Revisiting the Personal and Political of the Democratic National Convention

Ay the Democratic National Convention seems like such a long time ago. Denver, it's thin air, the madness of running from one place to the other as a credentialed bloggers, being misquoted. Pero it was only four weeks and a few days ago. While much has happened since then in terms of the presidential race, what's the saying? The more things change the more they stay the same.

Check out the DNC aventura, Beer (Veneer?) and Loathing : The Pollatix of Grain and Periphery, from the lens of the talented Nezua aka The Unapologetic Mexican. It made me weep, pero that's probably because I was there and because Nezua really captured everything that was going on so perfectly.

On the ride from our Lakewood hotel into the teeming heart of downtown Denver, I'm looking out the window as we roll past homeless folks lined up outside the community service center. I see a thirty-something blonde woman wearing jeans and a white tank-top standing on the side of the road holding a cardboard sign welcoming DNC attendees and asking for spare change.

Media, the DNC, and the Latino Vote : The Criminal, Macho Latino Male and the Hot Blooded Latin Sterotype Mujer

Everyone wants the Latino vote, even if we are all gang bangers and putas, at least according to the mainstream media. Day after day, out hotness and criminality is highlighted, even in so - called political articles covering endorsements and independent media here at the DNC.

I never thought I'd have anything in common with Daddy Yankee, who recently endorsed Republican presidential candidate John McCain. And no, I'm not talking about being Puerto Rican, I'm talking about being stereotyped.
Normally, I would unleash a stream of Spanish curses at my screen and move on, pero the reality of the Democratic National Convention against the reality of Denver ties it all together.

It's all in the representation. Carlos attempted to do an incomplete post about the Latino (he puts the word in quotes) bloggers covering the convention. I say incomplete because he misses many Latino bloggers and other POC bloggers here covering not the speeches, that can be followed from a hotel room as well as from the "privileged" space of the credentialed blogger area, a room with a tv, but rather the extreme space between those spaces and the real, physical reality of Denver residents, especially residents of color.

Say what you will about Hillary Clinton, but the woman knows how to give a speech.
California Clinton Delegates Hold On Strong !

The California Clinton Delegates held a meeting after their California breakfast yesterday. Gloria Allred (Clinton Delegate and women’s rights attorney) led the pact by first saying she wanted to addresses the full delegation but was denied. She implied that the Obama campaign didn’t want that to happen. Then she requested a speech today at their delegation breakfast, but again denied. So she held a unofficial meeting with Clinton delegates. She explained “today is the 88th anniversary when women won the right to vote.” With an emphasis on won because she said “it wasn’t given to us women fought hard and long.” She went on to explain with her legal advice that the Delegates are legally bonded to vote for Hillary but most importantly they were elected to do us and they promised the voters who elected them that they would. She said
“it’s my opinion from the DNC rule that we must honor the results of each primary.”

On the outskirts of the meeting Obama delegates look over with disgusted expressions. I find that funny though, because if Obama lost with long primary season then they would want his votes counted too!

When Reality is Ignored by the Political Theorists : Mississippi Raids Ignored

Loretta Sanchez called me a "girl" when I asked her about the Mississippi ICE raids that have led to the arrest of 350 people.

From Citizen Orange:
Numerous agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement descended on a factory belonging to Howard Industries Inc., which manufactures electrical transformers, among other products.

As of late Monday afternoon, no criminal charges had been filed, said Barbara Gonzalez, an agency spokeswoman, but she said that dozens of workers had been "identified, fingerprinted, interviewed, photographed and processed for removal from the U.S."

My Man Teddy

Don’t we all love Teddy Kennedy? But I want to start off by asking another question.

Why the hell did Caroline Kennedy get a standing ovation when she came out to speak? I know she revolutionized the Democratic Party in the 60’s, wait that was her Dad.

Caroline doesn’t deserve such admiration. Back to the point, Ted has lived a live of accomplishments that can not be compared to any other politician (though Nancy Pelosi likes to think she can). He has revolutionized the power the Senate holds and he has flourished into the best politician in the Kennedy family tree. No matter what obstacle is thrown his way (George Bush) he can tackle it face on and recently that was seen with his cancer. When I watched the beautiful video tribute before his speech I began to cry. The fact that he came to Denver when it was advised of him not to because of his health really states what kind of man he is. His speech was eloquent and passionate with the right amount of force. He stole the night away…yes that include you Michelle Obama.

Honorary Latina of the Day...

No, I'm not talking about America Ferrera I’m talking about the great Senator of New York Hillary Clinton. Yesterday, she surprised DNC Hispanic Caucus goers and gave a heart felt speech filled with commitment for the issues that matter the most for Hispanics. She spoke about comprehensive immigration reform and a stronger education system. She spoke to the heart to us, she said "I knows there maybe language Barriers but it doesn't matter we are all American and we are all strong and we all deserve a system that works and Barack Obama and Joe Biden are going to bring that to all of us.”

She lastly addressed the cynical and GOP bigwig John McCain. She addressed the manipulative ad that his campaign started airing that included clips of her attacks on Obama.

Even though I agree with those critiques (because they are true) the GOP is making me sick with their same old tactic. The GOP should try to refresh their strategies to win an election besides frying your opponent to a crisp with vindictive ads. Hillary responded by saying "I'm Hillary Clinton, and I do not approve that message." I think that explains why Americans should love Hillary.

But our student correspondent, Estevan, was there so he'll be blogging his thoughts later.

I did arrive in time to see Howard Dean, who focused on the need to register Latinos and get them to vote. He also spoke of how the Republicans scapegoat Latinos and how McCain flip-flopped on his own immigration reform plan.
