964429Um, what? Sure, he was famous for about a minute, but what’s the motivation behind making little Edgar into a bronze statue? Apparently attracting tourists to his hometown of Perote, Veracruz (Mexico). Reports 20 Minutos:

The statue of patient zero of the new flu in Mexico has a frog in his right hand as a symbol of biblical plagues. It was made by Mexican sculptor Bernardo Luis Artasanchez, who traveled to La Gloria in the town of Perote, Veracruz, to spend time with the youngster and his family.

The effigy, some 4 feet high and weighing 154 pounds, was created at the petition of the Veracruz authorities to symbolize the victory over AH1N1 virus and to attract tourists.

I guess I can understand the “victory over the virus” argument, but to attract tourists? I mean, do you think families will take an alternate route on their way to Veracruz from Mexico City and hit Perote to see the flu boy statue? I’m not seeing it.

Perote
is beautiful by the way, I can vouch for it.

Meet Ida, Your Oldest Ancestor

1:55 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|science|society · 1 Comment

20 May 2009

626_fossil…and media darling! This fossil, formerly referred to as Darwinius masillae, emerged yesterday in a media storm as what is believed by her discoverers to be human’s oldest known ancestor, and proof of our evolution from apes. Take that creationists!

But really, with all the fuss about Ida today and yesterday, one would think she had a new film premiering or a hit show on Broadway. Flash bulbs went wild as she was unveiled yesterday at New York’s Museum of Natural History, with the celeb mayor Michael Bloomberg in attendance.

Dozens of reporters swarmed to the museum for Tuesday’s announcement at the museum, where even New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg was on hand to extol the discovery. The fossilized creature lay on its side, suspended in a block of amber-colored material sitting in a brightly lit specimen case.

Before Tuesday’s event, the fossil was shrouded in secrecy, and its unveiling unfolded more like a Hollywood production than a scientific discovery. When asked if the publicity was overdone, Hurum said he didn’t think so.

“That’s part of getting science out to the public to get attention,” he said. “I don’t think that’s so wrong.”

Ida apparently lived some 20 times earlier — 47 million years ago, when the Himalayas were just forming – than the last known fossil of this type, making her super old…and super cool! Ida makes Lucy look like chopped liver. So 1974!

Well, folks, it turns out that gay marriage opponent and Miss America loser Miss California, Carrie Prejean, isn’t getting her just desserts. The Miss America pageant’s owner and worst hairstyle-haver in the world, Donald Trump, did what was not done for Vanessa Williams: he let her keep her role as Miss America, saying the images weren’t racy enough to warrant her dethroning.

Nice hypocrisy there, Donald. Shanna Moakler, reality TV star, former Miss USA and the head of the pageant isn’t happy with that decision and has stepped down as a result of it:

“I cannot with a clear conscience move forward supporting and promoting the Miss Universe Organization when I no longer believe in it, or the contracts I signed committing myself as a youth,” Moakler said.

“I want to be a role model for young women with high hopes of pageantry, but now feel it more important to be a role model for my children. I am sorry and hope I have not let any young supporters down but wish them the best of luck in fulfilling their dreams,” she said.

CNN reports that Carrie Prejean claims that the last of the photos, published just before the decision, were

made without her knowledge during a modeling photo shoot. She said wind must have accidentally blown her unbuttoned top open.

Carrie must think all Americans are as dumb as she is if she believes we’ll buy that.

Anyway…can this story die yet? Apparently not:

Carrie Prejean uses Obama to defend her stance

Sarah Palin comes to Prejean’s aid

Keith Olbermann asks Carrie: WTF?

Miss Rhode Island
also posed topless, FOX News cries “double standard”.

Oh, and check out the argument on MSNBC in the video above. Real passion around this topic!

I must say upfront that don’t find Wanda Sykes particularly funny. I think she’s a ground breaking comedienne, and I would never take away from her the work that she’s done breaking ground for black/lesbian women to declare themselves and be judged based on their skills rather than who they are. But I don’t find her that funny.

Having said that–I found very little in her skit at the White House Correspondents Dinner to be outraged at.
There was some very funny parts, there was mostly stuff that wasn’t that funny–but material that would cause outrage? Meh.

I personally would’ve been more offended at Stephen Colbert, who I think is a much more skillful comedian, and who, frankly, completely demasculated the entire Republican party and the president. But whatever. That’s just me.

What do you think? Do you think jokes about kidney failure and “pulling out” are worth the outrage? Do you think they’re too crass for the people of D.C. who have made and defended “jokes” about Barak the Magic Negro?

carrie-copy-1Yesterday La Macha told us about the apparent hypocrisy of Miss California Carrie Prejean – defender of American moral values — upon the revelation that she had posed nude. Now the firestorm against the beauty queen and 1st runner up for Miss America is getting stronger, as The HuffPost reports that yet another nude photo has leaked to press and that Carrie may have to give up her crown as a result of the scandal:

A second topless photo of Miss California Carrie Prejean has been released by TheDirty.com, days after Prejean promised the state pageant that there was only one such photo in existence. [...]

Back to the crown drama. On Wednesday Prejean’s runner-up Miss Malibu told “Access Hollywood’s” Billy Bush she is ready to step in should Prejean lose her crown because of a morality clause in the pageant contract contestants sign that promises they have no nude or semi-nude photos in their past.

In an even more surprising twist, TMZ (consider the source, take it with a grain of salt) says Prejean’s bias against gay marriage might stem from the fact that her father is gay.

It’s not often that we hear about Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’s personal life or family, but this latest bit of chisme about Huguito’s daughter is quite interesting. It seems that María Gabriela Chávez is dating the grandson of slain Chilean president Salvador Allende, Pablo Sepúlveda Allende. Chavez introduced the couple this week on his weekly TV show, Aló Presidente. Spain’s El País reports:

“Pablo!”, exclaimed the Venezuelan leader, embracing [him] told said that [he] was “a Chilean doctor, María’s partner and the grandson of Salvador Allende”, who he regularly says he admires and calls “the martyr president.”

The Venezuelan press had recently reported that the journalist, second daughter from Chavez’s first marriage, had managed to convince Sepúlveda Allende that he leave the medical center where he worked in the Chilean city of Coquimbo, opened by his grandfather who was also a doctor, to reside in Venezuela.

Might this be the making of a Latin American left political superfamily?

Latino blogger Perez Hilton joined Larry King last night to break down the reason why he asked Miss USA contestant, Miss California, the “fatal question”. In this clip, Perez says he didn’t mean for the question to be a “bomb” and that he could tell by the look on Miss Cali’s face that she knew she was going to lose her shot at the title because of her answer.

Hilton also alleges that television had a hand at editing out the “loud boos” that Miss California received upon stating her opposition to gay marriage.

What do you think about Perez’s stance? Is his analysis fair? Does he defend his point well?

Teabagging the U.S. Government

9:04 am By la Macha · Bizarro|Celebrities|Media · Comments Off

10 Apr 2009

Any really good properly dirty minded queer knows what teabagging is. Which is why I was pleased to see that Rachel Maddow got on her mocking shoes last night and delved in to the morass of old white men and proceeded to mock with all the innuendos at her power.

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

It’s like sex for me. I do feel better about the morass of old white men, I really really do.

The Twitter is buzzing this morning over a video of actor Billy Bob Thornton being interviewed about his musical career. Sounds pretty normal up until there, but the video is worth far more than any description I might be able to provide. Check it out (warning, this is extremely painful to watch):

My gut says this is a prank. Your thoughts? Is this just another Joaquin Phoenix-esque publicity stunt or is Billy Bob off his rocker?

Chris Brown may be getting support from some camps, but from others he’s getting dissed for being a domestic abuser. A hip-hop group called Jump Smokers is serving up some musical justice on Brown in the form of a song called “My Flow So Tight Anti-Breezy (Chris Brown should get his ass kicked)”. The lyrics are scarce, but have a distinct message:

“Boy hits girl/Boy should be taken down/No matter who’s around…All the money in the world but that’s no excuse/Career suicide, yo, here’s the noose.”

EOnline reports that Jump Smokers has vowed that “a portion of the proceeds from the single will go to various organizations for battered women.”

Check out the song above and let us know what you think. Is this just a way to capitalize on a tragic incident or an important message for listeners?
