I’ve been wanting to see the Broadway musical, In The Heights since it opened, but now with 13, count ‘em 13 TONY Award nominations, I want to see it even more.
“In the Heights,” a rap, hip-hop and salsa flavored musical about Latino families in Washington Heights, led the Tony nominations, which were announced on Tuesday morning, with 13 nods, including two for Lin-Manuel Miranda, the show’s 28-year-old creator and star.
The winners will be announced at the 62nd annual Tony awards ceremony on June 15 at Radio City Music Hall with Whoopi Goldberg hosting.

Next week Paul Simon’s Broadway musical, The Capeman, will get a chance to win audiences again, something it failed to do during it’s first run nearly 10 years ago. Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is proud to produce Songs from The Capeman (April 1 through April 6, 2008), a special concert staging of Paul Simon’s 1998 Broadway show, The Capeman. The show’s lauded music, in performances at the BAM Harvey Theater (651 Fulton St), will feature Paul Simon, Oscar Hernández and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Claudette Sierra, Obie Bermudez, Ray De La Paz, Little Anthony and the Imperials and other guests.

Being a dead musician (especially a Latino musician) means a posthumous musical. La guarachera Celia Cruz is no different. An off-Broadway show creatively titled “Celia” is set to open September 12 in NYC at the New World Stages. The premise is that Pedro Knight, Celia’s widower, is remembering his beloved from his hospital bed. The musical , with about 30 musical numbers, according to the director, is trying to show the woman Celia Cruz not just the legend. It is being said that Pedro had a hand in the creation of the show before his own death.

Spanish actor Antonio Banderas hasn’t been caught cheating on long time wife Melanie Griffith. Banderas will return to the Broadway stage as Don Juan in a new musical production slated to start next year. The music for the production is being done by none other than Oscar winner Gustavo Santaolalla, and a script by Pulitzer Prize winner Nilo Cruz.
I am not a huge musical theatre fan but I’ve heard that Banderas is quite good on stage and playing a historical Latin lover no less? Plus with an award winning musical director and an award winning script writer, how bad can it be?

I cried when Selena was taken from this world, pero I also think that the cult of the Tejana artista who was murdered in 1995 can go a little too far. The latest incarnation of Selena products is a musical which is set to tour through Mexico and the Southwest U.S. later this year and into next year. The musical was produced in Mexico by Federico González Compeán. Compeán said of the musical with 30 dancers and actors:
Se trata de una historia muy sencilla y simple, popular, que no se plantea contar nada diferente porque sobre Selena Quintanilla (1971-1995) todo está dicho. Lo que sí queríamos era no hacer del asesinato el momento más trascendente, si bien es imposible obviar su relevancia.
My concern is where is all the money that is going to be generated from this musical going to go?

I spent 70 minutes last night in el Palacio de la Moneda in Santiago de Chile sharing Salvador Allende‘s final moments on September 11, 1973. Colombian actor Ramiro Sandoval plays the first democratically elected Socialist president of the Americas in the stage production, Allende:The Death of a President now showing at the Theater for the New City in the Lower East Side of New York City. They say that before you die, your entire life flashes before your eyes. Argentino-Americano journalist and current editor of the New York Daily News Spanish language weekly, la Hora Hispana, has wriiten a monologue that imagines what Allende was thinking in the hours leading up to his death including reflections on his life as a political leader, husband, and father.

Mexican estrella Lorena Herrera may be wearing a fat suit for her role in the theatrical production Mi Amiga la Gorda, playing February 10th, 11th, and 12th in Mexico City, pero that hasn’t made her any nicer towards fat people. Today she modeled her fat suit on Telemundo’s Cotorreando and she also modeled her grace and charm when she chastised fat people asking them via camera:
What are you going to tell God when you die and have to explain what you did with the beautiful body he gave you as a baby?
Herrera also said that she would never date a fat person. Nice to see fat hate is alive and well in Mexico as it is in the U.S.
