Former Republican Congressman Tom DeLay knows exactly who to blames for the “illegal” invasion of immigrants, 40 million aborted fetuses. In a speech to college Republicans DeLay said:
If you believe abortion, if you believe that doesn’t affect you… I contend it affects you in immigration. If we had those 40 million children that were killed over the last 40 years, we wouldn’t need the illegal immigrants to fill the jobs that they are doing today. Think about it.
While you try and wrap your brain around the ridiculousness you can actually see Delay say this here(You have to fast forward to 3:45 unless you want to watch and listen to scary young Republicans until then).

It’s been just over a month since early term abortions were legalized in Mexico City and already the procedure is at risk of being repealed. Mexico’s Supreme Court said it will hear a legal challenge to the law legalizing abortion. In the meantime, the capital’s mayor promised hospitals would continue to perform abortions.

As Mexico City leads the way in the legalization of abortion in Latin America, the rest of the region remains behind. With the pressure of Pope Benedict urging the Brazilian government to keep abortion illegal on his recent visit to the country, new statistics from the Brazilian Health Ministry about deaths related to botched abortions is opening up a heated debate:
In the last five years, 1.25 million women — some 200,000 women per year — were hospitalized for complications related to illegal abortions.
According to the World Health Organization, nearly one million illegal abortions are practiced in Brazil every year. 20 Minutos reports that, in addition to the fact that 13% of deaths in pregnant women in Brazil can be attributed to illegal abortions, the financial toll of the injuries and deaths related to the procedures over the past five years amounted to 81 million dollars.

A huge triumph for the left in Mexico, as was expected, Mexico City’s legislative assembly approved a bill to make abortion in the capital legal until 12 weeks of gestation. This makes Mexico the only country in Latin America except for Cuba to allow “abortion on demand”.
Following is a selection of images from around the web of the reactions to this landmark decision.
More images after the jump.

After months of heated debate and with all eyes in Mexico on the capital, it looks at this hour as if Mexico City will make the historic move to approve the legalization of abortion. Mexico City’s La Jornada reports that voting is currently 46 in favor and 20 against on the bill that would make abortion from the first to the 12th week of gestation legal in Mexico’s largest metropolis. It would also lessen the punishment for physicians who perform the procedure after the 12th week.
As about one hundred pro-life activists protested, held vigils and fasted outside the city’s Legislative Assembly offices, the Pope put out a statement saying he
“unites himself to the Church in Mexico and so many people of good will, concerned about the Federal District legislation that threatens the life of unborn children.”

Last week we told you that Mexican television star Chespirito had joined forces with an anti-abortion organization called “Dénme Chance” (”Give me a Chance”) to try to force the genie of the women’s reproductive rights movement in Mexico City back into the bottle. That same organization has in turn published the cell phone number of the Mayor of Mexico City, Marcelo Ebrard, without his permission, urging anti-abortion activists to call him.

Lately there has been lots of movement in Mexico City on the part of leftist senators towards the legalization of abortion, sparking a heated public debate that is raging on. Now Mexico is on its way to the legalization of yet another controversial practice: euthanasia. The health commission of the Mexican senate is responsible for the proposed bill, which
…is based on humanist principals and respects the right of the individual to freedom of self-determination, taking into account that this liberty be given in a responsible and informed way, according to the PRD.
The plan looks to reform the Federal Penal Code and create a law called General Law of Suspension of Curative Treatment, also called the Law of the Right to a Dignified Death. The requirements of the law can be applied if the patient is in terminal phase, having been diagnosed with a maximum of 6 months to live, and when the patient or his or her family (in the case of a incapacitated patient) have given their consent.
Spain’s El Pais reports that the bill has been well-received by senators, but I’m sure that as the time to vote on the bill draws closer, the church will stick its nose in the matter. We’ll keep you posted on how this story progresses.

For the past couple of weeks we’ve been telling you about the ongoing debate in Mexico City between city politicians and pro-life activists around a proposed bill to make abortion legal in Mexico’s capital. The debate has become hotter and hotter, and is now past the boiling point as Chespirito — a.k.a. Roberto Gómez Bolaños, the creator and star of legendary children’s show El Chavo del Ocho — a celebrity known for uniting Latinos all over the world has taken a step toward dividing Mexicans on this controversial topic.
Bolaños has joined pro-life activists to create television spots in which he recounts how his mother was told by doctors to terminate her pregnancy after an accident. In the spot, he goes on to say: “My mother told him, “Me? Have an abortion? Never.” That is to say, she defended life…my life. And thanks to her I’m here today.”

Just when you thought the abortion debate in Mexico City couldn’t get any hotter, Mexico City mayor Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon announced to pro-life activists who are demanding he stop legalization of abortion that he would not veto the bill once it comes to his office, and described the president of one pro-life organization as “fascist”:
“What you are asking me to do is to veto a bill that hasn’t even been approved yet and I’m not going to veto it. I’ve never vetoed any bill approved by the Legislative Assembly, and I’m not vetoing this one either,” he said.
Ebrard, who once again referred to Serrano Limón [president of Pro-Vida, pictured at left] as a person with a fascist nature…explained that he will respond to the request as he would with any other citizen and said “because I AM a very tolerant person.”

Earlier this week we told you about how the PRD in Mexico City wants to see abortion legalized. As expected, backlash from the religious right in all its forms (Catholic, evangelical and others) was quick and bold, with groups of all religious stripes protesting yesterday, with some notable quotes:
The spokesperson for the Archdiosese of Mexico, Víctor Hugo Valdemar, called the legislative initiative proposed by the leftist Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD) and the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) “absurd”, “bloody”, “antidemocratic” “fascist”.…”Man is not above divine law, and when he tries to be, that is an attitude of demonic arrogance,” added Valdemar, who said that the senators “are putting their salvation in peril” and that the women who abort “will have regrets for the rest of their lives.”
According to Venezuela’s El Universal, the only groups that showed even a smidge of tolerance were the Anglican and the Greek Orthodox churches, who advocated for more sex ed to avoid unwanted pregnancy.
El Universal also reports that a poll released yesterday shows 53% of Mexicans agree with making abortion legal, and a separate poll of only women shows 72% in support of legalization. Meanwhile, President Felipe Calderon of the right-wing PAN says the law “should remain as is”.
