It is perfectly acceptable to imply the rape of a Latina human rights activist like Isabel Garcia by a white man like Jon Justice.
But imply the rape of a national symbol turned woman, a presumed white woman raped by undocumented immigrants, implied male and Latino, and this is supposed to inspire a love of country, patriotism. That’s exactly what hate jock Michael Savage intended when he said:
[Y]ou turn on the cable news, they’re covering again a missing child. Not a missing country but a missing child. … We hear about the rape of a woman, but not about the rape of the Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty is crying, she’s been raped and disheveled — raped and disheveled by illegal aliens

Over the last 15 years of my life, where I have been an activist and blogger working with and writing about immigrant issues, being told to go back where I came from (Queens, NYC) and being threatened is nothing new. But given the current political climate being a Latina and being an outspoken advocate for the basic human rights of immigrants has become more dangerous with the battleground extending from the borders to our bodies.
Take for example Isabel Garcia and the way her work for human rights is being attacked by dehumanizing her and sexually assaulting her in effigy.
But first a little about the mujer and person that is. From Latino Politico:
There is no greater promoter of human rights and advocate for migrant families in Baja Arizona than Isabel Garcia. She was a recipient of the 2006 Premio Naciónal de Derechos Humanos, presented by the Mexican government for the first time to someone who wasn’t born there, in order to get an idea of the scope of work she’s done. Rather than accept the award, however, she took the opportunity to call a press conference and demand that the affluent and elite south of border do more to promote economic justice among the working classes. It was a perfect example of Isabel’s work to keep the focus on the underlying roots of human migration and exploitation, rather than on herself.
Isabel is one of the major driving forces behind the Coalición de Derechos Humanos, headquartered in Tucson, and that’s just when she’s wearing her organizer hat. She also serves as one of Pima County’s leading Legal Defenders, which has Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s pink underwear in a snit since apparently the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America does not apply to those who serve in government. You see, Sheriff Joe came to town recently to sign copies of his new book that blames all the ills of society on “illegals”. Well, that type of thing isn’t received the same way in Tucson as it is north of the Gila, so a protest was organized in conjunction with Sheriff Joe’s appearance. A piñata created in Arpaio’s likeness, wearing his trademark pink boxers, was…well, it was a piñata, so you can imagine.
And letting no expression of the understandable anger of the pro-immigrant community go unpunished, the anti-immigrants took to the radio airwaves. They did what they do best, spout hate, targeting Garcia, her life (because let’s be real this is about life not just making a living) and her body as a Latina woman. There were calls for her to be fired and a very clear message was sent that the body of a Latina woman is fair game.

Michael Savage, the shock jock whose bigoted rhetoric has ruffled more than a few feathers over the years has got something to say about refugees to the United States. An email from media watchdog group Media Matters fills us in:
Michael Savage asserted on June 23: “We’re getting refugees now who have never used a telephone, a toothbrush, or toilet paper. You’re telling me they’re going to assimilate? They will never assimilate. They come here and they bring their destitute ways to this country, and they never assimilate.”He continued: “And then their children become gang-bangers. It is a disaster.”
Savage added that earlier immigrants to the U.S. “had used toilet paper and toothbrushes and they knew how to survive in this country. They took a job or they worked. They didn’t come and sit and have 16 children and eat beetle nuts.”
European immigrants were “civilized” and modern day immigrants are somehow less deserving of the right to seek a new life in another country. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard that one…
If you’ve got a strong stomach you can also listen to the entire audio file on the Media Matters website.

In an NPR interview with Washington Post reporters, Dana Priest and Amy Goldstein, responsible for a four part series on the treatment of foreign detainees inside ICE detention facilities, the pair describe how medical care for those detained is decided based on manuals that tell staff what they cannot do rather on what they can do for ill inmates. But the star of the interview was a woman who called in to describe what she saw and heard when visiting her detained French fiancé. For example, she talks reveals that women inside were denied feminine hygiene products and were given rations of toilet paper and allowed to bleed on themselves.

Last week I wrote about ICED, a video game being put out by the human rights organization Breakthrough!
After to listening to an interview this morning with one of the creators of the game and some sound clips of the game, I think the game has some positive social potential, especially with otherwise unpolitical youth.

We already saw the love between Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez and el mano de dios, Diego Maradona at the Copa America. Well they want to share the love via the airwaves. Diego Maradona has been invited on as a guest on Aló Presidente, Hugo Chavez’s Sunday television and radio show. Rumors are circulating that Maradona is being considered to be the technical director of the Venezuelan national soccer team.

Late last month Jen wrote about a racist radio show in New Jersey that called for listeners to report and round up undocumented immigrants. New Jersey Assemblyman Wilfredo Caraballo wanted to put his money where his mouth was in terms of protesting the radio show and trying to bring it down. The way to do this? By targeting advertisers with threats of boycotts. Just as many advertisers pulled their dollars from Don Imus’s show following his statements regarding the women’s basketball team at Rutgers University, advertisers are doing the same with “Jersey Guys” of Millennium Radio. Major names have pulled their ads, including AT&T, CVS Pharmacy, Verizon, Hyundai, Volvo, Fox TV Station, Sleepy’s, PNC Bank, Nissan Parts and Services, and most recently Dunkin Donuts.

There’s something ugly on the radio waves in the Garden State. Some radio DJs (always the source of such high-brow entertainment) in New Jersey have put the call out to their listeners to report “suspected illegal immigrants” to the radio station, 101.5 FM, or to authorities:
The leaders say the radio station’s campaign – named “La Cuca Gotcha” – is clearly anti-Hispanic and may encourage racial profiling and other bias incidents against Hispanics.“It’s a despicable campaign and clearly slanted at Hispanics,” said New Jersey Assemblyman Wilfredo Caraballo. “The campaign describes us as bugs that have to be stamped out.”

Mexican singer Thalia isn’t happy with just having a clothing line and candy in her name. She’s now going to tackle the media world with the launch of a radio show.
The Spanish-language show, called “The Conexion Thalia Radio Show,” initially will be a two-hour weekly program focusing on lifestyle and community issues affecting Latinos.
The show is set to debut on March 17 on ABC Radio Networks in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Miami and air on Saturday, most likely in the 9 a.m. or noon time slots.
“We’re excited about the partnership with ABC Radio Networks en Espanol, the best-in-class leader in national radio syndication,” said Tommy Mottola, founder of The Mottola Company. “A national radio show gives Thalia another platform to share her unlimited talent and creativity with millions of fans and listeners. I believe this will be a whole new career for her.”
