Ai dios mio.
So–you remember John Edwards, right? The dude running for president (and that I even considered voting for). And you remember that he was having an affair with an unnamed woman? And then eventually there were rumors of a child–that Edwards eventually confirmed?
Well, the Other Woman is talking. And talking fast. She’s got an opinion on everything, apparently, even on how the Real Mrs. Edwards is an emasculating bitch.
“And I believe what happened in his marriage is, he could not go to his wife and say, ‘We have an issue.’ Because he would be pummeled. So he had a huge fear. Most of his mistakes or errors in judgment were because of his fear of the wrath of Elizabeth. He’s allowed himself to be pushed into a lot of things that he wouldn’t normally do because of Elizabeth’s story line. And the spin that she wants to put out there. He was emasculated. And you know, the wrath of Elizabeth is a mighty wrath.”
Well–when all is said and done I believe two things. 1. If what John needed all this time was a submissive woman who made him feel like a man–than I feel therapy might’ve been a better option, and possibly the reading of a few feminist texts. There are better and easier and healthier ways to build a self-esteem than on the denigration of a woman’s self esteem. And 2. Even if Ms. Edwards is bitch extraordinaire–she has certainly handled herself publicly in a way that exhibits grace, calm and strength. And the Other Woman is acting little better than a high school Mean Girl.
Ms. Edwards wins this round from me–as she has won all previous rounds. And may John Edwards learn to better choose his submissive male ego enhancing women. In particular, he should focus on the ones who don’t talk.

Roman Polanski is a child rapist, right? He gave drugs and alcohol to a 13-year-old girl, and then molested and raped her vaginally and anally (trigger warning, transcript of court hearings at link).
And yet, even as he raped a little girl, Polanski can’t seem to get enough support from stars everywhere–including a whole slew of the top rung of Hollywood Latin@s. A petition of support of Polanski has been making the rounds the past few days:
On September 16th, 2009, Mr. Charles Rivkin, the US Ambassador to France, received French artists and intellectuals at the embassy. He presented to them the new Minister Counselor for Public Affairs at the embassy, Ms Judith Baroody. In perfect French she lauded the Franco-American friendship and recommended the development of cultural relations between our two countries.
If only in the name of this friendship between our two countries, we demand the immediate release of Roman Polanski.
And everyday, more Latin@s are signing on, including:
Pedro Almodovar (Spanish),
Penelope Cruz (Spanish),
Guillermo del Toro,
Gael Garcia Bernal,
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu
Richard Pena (who is the director of the NY film festival, which VL has promoted)
Harold Alvarado Tenorio
Now, technically, the point *could* be made that the petition is calling for international film festivals to be “neutral” sites that exist outside of legal jurisdictions:
Filmmakers in France, in Europe, in the United States and around the world are dismayed by this decision. It seems inadmissible to them that an international cultural event, paying homage to one of the greatest contemporary filmmakers, is used by the police to apprehend him.
By their extraterritorial nature, film festivals the world over have always permitted works to be shown and for filmmakers to present them freely and safely, even when certain States opposed this.
The arrest of Roman Polanski in a neutral country, where he assumed he could travel without hindrance, undermines this tradition: it opens the way for actions of which no-one can know the effects.
But there are two things that keep me from buying that:
This section:
His arrest follows an American arrest warrant dating from 1978 against the filmmaker, in a case of morals.
and this:
Filmmakers, actors, producers and technicians – everyone involved in international filmmaking – want him to know that he has their support and friendship.
Is drugging and raping a 13-year-old child really a case of morals? Does it show the best morals in the world to support and give friendship to a man who drugs and rapes a child? To advocate for that man’s freedom? Is a rapist’s freedom really more important than recognizing the crime of rape? Is friendship with a rapist really more important than standing in solidarity with women and girls (and men and boys) worldwide that are raped, have been raped and/or will be raped?
Do these “stars” have no responsibility at all to the young girls that watch their films?
On a different note, the girl that Polanski raped was also a worker–she was raped by him while on a shoot. Her career was finished the moment she told what happened–why is it more wrong to be arrested for a crime you admitted to committing while at a work party, than it is to be raped by your boss while at work? Why does Polanski have more right to a career than that girl did? Why do the careers of women seem predicated on their ability to keep their mouths shut about the violence and power male colleagues and bosses exert over them?
Do no workers owe their solidarity to a fellow worker who was assaulted and then blacklisted?
What is most disappointing about the list of Latin@ stars is that Gael Garcia Bernal is on it. Coming from a background of radical activism, and having appeared in several movies with leftist politics, I expected more of him.
But when has a belief in radical politics ever made men more inclined to stand against gender based violence?
Violence against women and girls, and sexual violence against children is endemic throughout the world. It is not progressive, radical or liberatory to stand in support of a rapist–it is the norm. It is saying it is ok for child rape to be a normal part of the world.
Latina women and children deserve more, and expect more.
The survivor of Roman Polanski’s assault deserves more.
These “stars” should be ashamed of themselves.

We called it the story that wouldn’t die, and apparently it still hasn’t. Miss California, Carrie Prejean – that bastion of morality and American values — has been stripped of her crown, after originally keeping it after a photo scandal. This time it’s not because of her liberal ways with her blouses but for something a lot less sexy – for slacking off. CNN reports:
Carrie Prejean has been dethroned as Miss California USA for “contract violations,” including missing scheduled pageant events, according to a state pageant official.Prejean, 22, retained her title last month despite a controversy over topless photos, missed appearances and her statements against same-sex marriage.
Miss USA pageant owner Donald Trump decided to fire Prejean a month after he gave her a second chance.
“Carrie is a beautiful young woman, and I wish her well as she pursues her other interests,” Trump said.
Tami Farrell, Miss Malibu, will assume Prejean’s title and assume the responsibilities she apparently wasn’t able to be bothered with. Pageant officials say she violated her contract because she was unwilling to make appearance on behalf of the pageant.
My guess is that Prejean slacked off because she was out there trying to pursue her career as a spokesperson for the Christian Right’s anti-gay marriage movement. ¡Le salió el tiro por la culata!

9 Jun 2009After a scary, even criminal relationship with ex Sergio Andrade which landed her in prison, Mexican 80s icon Gloria Trevi has apparently found love again in partner Armando Gómez. Venezuela’s (semi-defunct) RCTV reports:
Sources close to Gloria said that the singer is anxious for the event [saying] “if all goes right the wedding will be in December. I’m very excited because I’m getting married for love. Armando and I have overcome many obstacles.Gloria, who is already working on her wedding dress, says she’ll be negotiating an exclusive [of the wedding] with a Mexican magazine.
Felicidades Gloria! Just make sure you stay as crazy as you have always been.

Yesterday La Macha told us about the apparent hypocrisy of Miss California Carrie Prejean – defender of American moral values — upon the revelation that she had posed nude. Now the firestorm against the beauty queen and 1st runner up for Miss America is getting stronger, as The HuffPost reports that yet another nude photo has leaked to press and that Carrie may have to give up her crown as a result of the scandal:
A second topless photo of Miss California Carrie Prejean has been released by TheDirty.com, days after Prejean promised the state pageant that there was only one such photo in existence. [...]Back to the crown drama. On Wednesday Prejean’s runner-up Miss Malibu told “Access Hollywood’s” Billy Bush she is ready to step in should Prejean lose her crown because of a morality clause in the pageant contract contestants sign that promises they have no nude or semi-nude photos in their past.
In an even more surprising twist, TMZ (consider the source, take it with a grain of salt) says Prejean’s bias against gay marriage might stem from the fact that her father is gay.

7 May 2009It’s not often that we hear about Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s personal life or family, but this latest bit of chisme about Huguito’s daughter is quite interesting. It seems that María Gabriela Chávez is dating the grandson of slain Chilean president Salvador Allende, Pablo Sepúlveda Allende. Chavez introduced the couple this week on his weekly TV show, Aló Presidente. Spain’s El País reports:
“Pablo!”, exclaimed the Venezuelan leader, embracing [him] told said that [he] was “a Chilean doctor, María’s partner and the grandson of Salvador Allende”, who he regularly says he admires and calls “the martyr president.”
The Venezuelan press had recently reported that the journalist, second daughter from Chavez’s first marriage, had managed to convince Sepúlveda Allende that he leave the medical center where he worked in the Chilean city of Coquimbo, opened by his grandfather who was also a doctor, to reside in Venezuela.
Might this be the making of a Latin American left political superfamily?

20 Apr 2009VivirLatino told you a while back about the hypocrite of the week, Paraguayan president, Fernando Lugo, fathering a child while he was a bishop.
Well, turns out that Lugo has probably been “hypocriting” his…er…seed all over Paraguay:
Paraguayan president Fernando Lugo has received a second demand to recognise the paternity of a child.
President Lugo, who is a former bishop, shocked the country last week when he acknowledged a two-year-old boy as his son.
The Pope released him from his vows of chastity only last July, two years after he renounced the priesthood.
The 27-year-old woman making the latest demand says her six-year-old is the son of Mr Lugo.
In a press conference, the woman said her relationship with the then Bishop Lugo had begun in 2001, when she had gone to him for help with trying to contact the father of her first child.
Why does it seem that sexually promiscuity (even in the face of vows to God) are a prerequisite for elected service?

13 Apr 2009Why is that those who preach chastity and abstinance and purity are the ones who are least likely to practice it – even when their profession supposedly requires it? Take the case of none other than Fernando Lugo, President of Paraguay, who
…has publicly recognized the paternity of a child of nearly 2 years, after last Wednesday he was presented with a paternity suit. The child was conceived when Lugo was still a bishop, though he left the order in December 2006 to pursue the presidency, which he won last year.“It is true that there was a relationship with Viviana Carrillo (mother of the child)”, said Lugo, recognizing the paternity of the child in a message to citizens in which he assured them that he “assumes all responsibilities that could come from that fact.”
26 year-old Carrillo “categorically denies” having filed the suit, even though she allegedly signed the document. Paraguay’s La Nación newspaper reports today that Carrillo’s family has left the town where they leave because of death threats.
The video above shows his confession at around 4:30. Why is this dude still wearing a priest outfit when he’s no longer a priest? What a hypocrite.

26 Mar 2009The headline says it all, and it really can’t get much better than this, folks. AP reports on the “little” incident:
Merengue star Elvis Crespo is being investigated after a woman said she saw him masturbating on an airplane en route from Houston to Miami.
According to a Miami-Dade County police report, the Grammy winner was doing it in view of other passengers on a flight last week. That prompted the plane’s captain to radio Miami International Airport.
Officers interviewed the Puerto Rican singer upon his arrival but did not arrest him. No charges have been filed, but an investigation continues.
When asked by police about the incident, Crespo said: “I don’t recall doing that.”
His publicist did not immediately return a message left Wednesday by The Associated Press.
You can’t blame Elvis. Pobrecito can’t get press to save his life, so he had no other choice than to resort to touching himself on a plane. And getting interrogated by the FBI? Priceless.
