to force the genie of the women’s reproductive rights movement in Mexico City back into the bottle. That same organization has in turn published the cell phone number of the Mayor of Mexico City, Marcelo Ebrard, without his permission, urging anti-abortion activists to call him.

Mexico could legalize euthanasia

11:00 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Justice|mexico|Politics · Comments Off

13 Apr 2007

ethicsindex_euthanasia.jpgLately there has been lots of movement in Mexico City on the part of leftist senators towards the legalization of abortion, sparking a heated public debate that is raging on. Now Mexico is on its way to the legalization of yet another controversial practice: euthanasia. The health commission of the Mexican senate is responsible for the proposed bill, which

…is based on humanist principals and respects the right of the individual to freedom of self-determination, taking into account that this liberty be given in a responsible and informed way, according to the PRD.

The plan looks to reform the Federal Penal Code and create a law called General Law of Suspension of Curative Treatment, also called the Law of the Right to a Dignified Death. The requirements of the law can be applied if the patient is in terminal phase, having been diagnosed with a maximum of 6 months to live, and when the patient or his or her family (in the case of a incapacitated patient) have given their consent.

Spain’s El Pais reports that the bill has been well-received by senators, but I’m sure that as the time to vote on the bill draws closer, the church will stick its nose in the matter. We’ll keep you posted on how this story progresses.
