I Am Latino...Ask Me: Americanos ask about the power of the Chancleta...

Dear Urban Jibaro,

I work in the toy department of a major retailer in a pretty diverse part of Pennsylvania. I see a lot of Latino families and I am curious about something. Whenever a kid throw a tantrum in my department, I hear their mothers threaten them with "John Kletter" and they immediately start behaving in most cases.

I have 3 kids myself and I would love to know how John Kletter can help me when they act up.

My question is "Who is John Kletter, and why are Latino children so afraid of him?

"Gracias" (thats all the Spanish I know)

Misty (Lancaster PA)

***************************************************

Ok...so being that fact that I am completely new at this, I honestly did not know what the hell Misty was talking about. I googled "John Kletter" and did not find much...and was about to move on to our next submission...that is until I mentioned the question to one of my friends (she made me swear not to reveal her name) who has a thick accent and she said "que eso de jon kleta?"and then it hit me me like a ton of bricks...we had a phonetic translation issue here....John Kletter doesn't exist...at least not in the Latino universe what Misty actually witnessed was the power of the almighty "CHANCLETA".

This whole ASK A LATINO thing is gonna be fun...

So now that we got that squared away...Click below to read my official response to the first "ASK A LATINO" question.

Pitbull arrested for DUI

No, this isn't something you'd see on Animal Planet, rapper Pitbull (a.k.a. name Armando Perez) has been arrested for driving under the influence. We hate to follow one DUI story with another, but we guess it's just that time of year. Reports TMZ:
According to the police report obtained by TMZ, Perez was stopped after flying past a marked cop car in his silver Mercedes, doing 93 mph in a 55 zone. At first, the rapper wouldn't get out of the car, and when he did, the officer writes that he "could detect a strong breath odor of alcohol over the gum he was chewing," that Pitbull's speech was rapid and slurred and his eyes were bloodshot.

Results of the sobriety test weren't pretty either: he couldn't do the finger-to-nose touch, he was swaying, and basically mangled the "walk and turn" portion of the test, losing his balance, stepping off line and starting without being told to do so.
TMZ also claims that Pitbull allegedly yelled repeatedly to officers "This is a big waist [sic] of time your time papo."

The rapper was then booked and his bail was set at a modest $1000.

Check out TMZ for the arrest report, video (including Pitbull laughing off the incident) and more developments on this story.

Monday Morning Univision Republican Debate Hangover

Ever wake up a morning after and say to yourself, " Why the hell did I do that last night?". That's what I'm saying to myself this morning after having wasted an hour and a half of my precious life on the Univision Republican debate. Why a waste? Well besides the fact that nothing surprising was said (ok I was a bit surprised at the blatant homophobia). I went into the debate waiting for the obvious racist moment when it hit me. Duh, they know we're (Latinos) are listening. So in between telling undocumented people to go home they threw in God, compassion, and love. What Latino is going to say no to God, compassion, and love. Hearing all the anti-Chavez, Castro rhetoric, reminded me, that even though the Republicans (minus one) knew we were listening, they also tailored their answers for the Cuban exile community not for me or my kind of Latino. And it seems that much of the Spanish language media didn't pay the debate any mind, at least not in NYC, where the newspaper front pages are more about our day to day reality, like some kids in Washington Heights who were brutalized by police.

I was also surprised by the constant reference to El Salvador and President Reagan's intervention there, as if that was the foreign policy model to follow. Were they suggesting that the U.S. should fund opposition parties in Latin America. That the U.S. should support death squads? Oh wait. I think they do that already.

Most Latinos were like my partner, who went into the other room to watch the Mexican soccer final, while I listened to nothing new being said by Republicans, no matter how it was translated.

How would you deal with Chavez? Ron Paul was booed when he said that he would talk with Chavez. He said we created the Chavez's and Castro's of the world by butting into their affairs. Mitt Romney said that Chavez is no friend of the U.S. but that Chavez isn't the people of Venezuela and vice-versa. Giuliani agreed with Mitt Romney. Giuliani said that Chavez is acting like a dictator and should be treated as one.

Thompson said that the responsibility of fixing education needs to be on the local level. McCain said that choice and competition are the key. Poor teachers should be fired and poor schools should be closed. Sounds like he wants to privatize education. Romney said we have a good model already. Teaching children English is a key to success as is testing based on standards. Better teachers should be payed better (merit pay).

Huckabee, how to stop high Latino dropout rate? Huckabee said many kids fail because they are bored. That we need not just math and English but also music and art. Giuliani reminded everyone that he's a result of Catholic schools (and Jesus is still kicking himself over it I'm sure). Giuliani is using his example to promote school choice.

Live Blogging Univision Republican Debate

All candidates said that there was no risk in coming to the Univision debate.
Finally, the English only question. McCain said that English should be the official language and that all who come here should learn English and he will help them. Ron Paul said that bashing bilingualism is wrong but the official language should be English.

Next question: What should happen to over 12 million undocumented people in the U.S. Giuliani said that the illegal immigration needs to stop first. He says we need a virtual and a real wall, a national id. Once we do that then people can get their ids, pay their taxes and if they can't do that then they should get kicked out. Huckabee agreed with Giuliani on the border issue. Undocumented people need to go back to where they came from and begin the legal process, that is go to the back of the line.

I wonder how many English dominant people (Latino or not) are tuning in on CC3? I know that many gringos who watched the Univision Democratic debate and blogged it, kind of missed the main points. Mitt Romney, Giulianni, Ron Paul, and McCain have a huge fan club in the audience. Who is Duncan Hunter? I really know little about that guy.

First question: Why has there been a drop in Latino support of Republicans? There was a huge delay in getting the translation. Giulianni didn't answer the question. Romney said Latinos have a string connection to Latinos since so many of us are in the military, so many of us are business people, and so many of us are people are faith. Huckabee said that Republicans obviously haven't communicated well with Latinos. He focused on the disparities in education and health between Latinos and non-Latinos. McCain basically said that Latinos were anti-abortion, religious, and pro-military. Not this Latina. McCain also said that just because of Republican immigration stance many Latinos have written off Republicans.

What will likely be an insult will be the pandering the candidates will no doubt engage in. I can't wait to hear how they handle the immigration issue as well es education, and health care.

The debate begins at 7 pm (est) and can be seen on your local Univision channel (no where else because that's how Univision rolls).

Daniel Rene : Por Ti, Para Ti and with VivirLatino

He's been singing for years, first with MDO, an incarnation of the Menudo franchise and now he's released his second solo album Adicto. He writes songs, so well apparently that one song he helped write was nominated for a Grammy. And his beautiful face (he reminds me of a hot Cuban ex I once had) and acting skills are on the Telemundo novela Pecados Ajenos. Daniel Rene was gracious enough to take some time out of his busy promo schedule to talk to la Mala about what he's an adicto of, why he sings in Spanish, and strip clubs. Yes, strip clubs. Check out after the jump for notes from my interview and a video of Daniel Rene for the song off his album, Por Ti, Para Ti.

Democratic Presidential Wannabes (minus 1) Throw Latinos a few Bones

Tonight's historic Spanish language presidential candidate forum sponsored by Univision, shown on Univision, and conducted by Univision news people, presented some dead on target questions but did it help Latino voters decide who they should choose? As an educated Latina voter, the forum helped solidify some of the nuanced differences between those running but it sure didn't make me want to run to the polls.

Primero, I have to call Univision out on their almost dictatorial control they need to have on events they sponsor. Why weren't other Latino journalists from outside the Univision school invited to question candidates? Why weren't Latino bloggers and other new media invited to participate the way bloggers participated in the Democratic All American Forum and will participate in the Republican All American Forum? I think Univision missed the ball here in reaching young Latino voters.

Republicans diss Latino officials

While Democratic hopefuls for the 2008 presidential campaign will participate in a candidate forum hosted by the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) in Orlando, Florida tomorrow, the GOP candidates -- with the exception of one -- decided to skip the event all together. ABC News reports:
Friday's Republican forum? Canceled. Only Rep. Duncan Hunter of California agreed to show. The other candidates cited scheduling conflicts, including a Saturday debate in Iowa, which Hunter also planned to attend.

"The Republican candidates have blown off Hispanics in Florida," said state Rep. Juan Zapata, a Republican who helped bring the NALEO event to the state.
They didn't just blow off Latinos in Florida. This shows a disregard for Latino voters in general. And what's interesting is that if there were ever a place where Republicans might find an easy Latino audience, Florida would be it. Perhaps for that reason they think their time is better spent courting Latinos in non-stronghold states?

It will be interesting to hear what happens at NALEO tomorrow with the Democrats, and we'll keep you posted.
