14 Years Without Selena

4:23 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities| Entertainment| Music| Tejano Culture · 6 Comments

31 Mar 2009

14 years ago, Tejano music and Mexican American culture lost one of its most beloved artists. Selena was gunned down at the age of 23 outside of a hotel in her hometown of Corpus Christi, Texas 14 years ago today, on March 31st, 1995. Her funeral brought fans from all over the country to Corpus (myself among them) to bid a final farewell to the amazing artist and humanitarian.

14 years later, Selena’s legacy lives on. Her music is unparalleled in the Tejano genre, a genre she proudly represented as much as she proudly represented her Texas-Mexican (a.k.a. Tejano) heritage. There have been many imitators since, but there will never be another Selena.

If you’ve never heard Selena’s music or heard her perform, you’ll get a taste of her at her best in the above clip from her last concert.

Natasha Richardson is one of my favorite actresses. She is clean and understated–she can convey meaning with just the way her eyelids open and close. And she’s married to one of my few male crushes, Liam Neeson.

But even if she was a horrible actress, this news would still be pretty upsetting:

The actress, 45, suffered a devastating head injury Monday in a freak skiing accident outside of Montreal. Neeson immediately left the Toronto set of his latest film, Chloe, to be with his wife.

According to representatives of Sacre-Coeur Hospital in Montreal, the couple of 15 years departed together by ambulance at 12:30 Tuesday. Richardson was spotted on the yellow stretcher by a reporter from the Toronto Star, which published the account. The couple were then taken to Elliott Trudeau Airport for a private jet flight to New York, arriving Tuesday evening. They have a home in Manhattan and another outside the city.

According to sources, friends and family members gathered for a vigil in New York to be with Richardson. It was not immediately known whether she was being taken to a hospital or to her home.

Some websites (which won’t be linked) are already reporting her death and/or speculating that she has irreversible brain damage–which is the last thing she and her family need right now. I’m all for a little celebrity gossip, but when it comes to serious things like death, life and death choices, and kids–gossip sites need to STFU or offer some prayers and good thoughts.

Please keep Natasha and her family in your thoughts.

Joaquin Makes Letterman Squirm

12 Feb 2009

Sigh. There are so few actors out there that I really like–I am not a fan of pretty boys, muscle men, or traditional leading men in general. Which leaves the Hollywood men that I really like at about *two*. Earlier this month I found out that one of my sensitive True Actor leading men is a total dick, and then today I woke up to find that my other sensitive True Actor leading man is…well…a bit unibomberish.

I guess that I embrace the queer in us all. Even the needs a shave and a hair cut queer.

Your Celebrity Updates

5 Feb 2009

Christian Bale, Michale Phelps and Britney Spears all get covered in this cute little update. Oh, and if you, like me, didn’t know what was going on with the Christian Bale update–listen to this.

This past Sunday Penelope Cruz picked up a Goya award (see above video), her country’s version of the Oscars for her performance in Woody Allen’s Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona. While most people are pleased to just be nominated, la Pe told Liz Smith she wants more than that:

I congratulate Penélope again on her nomination. I ask, because it’s the tiresome but necessary question, if it really matters to her if she wins. “Hmmm … what can I say? It’s not a lie that it is an honor to be nominated, and if I don’t win, I won’t be any less honored, but … look, ask anyone who is nominated. No matter what you think you feel about awards, when you’re there, sitting in that seat, with those people, all dressed up — of course you want to win!”

At least she’s honest! I personally don’t think she’ll win (though I thought her performance was fabulous)…too much stiff competition in that category.

P.S. What is up with the intro to that video?

Super Bowl Ads

4:04 pm By Maegan La Mala · Entertainment · 2 Comments

So, rather than watch the Super Bowl, I ate food and slept. In spite of my attempts to avoid, however, I still wound up being forced to deal with the prerequisite oohs and aaaahs over the commercials. I’m not a big fan of commercials period–but Super Bowl ads are often especially problematic to me because they are well aware that they are appealing to the most base instinct of the macho drunk male getting it on with his macho drunk male friends (I read somewhere that more partner abuse happens during Super Bowl than any other time of the year).

That said–I’m not completely incapable of finding humor in commercials. The following was one of the more amusing (and less problematic) ones. Although I have yet to understand why a shot to the groin is still considered so dang funny.

Which commercials did you like?

gdt_400.jpgMexican super director Guillermo Del Toro, auteur of such hits as Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth, might be a proud member of Los Tres Amigos crew of south of the border filmmakers, but his sentiments about returning to his native land are mixed. Del Toro, who lives between New Zealand and Los Angeles, says he’s basically an involuntary exile, as he fears for his safety in Mexico. Reports The New York Daily News:

“Hellboy” director Guillermo del Toro says he is unlikely to make another film in Mexico because his father’s kidnapping 10 years ago left him fearing for his safety, a newspaper has reported.

Del Toro’s father was eventually released, but the family says it later received death threats.

Del Toro, who is best known for directing the “HellBoy” movies and “Pan’s Labyrinth,” said he doesn’t feel safe directing films here because his daily routine becomes public.

“Not all of the people who participated in the kidnapping were captured,” El Universal newspaper on Thursday quoted him as saying.

He described his situation as a “forced exile” and said it saddens him to think he may never film again on Mexican streets.

Will Smith Gets Spanish

4:05 pm By Maegan La Mala · Bizarro| Celebrities| Entertainment| Movies| Spain| World · Comments Off

13 Jan 2009

Actor Will Smith was in Spain and stopped by a ridiculous show called El Hormiguero to promote his new movie, which I have no idea what it’s called in English, but is apparently titled “7 Almas” in Spanish. In the video above you’ll see Smith follow the conversation of the host via simultaneous translation, answer a couple questions in Spanish, cry about the Obama victory, and sing a flamenco song en español. Too much weird content for me here folks! I have to admit I pretty much despise him in his natural state, but since he’s so good-natured in Spanish he seems almost…ALMOST palatable.
