I guess the bishop of Minas, Uruguay, Francisco Domingo Barbosa Da Silveira, 65, thought it would safe to report extortion attempts against him to police without anyone knowing what the alleged extorters were threatening to reveal: that he was having sex with other male members of the clergy as well as two prisoners he had hired to help out around his office. How silly of him.
Pope Benedict XVI dismissed the bishop of Minas (Uruguay), Francisco Domingo Barbosa Da Silveira, who denounced an extortion that left uncovered he was having homosexual relations, informed today the Vatican. In a brief bulletin the press office of the Vatican informed that the pontiff has received the resignation in accordance to the paragraph 401.2 of the Code of Canon law, the fundamental law that applies to the catholic Church.
This regulation says: “The diocesan bishop is asked earnestly to present the resignation to his office if for illness or another serious cause there was remaining diminished his aptitude to redeem it”.
“The Holy Father accepted the resignation to the pastoral government of the diocese of Minas presented by monsignor Francisco Domingo Barbosa Da Silveira, in conformity of the article 401,2 of the CDC”, indicated the Vatican in the bulletin.
The two prisoners videotaped the encounter with a cell phone and were threatening to use the material to “out” the bishop.
Thinking about it a bit more, I guess with all of the child molesters in the clergy that get off with nary a slap on the wrist, Barbosa was probably right to think he could do the same.

23 Jun 2009…in English. From Think Progress, this is hilarious.

These fools were at a “conferenece” (!) arguing for English Only, spelling the word “conference” como el culo and using Sonia Sotomayor as the central figure for their ignorant rhetoric:
PAT BUCHANAN: Judge Sotomayor is up there at school in New York, she gets a scholarship to Princeton, she’s graduated with all these big honors and awards they said she never won. What’s she doing there in the summer? They said her adviser told her to read children’s classics so she can learn English better. How do you graduate number one in Princeton if you’re in the summer and you’re reading Rumpelstiltskin and Snow White? [laughter] [...]
Yeah…”so she can learn English better”… What tense are we speaking in? Nice grammar on you, too, Pat!
That’s a segue into a delusional rant about how Obama is out to make everyone speak Spanish:
PETER BRIMELOW: I really do recommend the language issue because you know that polls better than immigration and affirmative action. Eighty-five percent of Americans say they would favor official language policy. The wonderful thing about this issue if you look at what’s going to actually happen here is you’re going to find that the Obama administration is going to gradually institute institutional bilingualism in the country. It’s going to be required to speak Spanish in key positions, the police force and so on. This is a direct attack on the American working class because they are not going to be bilingual.
Right. Because Obama himself speaks Spanish so well.
WHAT. THE. F***?!
This is what we call in Spanish patadas de ahogado. The Republicans are giving up the ghost.

When you think of progressive policies around the treatment of undocumented immigrants, you might think of cities like San Francisco. You wouldn’t necessarily think of America’s heartland, but that’s just where an important issue is being raised and rallied for. A plan included in the Wisconsin state budget this month which would allow for undocumented immigrants to be able to obtain drivers licenses (actually referred to as “drivers license certificates”) is currently being debated in the state legislature.
A coalition of dairy farmers, police and Latino advocates are making a final push to convince lawmakers to create a new driver’s card for illegal immigrants. The advocates held a press conference Monday at the Capitol to push for the cards they saw lowers insurance rates and will improve the safety of Wisconsin roads.
They also say in difficult economic times, it would bring in over a million dollars to the state budget and help farmers get workers to the farms.
The Assembly passed the measure as part of a budget bill, but the Senate has rejected it.
The two sides will try to reconcile the bill this week.
Proponents say that the bill would make roads safer, as those without licenses are driving anyway, and a driving certificate will help ensure they adhere to traffic laws. On the other side, opponents counter that this will send a message to undocumented people that “it’s OK to break the law”.
Currently, only one state allows undocumented immigrants to obtain licenses: Utah.

22 Jun 2009Quick. Choose. The house is burning and you have to choose. Your mother or your child? Who do you save?
The current framing of the immigration reform movement and the immigrants it claims to represents takes place against a backdrop of human lives. And in our house, the United States of America, is aflame. The framing of the current immigration reform movement however, the good vs. bad immigrant narrative that we have written about and discussed extensively, forces advocates and the media into a corner. Choose. The idea is that we can’t have it all when it comes to immigration reform. That we need to make compromises, find workable solutions to borrow an often heard phrase from the Reform Immigration for America Summit. That means choosing between your mother or your child.

The RIAA is at it again, trying to “teach people a lesson” about illegal file sharing — what they call “piracy” — through our judicial system. I guess they think the lesson is best taught by going after innocuous users of file-sharing sites like Kazaa, like Minnesota mother of 4 Jammie Thomas-Rasset, who has been saddled with a 1.92 million dollar fine for sharing 24 songs. That’s $80,000 per song.
Thomas-Rasset sat glumly with her chin in hand as she heard the jury’s finding of willful infringement, which increased the potential penalty. She raised her eyebrows in surprise when the jury’s penalty of $80,000 per song was read.Outside the courtroom, she called the $1.92 million figure “kind of ridiculous” but expressed resignation over the decision.
“There’s no way they’re ever going to get that,” said Thomas-Rasset, a 32-year-old mother of four from the central Minnesota city of Brainerd. “I’m a mom, limited means, so I’m not going to worry about it now.”
Her attorney, Kiwi Camara, said he was surprised by the size of the judgment. He said it suggested that jurors didn’t believe Thomas-Rasset’s denials of illegal file-sharing, and that they were angry with her.
AP reports that the jury could have fined Thomas-Rasset up to $150,000 per song. So she got off easy then?
I find it interesing that a jury was so harsh with her. Did they not understand what the “crime” was? She had her music collection open for sharing with others, she didn’t kill any of the artists who recorded the music.
What kind of country do we live in when someone gets fined nearly 2 million dollars for that and others get away, literally, with murder?

18 Jun 2009MSNBC has an interesting piece on how increased immigration to formerly non-Latino areas of the country is affecting the educational landscape of public schools, and the contrast with areas of the country where English Only has succeeded in being instated and has subsequently failed students.
Have a look at the video and let us know what you think about this continuing debate. What’s best? Bilingual education? Immersion?

17 Jun 2009Come on, Barack. You can do so much better than this:
It’s for federal workers only. So it applies to about 0.00001% of the LGBT population in the U.S. And it’s a memorandum. What does that even mean? And since it applies to federal employees, does that mean that federal privileges such as allowing a person to petition a visa for a foreign partner would be honored? I would guess not.
While HRC commended the move before it was even officially announced, I say that this is crumbs; a token move to quiet the millions of LGBT Obama supporters who feel let down betrayed by what hasn’t been happening with this administration. It’s time for Obama to get his gall up and tackle the two issues we all know he’s afraid of: gay marriage and immigration.

Wow, I basically saw this one coming yesterday, word for pathetic word:
Former Miss California USA Carrie Prejean says she lost her crown because of a comment she made about gay marriage and not because she had been skipping appearances.Prejean told Matt Lauer on NBC’S “Today” show Friday that she “absolutely” had been dethroned because of the comment, when she said marriage should be between a man and a woman.
Nice try, Carrie. But in another captivating display of my psychic prediction powers, pageant officials are saying exactly what I predicted yesterday: you couldn’t keep your commitments because you were too busy making anti-gay marriage appearances for the Evangelicals. And having hangovers.
So, bye-bye, La Jolla, Viva Miss Malibu!

We called it the story that wouldn’t die, and apparently it still hasn’t. Miss California, Carrie Prejean – that bastion of morality and American values — has been stripped of her crown, after originally keeping it after a photo scandal. This time it’s not because of her liberal ways with her blouses but for something a lot less sexy – for slacking off. CNN reports:
Carrie Prejean has been dethroned as Miss California USA for “contract violations,” including missing scheduled pageant events, according to a state pageant official.Prejean, 22, retained her title last month despite a controversy over topless photos, missed appearances and her statements against same-sex marriage.
Miss USA pageant owner Donald Trump decided to fire Prejean a month after he gave her a second chance.
“Carrie is a beautiful young woman, and I wish her well as she pursues her other interests,” Trump said.
Tami Farrell, Miss Malibu, will assume Prejean’s title and assume the responsibilities she apparently wasn’t able to be bothered with. Pageant officials say she violated her contract because she was unwilling to make appearance on behalf of the pageant.
My guess is that Prejean slacked off because she was out there trying to pursue her career as a spokesperson for the Christian Right’s anti-gay marriage movement. ¡Le salió el tiro por la culata!
