Because we are Latinos, VivirLatino is covering today’s immigration protests and la huelga nacional, the national boycott, aka a day without immigrants.
As part of this special coverage, VL has created a Flickr group which will feature photos from today’s activities across the country tagged as 1mayhuelga so that we can share the experience through our eyes, the eyes of children of immigrants, as Latinos. If you are going to be out in the streets today and want to share your photographic point of view, let us know.

13 Apr 2006The rhetoric, punditry and backbiting stirred up in the media and swirling around the immigrant rights movement is getting to be a bit much. Sometimes images are more eloquent than words, so I’m posting this one.

My Flickr friend Franciscophile snapped this one at our local SF protest. It gave me a peaceful feeling in the midst of all of this hostility.
Got a picture of the protests that you consider different from what the media is showing us? Send it to us at press@vivirlatino.com

On Tuesday over 50 hunger strikers and organizations began a 7 day protest in front of the San Francisco Federal Building. This action is being coordinated to protest Senator Arlen Specter’s bill that designates all undocumented immigrants as aggravated felons, allows for the indefinite detention of non-citizens, and criminalizes day-labor centers, churches, health clinics and all others who serve, help or work with undocumented immigrants. Monday, March 27th will be the final day of the hunger strike.

If you like your mujeres with sound, some Pacifica radio stations are having special programming all day today to celebrate International Working Women’s Day. For those in my hood, New York City, you can tune into WBAI, 99.5 FM. For those in the Bay Area, you can tune to KPFA, 94.1 FM. If you don’t live in either coast, thanks to the wonder of the internet you can also listen online.

Proving that mujeres in rock can be strong, sexy and talented while singing in Spanish and not crossing over is 33 year old Mexicana Ely Guerra. At age 15 the Nuevo León native left home to pursue her musical dream in México DF. Since then she has released four full length albums, numerous EP’s and contributed tunes to films such as Amores Perros. Ely can rock out with the best of them, like she does on the track Mas Bonita. She can also sing sing sultry songs like Tu Boca. Both sides of Ely can be heard on her latest release Sweet & Sour, Hot Y Spicy . Ely Guerra isn’t compared to crossover pop Latinas like Shakira but to Alternative vocalists in both English and Spanish like Ani DiFranco and Julieta Venegas.

Looking over my ballot book this morning, I found a lot of Latino names for the various local political seats here in San Francisco:
Gerardo Sandoval (Assessor)
Jose Cisneros (Treasurer)
Manuel Valle (Treasurer)
Dennis Herrera (City Attorney, first Latino to hold office in San Francisco)
I’ve said before (as has my colleague la Mala) that I won’t vote for a Latino just because he’s Latino, or any other “minority” for that matter. I was happy to see, however, that the majority of the people on this list seem to stand for same things that I do, so yeah, in a way, I am voting Latino. But it’s just a fluke.
Are there Latinos running for office where you live? Use our contact form or the comment area to tell us about it.
VivirLatino is a daily publication published by Mamita Mala Media, dedicated to featuring all the latest politics, culture, entertainment of interest to the diverse Latin@ diaspora.
