Spanish blogger Polonio 210 credits President Bush’s shoe ducking skills to the latest Wii game : “Wii Zapatilla”.
Now if only there was a game where we could throw shoes at Bush. My kids would love it and so would I.

It’s 11 a.m. in Barcelona, and 2 a.m. in San Francisco, my home city. And after waking up to the news of the Obama win, celebrating it with people here, feeling overjoyed at the fact that 8 years of Republican reign is finally over and the impact that will have on the world, and that a person of color is in the White House…I got a sinking feeling. I climbed down off my cloud and back to reality to have a look at the voting returns on California’s Proposition 8.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Prop 8, it is a state ballot measure which would amend the California constitution to limit marriage to unions between a man and a woman, effectively making gay marriage illegal. You might remember that a few months back the California Supreme Court ruled that denying same-sex couples the right to marry was unconstitutional. Marriages followed, among them that of TV star Ellen DeGeneres and her partner actress Portia De Rossi.
With 80% of precincts reporting, it looks like my fellow Californians have spoken, and their words are not what I expected. Prop 8 is winning by 4 percent, and the trend is likely to remain the same once all the votes are counted.

As I sit in front of a TV in a major European city with a ton of problems of its own, the only thing that seems to be on anyone’s mind here in Barcelona — or in Spain — is what will happen today in the United States. Every network has sent not just their Washington or New York correspondents to cover the lead-up to the elections and their subsequent unfolding, but also their most prized journalists, who are Washington, Chicago and other locales. The familiar faces of the star anchors on the evening news are missing from the newsdesk, and they speak to us from a backdrop of American flags or images of the Capitol. Clearly this isn’t just any election.
9 hours ahead of those in my home state of California, my stomach is already churning with nervousness as my friends sleep. Today is the day. On the street, newspaper headlines — and talks in smoky cafés — predict a victory for Obama. In this fiercely liberal and progressive city, where I’ve encountered my fair share of skepticism (ahem, that’s a euphemism) towards Americans, I am finding that most people are convinced that we won’t make the same mistake again. It almost feels like if the U.S. elects Obama, Europeans will almost be capable of forgiving us for the last two failures of the American electorate. On the flip side, should McCain emerge as the new leader of the world’s most powerful country, there will be more than a lack of forgiveness — a resounding “you got what you deserved.”

3 Sep 2008Flipping channels the other day I saw, for the first time in I don’t know how long, a performer who mesmerized me. Concha Buika, a Spaniard by birth and Guinean by blood, is an artist that represents the face of the new Europe.
Born in Mallorca and raised among the Roma, she delivers Spanish styles such as flamenco mixed with soul and jazz influences, reflecting what can only be described an exquisite mingling of cultures. Check her out:
Buika — a musical mentee of Chavela Vargas – is starting to gain notoriety outside of her native Spain and recently performed at Mexico’s legendary Cervantino Festival. Concha says she considers herself a “niece” of Mexico and in an recent interview had some really lovely observations about Mexican culture and music.
Check out more of her videos on YouTube here.

Not too many of us will have had the energy to stay up all night to watch the game, but I’m here to tell you that the U.S. men’s Olympic team was unstoppable in the final match-up with current world champion, Spain. I was only able to catch the last quarter, and it was a super tight game. Spain and the U.S. were both at the top of their game (Spain was down an average of only 6 points) and it was disputable whether or not The Dream Team would actually win this one up until about 2 minutes before the final buzzer. In the end, the stars of the NBA triumphed over the Spaniards 118-107.
Spanish media is calling Spain’s loss a win, referring to the game as “the most dignified defeat” and “a golden silver medal”, given the fact that they were so very close to winning against the world’s most storied basketball team.
Argentina is also celebrating its triumph as bronze medal winners in basketball, stepping up to the podium in third place. An excellent representation for Latin America in one of the Olympics’ most watched sports.
It happened at Terminal 6 at Madrid’s Barajas airport just about 2 hours ago. U.S. media is reporting 45 dead, but the numbers appear to be much higher. Spanish media reports differ, but at least 2 sources say that 140 of the 167 passengers and crew on board are dead, and 27 are in critical condition.
The Spanair flight, JKK 5022, was on its way to Las Palmas, Canary Islands when — according to first reports — it lost power in one of its engines just seconds after takeoff. This is the first accident at Madrid’s airport in over 25 years.

18 Aug 2008Spanish Rafa Nadal is officially the number one tennis player in the world, having swiped away the title from Swiss Roger Federer at Wimbledon a few weeks back. And he further proved his dominance this weekend as he picked up the gold at the Olympics for men’s tennis. Here he is yuckin’ up with the press with the Queen of Spain looking sporty at his side:
Rafa beat Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez, but the defeat left Chile in not such a bad spot: taking home the silver medal for men’s singles. Watching Gonzalez get his medal – the first one for Chile in these Olympics — is quite moving.
Congrats to Rafa and Fernando!

Seriously, Spanish Olympic sports teams, cut it the f out! Now the Spanish Olympic Women’s Tennis team poses making “slant eyes” for a camera. Well actually it’s not a new pic, but one that is a few months old.
The latest photo to emerge shows Spanish women tennis players pulling the pose, apparently in anticipation of their Federation Cup match against China in April…
It was apparently taken after the team defeated Italy in the quarter-finals of the competition – the premier team contest for women tennis players – in February. Wine glasses are visible on the table in front of the party…
The photo is still visible on the official website of the Spanish Tennis Federation, where it was spotted.
The original is captioned “Estamos preparados para China”, which translates as “We are prepared for China”.

No, no according to the Spanish Basketball team, they aren’t making an offensive, stereotype promoting gesture in that team photo. Your eyes and sensibilities are wrong. They are not making “slant eyes” they are “winking” and felt it was an appropriate gesture and felt that it was “somewhat loving”.
Someone needs to smack the Spanish basketball team with a serrano ham.
