No Doughnuts for Jersey Radio Racists

10:50 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Immigration|New Jersey|radio · Comments Off

25 Apr 2007

racistdougnut.jpgLate last month Jen wrote about a racist radio show in New Jersey that called for listeners to report and round up undocumented immigrants. New Jersey Assemblyman Wilfredo Caraballo wanted to put his money where his mouth was in terms of protesting the radio show and trying to bring it down. The way to do this? By targeting advertisers with threats of boycotts. Just as many advertisers pulled their dollars from Don Imus‘s show following his statements regarding the women’s basketball team at Rutgers University, advertisers are doing the same with “Jersey Guys” of Millennium Radio. Major names have pulled their ads, including AT&T, CVS Pharmacy, Verizon, Hyundai, Volvo, Fox TV Station, Sleepy’s, PNC Bank, Nissan Parts and Services, and most recently Dunkin Donuts.

NJ radio station calls for “illegal” roundup

5:11 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Controversia|Immigration|New Jersey|radio · Comments Off

22 Mar 2007

NJ_Monthly%20dave%202-1.jpgThere’s something ugly on the radio waves in the Garden State. Some radio DJs (always the source of such high-brow entertainment) in New Jersey have put the call out to their listeners to report “suspected illegal immigrants” to the radio station, 101.5 FM, or to authorities:

The leaders say the radio station’s campaign – named “La Cuca Gotcha” – is clearly anti-Hispanic and may encourage racial profiling and other bias incidents against Hispanics.

“It’s a despicable campaign and clearly slanted at Hispanics,” said New Jersey Assemblyman Wilfredo Caraballo. “The campaign describes us as bugs that have to be stamped out.”

Thalia on the Radio : Mottola Marriage Has It’s Privilages

2:00 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Music|radio · Comments Off

6 Mar 2007

Thalia.jpgMexican singer Thalia isn’t happy with just having a clothing line and candy in her name. She’s now going to tackle the media world with the launch of a radio show.

The Spanish-language show, called “The Conexion Thalia Radio Show,” initially will be a two-hour weekly program focusing on lifestyle and community issues affecting Latinos.

The show is set to debut on March 17 on ABC Radio Networks in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Miami and air on Saturday, most likely in the 9 a.m. or noon time slots.

“We’re excited about the partnership with ABC Radio Networks en Espanol, the best-in-class leader in national radio syndication,” said Tommy Mottola, founder of The Mottola Company. “A national radio show gives Thalia another platform to share her unlimited talent and creativity with millions of fans and listeners. I believe this will be a whole new career for her.”

Aló, Fidel! He’s still alive and kicking

1:54 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Cuba|Politics|radio|Venezuela · Comments Off

28 Feb 2007

Vivito y coleando — alive and kicking. That’s Fidel‘s current state, according to an appearance he made yesterday on his homie Hugo Chávez‘s weekly radio show, Aló Presidente. If really interested, check out the video below (with a very LONG intro, unfortunately…let it load completely then fast forward through the guy in the suit), or just read my Cliff’s Notes after the jump.

arbitron.gifWhile listening to a local radio station here in Miami, I noticed that they are constantly repeating the fact that they have placed in the top position on the radio chart yet again. Not being an expert in the radio industry, I decided to look up that claim and headed directly to Arbitron, the official stations rating format used to determine which stations are hot and which are not.

In Miami, the top spot belongs to AMOR 107.5, a Spanish-language radio station. It beat out every ‘mainstream’ radio station in the market. I received my confirmation about the Miami area, but got to thinking about the other parts of the United States that are heavily populated by the Latino community.

Hear Mamita Mala on NPR’s Latino USA

11:51 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Politics|radio|VivirLatino · 2 Comments

10 Nov 2006

282035459_m.jpgVL East Coast Editor Mamita Mala was a guest on NPR’s Latino USA radio show yesterday talking about the Latino vote in this year’s elections. Mala threw down with a Latina republican who claims that “Latinos are Republicans, they just don’t know it yet” and talked about how many Latino young people disenfranchised by both political parties. Check out the show on the Latino USA website.

If you are listening to the complete show, you can hear Mala after Univision’s Maria Elena Salinas‘ take on Latino voter intimidation. Immediately after the Latino vote segment, you can hear authors Carolina Gonzalez and Seth Kugel talk about their new book, Nueva York: The Complete Guide to Latino Life in the Five Boroughs, which I am totally buying.

And if you’ve never heard it before, Latino USA is a great show. It should be required weekly listening.

Paulina would bite Thalia’s ear off

6:26 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Chismes|mexico|radio · Comments Off

TIMBIRICHE.jpgSo much for childhood loyalties. Paulina Rubio and Thalia may have been in Timbiriche together when they were teens, but that doesn’t mean they are homies. Their eternal rivalry has been the stuff of Mexican tabloid covers for decades now. This apparently hasn’t ceased, as Paulina told a radio show — albeit in jest — that if asked to kiss Thalia a la Madonna and Britney, she’d pull a Mike Tyson and bite her ear off:

Paulina Rubio made it clear that she doesn’t like Thalia. In an appearance on the El piolín de la mañana radio show, she was asked who she would allow to kiss her a la Madonna-Britney Spears. The options were Carmen Salinas, la Chupitos or Thalía, to which “la Chica Dorada” responded without hesitation: “Thalía (…) on the ear, but like Mike Tyson,” she said, laughing.

I still remember back in the day when there was a war of words (or of songs) between la Pau and Alejandra Guzmán — and over a guy no less.

shakira-the-cure-highlight-french-show.jpgShakira’s English-language hit “Hips Don’t Lie” became the most played song in pop history earlier this week, according to Nielsen. Via Top-40Charts.com:

“Hips Don’t Lie” by Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean became the most played song in pop radio history TODAY according to Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems. The song was played more times in the week ending 6/4/06 beating out the previous record by Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl” made in the week ending 6/5/05. Shakira’s song’s total of 9,657 times played on the radio, broke Stefani’s previous record of 9,582.

Now I realize why I am starting to hate this song. I really liked it at first, but like anything else, and as they say on beer commercials “nada con exceso…todo con medida“.

In addition to boasting the most played song in history, Shakira

…also recently became the first artist in the history of the charts to earn the coveted No 1 Top 40 Mainstream song and No 1 Latin song in the same week and still holds the No 1 spot on the Latin chart.

Quite an accomplishment.

loudobbbbsbabyWEB.jpgLatino satirists Lalo Alcaraz and Esteban Zul are at it again, announcing on their Los Angeles based radio show, the Pocho Hour of Power, the name your baby Lou Dobbs contest.

The first undocumented immigrant to name their U.S. born child “Lou Dobbs,” before September 16th , 2006, will win $500.00 worth of baby nursery items from participating East Los Angeles merchants supporting the Name Your Baby Lou Dobbs Challenge.

Some people of course are missing the point, like the right-wing online World Net Daily who stated:

Though the contest was announced April 26, there have been no illegal aliens who have tried to claim the prize.

Immigration: More hate from the media

4:54 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Immigration|Media|radio|TV · 1 Comment

29 Mar 2006

ir112_freedom_rides_200x300.jpgMainstream media’s obsession with immigration just seems to grow and grow. It’s not just Lou Dobbs anymore. One can’t watch cable news in primetime without being bombarded with ignorant punditry and hate-filled diatribes. Media Matters has a couple of particularly disturbing examples today, not from cable TV but from the internet and radio:

Michelle Malkin, the Filipino-American right wing pundit says:

Apologists are quick to argue that Latino supremacists are just a small fringe faction of the pro-illegal immigration movement (never mind that their ranks include former and current Hispanic politicians from L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to former California Democratic gubernatorial candidate Cruz Bustamante).

Um, what? I’d come up with a stronger response to this statement if I thought it deserved more than just a quick “Are you smoking something?”

An Atlanta-area radio host thinks that all Latino immigrants need to be “stored” somewhere before ultimately deporting them all:

The United Nations and the Euro-weenies, who have their own immigration problem with their own “M” word; It’s Muslims for them. They will start screaming about human rights violations like you’ve never heard them screaming before. They are not going to be shipped back. I mean, Royal, think about — Mexico doesn’t want ‘em back, first of all. Think what happens if we round — first of all, where do we store 11 million Hispanics just waiting to ship ‘em back to Nicaragua, Columbia, Costa Rica, Mexico. Where do we store ‘em?

Media Matters is urging the public to contact both of these commentators to voice their opposition to the views expressed.
