While many people on the Northeast coast are digging themselves out of a blizzard this morning, media reports and an FBI investigation indicate that some Latinos in East Haven, Connecticut are digging themselves right on out of the town.

Earlier this month the FBI launched an investigation against the East Haven Police Department because of complaints of racial profiling and criminal activity against Latinos including physical assault.

But Justice Department Civil Rights investigation or not, AP reported yesterday that Latinos are closing up shops that they have invested time and money in because the harassment has gotten so out of control.

Hispanic business owners say police made a practice of parking outside their shops and stopping any Latinos. Some who complained say they faced retaliation.

Luis Rodriguez, an immigrant from Ecuador who owns the Los Amigos Grocery, said he was arrested two months ago and jailed for five days after a woman pointed out to police that his 3-year-old son was unsupervised on the sidewalk outside the store. He said police were out for revenge because his wife had been videotaping them. He was charged with child neglect; the case is still pending.

Meanwhile, his store is up for sale. Ecuadoreans used to travel from as far as Massachusetts for jalapenos, Ecuadorean sodas and other specialty products. But Rodriguez said police have scared customers away by threatening to alert immigration authorities if they ever saw them in town again.

Taxi! Do Drivers of Color Get Less Tips?

1:52 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Connecticut|Money|race · 1 Comment

taxi.jpgI rarely use yellow taxi cabs. I can’t find any in my hood and when I’m in the city, they don’t want to drive me to my hood. A study of 1,000 taxicab rides in one city, New Haven, Conn., found that black cab drivers were tipped less than white cab drivers and that black and Latino passengers tip less than white passengers (I am looking at you, oh partner of mine who doesn’t tip anyone well). Even black passengers tipped black drivers less. Other studies have shown the same trend in other tip dominated industries, like waiting tables.

But the trend maybe more than just racial, it’s historic according to some.

The practice of tipping emerged in the early 20th century to provide a “consideration” from then primarily white customers to those serving them in menial jobs, who tended to be Black workers. “For some, the practice of tipping was intimately connected to the perceived inferiority of African Americans,”

Arrested Machetero Fighting Extradition and Tortured

1:29 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Connecticut|Puerto Rico · Comments Off

12 Feb 2008

35351435.jpgAvelino González Claudio, arrested last week in connection with a 1983 robbery of a Connecticut armored car depot, is fighting an extradition order that would send him to Connecticut to face trial. Gonzales Claudio considers himself a political prisoner and says he would not have a fair trial on the mainland.

A spokeswoman for the Federal prison said that some of the prison cells were being repaired and that is why the windows were covered not because Gonzalez Claudio is being treated differently from any other prisoner.

His lawyers also claim that Gonzalez Claudio is receiving inhumane treatment in the Puerto Rican Federal prison where he is being held because the only window in his cell has been covered with a metal plate, allowing no sunlight in and preventing Gonzalez Claudio from telling if it is day or night out.

800px-US_Immigration_and_Customs_Enforcement_SWAT.jpgWell it’s winter, of course there is ice in Connecticut but that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who have just been given the green light to train Danbury police.

A Common Council committee of the whole voted 19-2 Monday to recommend Police Chief Al Baker be given the authorization to enter into an agreement that would have some officers receive training from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

I.D. cards are a reality in New Haven

11:37 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Connecticut|Controversia|Immigration · Comments Off

27 Jul 2007

newhavencard.jpgAs some cities try to write discrimination into their local laws (and then find that these laws are illegal), one East Coast community is making immigrants’ lives easier. Last month Maegan told us about the plan approved in New Haven Connecticut to provide I.D. cards to undocumented immigrants, which would make getting access to local services a lot easier. Earlier this week, the cards became a reality, but not without controversy. Reuters reports:

Opponents hope to rally the public against it. Southern Connecticut Citizens for Immigration Reform says the ID cards will change “the entire country as we know it” and is organizing a protest on Tuesday at city hall.

“There are millions of illegal aliens right around us that when these ID cards are available to them, they will rush to them and get some identification that will allow them to go to other cities,” said Ted Pechinski, who leads the group.

New Haven, Connecticut Immigrant Friendly

11:57 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Connecticut|Controversia|Immigration · Comments Off

6 Jun 2007

newhavencard.jpgOfficials of New Haven have just made their city a little more user friendly for immigrants regardless of status. They approved a plan to offer immigrants identification cards that would let them access services that many take for granted like opening bank accounts. The plan is the first of its kind in the United States and goes against the grain of what many cities are doing to make it harder for undocumented immigrants to access basic services or even rent apartments. New Haven has about 15,000 undocumented immigrants.
