According to an article in the Washington Post, there has been a policy in place for some time that authorizes Homeland security to:

take a traveler’s laptop computer or other electronic device to an off-site location for an unspecified period of time without any suspicion of wrongdoing, as part of border search policies the Department of Homeland Security recently disclosed.

Also, officials may share copies of the laptop’s contents with other agencies and private entities for language translation, data decryption or other reasons, according to the policies, dated July 16…

Multiple Latin Grammy award nominees Circo will be showcasing their musical and gaming talents by playing Xbox LIVE® members in Rock Band(TM) on Thursday, July 31, 2008. If you’re an Xbox LIVE Gold member, and you want a chance to play with Circo, send a friend request to the following Gamertags ( *Circo GWF1, *Circo GWF2) and be online half an hour before (3:30 P.M. ET) the Game with Fame session starts on Thursday, July 31, 4:00 P.M. ET.

Circo’s third album, Cursi, is in stores now and it’s a successful mix of the innovative music the band has become known for. As lead singer José Luis Abreu states, “There are stories here, but the record is pretty danceable and radio-friendly. All our songs are an invitation to dance and to celebrate feelings.”

I don’t have an XBox or Rock Band but this sounds like fun!

Date: July 31st

Time: 4 – 6pm (EST)

Game: Rock Band

Gamertags: Circo GWF1 & Circo GWF2 **please note space between Circo and GWF

451112225_80dd28d575_m.jpgTwo Spanish children, aged 12 and 13, have been sent to a mental hospital because of their addiction to cell phones. BBC Mundo reports that the two boys were sent to the institution because they were “unable to do normal activities without their cell phones.” According to the parents, the children’s grades were affected by the excessive cell phone use and their conduct was also severely impacted.

The children will be receiving treatment in the Children’s Mental Health Clinic in Lleida (Catalunya) for three months in an attempt to get them off the cell phone habit.

The BBC reports that the boys had been showing signs of addiction to their cells for 18 months prior, but the parents had not intervened.

Maybe I’m old school, but do we really need a treatment program for this? How about just taking the cell phones away?

By the way, it’s not just kids who are addicted to cell phones in Spain. In a country of 44 million people, there are 50 million cell phones — more phones than people.

Photo%2011.jpgAs a blogger, I’m always connected. There’s wifi, checking my email on my phone, texting, twittering, reading the blogs of others, and on and on and on. But does that make me sick?

Alcohol, drugs, food, sex, and even shopping are all candidates for medical treatment and are recognized as genuine mental disorders, so what about the Internet? Internet addiction -defined as “excessive gaming, sexual pre-occupations, and email/text messaging” – is becoming so common that at least one psychiatrist says it merits inclusion in psychiatry’s official handbook of mental illness, the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.”

Ok well I’m not a big gamer and I don’t have sexual pre-occupations (trust me) so maybe I’m safe.

Amazon Indigenous Communities Get Technical

11:22 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Latin America|Tech · Comments Off

6 Nov 2007

surinamindigenous.jpgSome indigenous tribes in the Amazon region have already embraced the internet. Now, Amazon communities are using GPS GPS devices to map out what belongs to them and to make sure their land stays in their hands.

To avoid getting steamrollered by developers, ranchers, loggers, miners, oilmen, and biopirates, tribes across the Amazon Basin have begun acquiring high tech tools to defend themselves. Much of the help in this effort has come from the Amazon Conservation Team, a Virginia environmental and cultural preservation organization, which provided equipment, cartographic expertise, and financial assistance. Now dozens of men like Wuta are walking the forests, mapping their lands with the aid of portable GPS devices.

g43753dwe8t.jpgAnybody out there got a Microsoft Zune (a what?)? That’s Bill Gates’ answer to an iPod, and the Zune is out to conquer Latino music lovers and challenge the manzanita‘s iTunes Latino, released at about this time last year. Microsoft is leaning on some Latino celebs to promote the Zune and hopefully lure listeners away from the ubiquitous iPod:

Wisin & Yandel, the reggaeton duo with an uncanny knack for delivering hit singles, will become the first act to get its own customized Zune player, Billboard has learned.

The limited-edition Wisin & Yandel Zune device will hit Wal-Mart stores nationwide October 29, before the release of the duo’s new album, “Los Extraterrestres,” November 6.
