I Am Latino...Ask Me: Americanos ask about the power of the Chancleta...

Dear Urban Jibaro,

I work in the toy department of a major retailer in a pretty diverse part of Pennsylvania. I see a lot of Latino families and I am curious about something. Whenever a kid throw a tantrum in my department, I hear their mothers threaten them with "John Kletter" and they immediately start behaving in most cases.

I have 3 kids myself and I would love to know how John Kletter can help me when they act up.

My question is "Who is John Kletter, and why are Latino children so afraid of him?

"Gracias" (thats all the Spanish I know)

Misty (Lancaster PA)

***************************************************

Ok...so being that fact that I am completely new at this, I honestly did not know what the hell Misty was talking about. I googled "John Kletter" and did not find much...and was about to move on to our next submission...that is until I mentioned the question to one of my friends (she made me swear not to reveal her name) who has a thick accent and she said "que eso de jon kleta?"and then it hit me me like a ton of bricks...we had a phonetic translation issue here....John Kletter doesn't exist...at least not in the Latino universe what Misty actually witnessed was the power of the almighty "CHANCLETA".

This whole ASK A LATINO thing is gonna be fun...

So now that we got that squared away...Click below to read my official response to the first "ASK A LATINO" question.

From the Nightmare Files : Lou Dobbs for Gov of New Jersey?

Everyone's favorite anti-immigrant spokesperson, CNN's Lou Dobbs, has suggested that he may be interested in running for governor of the state of New Jersey. In response to this scary possibility, America’s Voice has created a website for the maybe candidate based on his racist views. From a press release on the launching of the site:
The site features our take on what a Lou Dobbs campaign platform would look like, inspired by the unrealistic and polarizing views of real Congressional candidates. Visitors are invited to submit their ideas (in English Only) for the Dobbs campaign slogan contest. The winner will receive a free t-shirt featuring their slogan, and activists around the country will have the opportunity to purchase the shirt online.

Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice had this to say:

“America’s Voice is glad to take this opportunity to reveal the truth about anti-immigrant, mass-deportation candidates who have stood in the way of real immigration solutions for years.

Lou Dobbs is not a real candidate, he’s a caricature of what is wrong with the current immigration debate. He offers no real solutions to our broken immigration system, and simply uses his program to spread proven lies, stir up racial tensions and fear, and provide a platform to known hate groups.

The site is funny as all hell. Check it out.

Rapid Response ICE Raid Network Hotline for NY/NJ Launched

If Immigration and Naturalization (ICE) show up at your door, do you know what to do? Do you know what your rights are? Most people don't, especially in the current climate of fear, which is why NJ the May 1 Coalition and the New Jersey Civil Rights Defense Committee have launched a 24-hour free number (1-800-308-0878) covering New York and New Jersey that will provide immediate, contact with Spanish-speaking volunteers in the event of a raid.
"Most of the ICE raids on homes and workplace are fishing expeditions—ICE does not know who has documents and who does not," explains Eric Lerner, a member of the NJ May 1 Coalition. "Immigrants are detained and deported mainly as a result of information that they are frightened into providing the agents. If immigrants call the hotline as soon as they hear that knock on the door, the volunteers will explain to them their rights so that they don't inadvertently give out information that leads to detention." Experience with Rapid Response Networks in other cities has shown that even immigrants who are aware of their rights can panic when confronted with armed ICE agents and forget those rights. The hotline provides a reassuring, knowledgeable individual who can remind the caller of their rights and encourage them to use them.

Bogota Anti-Immigrant Mayor Hires Undocumented Workers

How do you spell hypocrisy? Bogota (New Jersey, not Colombia) Mayor Steve Lonegan. He's come down hard on undocumented workers in his city but he had no problem using undocumented labor to build yard signs. Of course, he's trying to spin the issue, saying the incident is minor and that it just goes to show how hard it is to verify the status of workers.

The workers, who were interviewed on Univision yesterday, said that Lonegan knew they were undocumented workers.

It's not clear if Lonegan paid the workers a legal wage.

Weekend Mira! : Dueling Immigration Rallies in NJ

In what many local media are describing as a "high-noon standoff", at least three rallies about immigration are slated to take place tomorrow in Morristown, New Jersey. The events were spurred by the actions of Mayor Donald Cresitello, who sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) division, hoping to get 10 local police officers deputized as immigration agents, under the federal 287-G program. The officers would be given access to a database to inquire about the individuals' immigration status and start deportation proceedings on illegal immigrants. One rally is being led by an organization named ProAmerica Society and will feature the mayor, 9/11 Families for Secure America, the Ku Klux Klan, and Stormfront (a white nationalist organization).

No Doughnuts for Jersey Radio Racists

Late last month Jen wrote about a racist radio show in New Jersey that called for listeners to report and round up undocumented immigrants. New Jersey Assemblyman Wilfredo Caraballo wanted to put his money where his mouth was in terms of protesting the radio show and trying to bring it down. The way to do this? By targeting advertisers with threats of boycotts. Just as many advertisers pulled their dollars from Don Imus's show following his statements regarding the women's basketball team at Rutgers University, advertisers are doing the same with “Jersey Guys” of Millennium Radio. Major names have pulled their ads, including AT&T, CVS Pharmacy, Verizon, Hyundai, Volvo, Fox TV Station, Sleepy's, PNC Bank, Nissan Parts and Services, and most recently Dunkin Donuts.

NJ radio station calls for "illegal" roundup

Some radio DJs (always the source of such high-brow entertainment) in New Jersey have put the call out to their listeners to report "suspected illegal immigrants" to the radio station, 101.5 FM, or to authorities:
The leaders say the radio station's campaign - named "La Cuca Gotcha" - is clearly anti-Hispanic and may encourage racial profiling and other bias incidents against Hispanics.

"It's a despicable campaign and clearly slanted at Hispanics," said New Jersey Assemblyman Wilfredo Caraballo. "The campaign describes us as bugs that have to be stamped out."

Freehold : Where "Those " People Have a Certain Flavor

It's the words of Freehold Councilman Marc LeVine.
In the web site of PEOPLE (Pressing Elected Officials to Preserve Our Living Environment), Councilman Mark LeVine wrote that there, "a very promiscuous flavor'' in parts of the Hispanic community, the Asbury Park Press reported.
LeVine went on to say that some of "these people'' often expect the state to subsidize their mistakes when they have large families that they can't afford to support.
