Mexico City is clearly trying to become the most liberal city in Latin America. It legalized early term abortion and same-sex legal unions. They’ve even discussed legalizing euthanasia. Leftists senators are at it again with a plan to to legalize sex work in the capital. Juan Bustos, a legislator with the leftist party that holds a majority in the city assembly who presented the bill said:
This activity must be regulated, it can’t just take place without control, without health support for the users or the workers.

Brazilian model Gisele Bundchen is speaking out against the comments around condom use made by the Pope on his recent visit to her country:
“To prohibit condoms is ridiculous, just think of all the diseases transmitted without them,” the 26-year-old supermodel told the newspaper. She added: “How is it possible to not want people to use condoms and also not have abortions? It’s impossible, I’m sorry.”
The outspoken Gisele had previously stirred up controversy when she placed the blame for the deaths of Latin American models from eating disorders on the women’s families.
Gisele’s views on condom use and birth control seem to be shared by many of her countrymen, among them, the president of Brazil, Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, who recently defied the Pope’s warnings.

Spanish airline Iberia is in hot water for an ad they used to promote a contest for a trip to Cuba on Iberia.com. The commercial (video after the jump), which depicts a white baby (yes, baby) on a trip to Cuba, where hordes of scantily clad Cuban women dance and satisfy his every need, is at the center of the controversy. Spanish consumer rights group FACUA was outraged by the ad, calling for its immediate removal because:
…it presents “denigrating stereotypes of Cuban women, showing them as mulattas in bikinis who are at the service of tourists around the clock to dance for them, give them massages, fan them and give them food and drink”
According to Spain’s 20 Minutos, the ad was created for a promotion celebrating the 10-year anniversary of Iberia.com. And it gets worse:

Earlier this week Maegan told us about Pope Benedict‘s trip to Brazil, where he declared that leftist Mexico City legislators supporting abortion rights would be excommunicated from the church. Perhaps more controversial (and in my own opinion much more damaging) is that on his trip to Brazil — a country that is fighting hard to win a battle against the spread of HIV — he spoke against the use of condoms (like his predecessor, John Paul II), and urged the faithful to opt for abstinence instead.
The Pope met with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who is pushing for mass condom distribution throughout Brazil, but according to reports the topic of contraception was avoided, as was the other hot button issue: the legalization of abortion in Brazil, which Lula is advocating for. Then what did they talk about?
Incidentally, the Pope’s appearance in Brazil at a soccer stadium looked like a rock concert — people jamming out, sparks flying — all very un-Catholic. It reminds me of some videos I would watch in my days as an employee of a Christian bookstore (don’t ask). Click on the link to the original article below for video.

Hombres, stuck on what to get your sweetie for Valentine’s Day? According to a recent study out of the University of California, Berkeley, the sweat off your brow (or anywhere) may get the best results. The study suggests that male sweat acts as an aphrodisiac for women. Blame androstadienone, a pheromone found in male sweat. This chemical, which is sometimes added to perfumes as well, raises women’s levels of cortisol, a hormone related to stress and sexual stimulation.
And sweat is free, unlike chocolates, roses, and diamonds. Pero don’t overdo it. There is a fine line between smelling like a man and just smelling.

Brazilian school children soon may get more than just reading, writing, and arithmetic. Yesterday the health minister of the South American nation vowed to place condom vending machines inside schools. A new study conducted by the United Nations body UNESCO indicated that most Brazilian parents are a-ok with the idea.
Brazil has already been proactive in HIV and AIDS prevention among young people for at least a decade including a globally recognized program offering free condoms and sex education.

18 Dec 2006The Latin Lover stereotype isn’t just for men and now a new study is being presented to prove it. According to the study which looked at the sexual habits of women in 12 countries across 3 continents, more than half of Mexican, Brazilian, and Venezuelan women said they wanted a better and more frequest sex life. The other countries in the study were France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. The study was presented in Mexico City by the big pharma company Bayer, who no doubt will now be marketing some sort of sexual aid in Spanish.

ABC News‘ David Puente tells us on his blog, Exclusiva, how the mayor of one town is taking the problem of a dull sex life on the part of its older residents into his own hands. The solution to the issue of seniors not having enough sex (!) is, apparently, free Viagra:
“Since we started the free distribution of sexual stimulants, our elderly population changed. They’re much happier,” said Joao de Souza Luz, the mayor of Novo Santo Antonio, a small town in the central state of Mato Grosso. The program, which was approved by the town’s legislature has been dubbed “Happy Penis,” or “Pinto Alegre” in Portuguese.

Students in Buenos Aires, Argentina are going to start learning about the birds and the bees earlier than their counterparts in other countries — at age 5.
The Argentine congress has approved, with the backing of all of thecountry’s political groups, a law that makes sex education mandatory in all public and private schools in Buenos Aires. The classes will begin in March, and their content — still to be defined — will be adapted to the age of the students, according to Argentine daily ClarÃn.
The legal text says that the classes will be “pedagogical activities aimed at promoting sexual health, with the integration of the physical, emotional and intellectual and social aspects related to sexuality to promote personal well-being through communication and love”.
According to Spain’s 20 Minutos, the law also states what cannot happen in these classes:
…invading the privacy with the pretext of education, imposing conducts or ideologies in violation of human rights, or promoting prejudices or sexual stereotypes.
