Barack Obama in Espanish

Barack Obama released an ad with him looking straight at you, Spanish speaking Latinos, and he's speaking in your language, Spanish. Apparently this as is supposed to appeal to our emotional side, and while his pronunciation isn't too bad, the ad has as much emotion as a rock.

Two Spanish Language Newspapers Endorse Obama

With two weeks before elections day, the focus on key voting blocs intensifies, and Latino voters represent part of that. Much of the attention to the Latino vote and Latino issues (because we don't want the same things that other voters want like a better economy, health care, apparently)is happening in Spanish and through the Spanish language media (because apparently we all speak Spanish).

Los Angeles’ La Opinión and New York’s El Diario/La Prensa, two of the nation’s oldest Spanish-language dailies, made public their endorsements of the Democratic candidate on Friday.

Obama Ad Attacks McCain for Turning His Back on Immigration Reform

While in English language debates, Obama will not mention the word immigration, his campaign has no problem dropping the word in Spanish language ads (apparently English speaking Latinos don't care or aren't interested in immigration?).

NYC Mayor Bloomberg Habla Español (Sort of)

NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg is taking Spanish classes, with a Colombian tutor. Does this mean he speaks with a Colombian accent?

The men sat at opposite ends of a coffee table speckled with a half-dozen books — on the history of New York’s municipal lawyers, on the subway system’s rich architecture. Their legs stretched out, left foot resting on the right, they were mirror images of disparate worlds: the tutor, an immigrant from Colombia, with his student, the mayor of New York, face to face for 90 minutes in an elegant chamber at City Hall.
In an interview in Vanity Fair magazine, el alcalde says he wishes his Español was better
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
My Spanish. I’ve been studying for seven years and I still speak como un novato.

In New York City, it should be a requirement to speak Spanish and I mean that in the best way.

Anti-Immigrant Forces Don't Espeak English So Well

Ay, the anti-immigrant forces. When they aren't pissing us off with telling us to go back where we came from, they are always good for a laugh.

Any nativist will tell you that polls show 1,000% of 'Mericans support speaking only English in the United States of America. It doesn't matter if the U.S. can't even understand the languages of the countries it goes to war with (you don't need to understand people to shoot at them). If people can't speak English like they're supposed to, they're not real 'Mericans.

Using this iron-clad logic, I thought I'd compile a list of five English lessons for those that want to learn to how to be a real 'Merican and speak English."

Bolivia : Indigenous Communities and Helping Bloggers

Al-Jazeera has a really interesting video story about the struggles of the Indigenous communities against land/power owning mestizos and those of European descent.

I do have to question the choice of the opening sequence of the statue ripping out the heart of a European. Seems like the story is trying to link the current struggle as a continuation of a long history.

I work in the toy department of a major retailer in a pretty diverse part of Pennsylvania. I see a lot of Latino families and I am curious about something.
I have 3 kids myself and I would love to know how John Kletter can help me when they act up.

Ok...so being that fact that I am completely new at this, I honestly did not know what the hell Misty was talking about. I googled "John Kletter" and did not find much...and was about to move on to our next submission...that is until I mentioned the question to one of my friends (she made me swear not to reveal her name) who has a thick accent and she said "que eso de jon kleta?"and then it hit me me like a ton of bricks...we had a phonetic translation issue here....John Kletter doesn't exist...at least not in the Latino universe what Misty actually witnessed was the power of the almighty "CHANCLETA".

Why is the Same Job Done In Spanish Worth Less?

Is the same news, reported in a different language, Spanish for example, worth less? According to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle it is.
Reporters at San Francisco’s leading Spanish-language TV news station, KDTV/Univision, make roughly one quarter less in base pay than their English-language counterparts. This despite the fact that the Spanish newscast attract more viewers in the 25-54 demographic than every other newscast in the Bay Area save the top-rated KGO-TV.

How to explain the disparity?

Yes, This is President Bush of the United States

I asked my 10 year old daughter: "What language do they speak in Italy?"

She answers: "Italian".

Now if only the U.S. lame duck President Bush knew that.

At the G8 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia two years ago, President Bush was caught in a candid moment on an open microphone, complaining that some of his fellow world leaders “talk too long.” Though the G8 summit was in Japan this year, the open microphones during lunch were still there. As the New York Times’s Sheryl Gay Stolberg reports, Bush had a bit of a language mishap when speaking to “one of his best buddies in Europe,” Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi:

“Amigo! Amigo!” Mr. Bush called out cheerily in Spanish when he spotted the Italian prime minister. “How you doing, Silvio? Good to see you!” Later, the president wondered about his former Russian counterpart, Vladimir V. Putin. “Did Putin come to see you since I saw you?” he asked Mr. Berlusconi. (He had not.)

Shout out to Matt Ortega for this.

English Only Please at Graduations

Imagine your parents are immigrants to the United States (not a stretch for many of us). Through their sacrifices (and some of your own, no doubt), you graduate high school at the top of your class. At graduation during your valedictorian speech, you give a shout out, in your family's native language. Now the school district wants to make a policy so that all future speeches are English-only. This is what happened to two students in Louisiana.
Here's what one school board member told the Associated Press: '''I don't like them addressing in a foreign language. They should be in English.'''

According to the article, it sounds like Cindy, 18, said a sentence or so in Vietnamese--and then translated it for the wider audience. I know that if I were sitting in the audience, and say, it was my son, I would be damn proud--probably crying--to hear him say something in Vietnamese or Chinese.

Here's Cindy's point of view, according to the AP:

'Ms. Vo said her statement in Vietnamese was aimed at her parents, who do not speak fluent English. “Out of the whole speech, it’s one sentence dedicated to them to give thanks,” she said. “Mine was personal and general for the entire Vietnamese community and something I wanted to share with graduates.”'

She made it very clear--her parents do not speak fluent English, and this was in a way, a tribute to her parents.
