warehouse-cells.jpgWith only 11 days to go before the Democratic National Convention jumps off in Denver, Colorado, the city is preparing space for protesters, in the form of cages topped by barbed wire.

Inside are dozens are metal cages. They are made out of chain link fence material and topped by rolls of barbed wire.

“This is a secured environment,” Capt. Frank Gale of the Denver Sheriff’s Department told CBS4. “We’re concerned about how that’s going to be utilized by people who will be potentially disruptive.”

Dr-James-Dobson-734739.jpgI never understood how Christians can wish for bad things to happen and think that falls in line with Christ’s values but yet Focus on the Family asked, half way joking, for people to pray that the skies open up and unleash torrential rain on Barack Obama’s Democratic Convention speech on August 28th in Denver.

This “humorous” Stoplight video from Focus on the Family asks people to pray for “torrential, small-stream-flooding, an umbrella ain’t gonna help you rain” on a specific time and place.

No, not any of the California fires. Denver, over the stadium where Barack Obama is set to deliver his nomination speech, that very night.

mountain-lion.jpgOnly 18 more days till the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

VivirLatino is psyched to be covering the convention as credentialed bloggers.

Something we’re not to psyched about? The possibility of mountain lions.

A mountain lion slunk into the master bedroom of an Idledale home early Monday, snatched a yellow Labrador retriever and vanished.

Churchill said the residents had left open the French doors to their bedroom, apparently to cool the house, and didn’t have screens.
The dog’s body was found near the property.

If we had a dog, we wouldn’t bring it with us to Denver.

Don’t forget, you can help VivirLatino get to the DNC by donating.

DNCC_logo_dnc2008_1_500.jpgThere are only 24 days to the Democratic National Convention, and VivirLatino will be there, with your help.

The Rocky Mountain News recently did a write up of the unprecedented number of bloggers invited to report on the DNC, with credentials and mentions VivirLatino.

We have a Latino student correspondent helping us out and making sure that a youth perspective is included in the coverage. While we have credentials to be inside, our coverage will include what’s happening outside, including protests and how the Latino community in Denver feels about the convention, especially as campaigns lay it on thick for the Latino vote.

We’ve been credentialed for the event and are ready to cover it for you, but there is still an obstacle. As a non-traditional, independent media outlet, the costs associated with the event are less than accessible for us.

Please help us get to the Democratic National Convention by contributing a donation. Right now our most immediate need is getting airfare covered.

DNCC_logo_dnc2008_1_500.jpgIs it about reaching out to the usually ignored or is it pandering to that oh so hyped Latino vote? Regardless of the reasons behind the decision, I just received a press release announcing that the Democratic National Convention through Comcast Corporation will produce simultaneous, online streaming coverage of the Convention in Spanish at DemConvention.com

From the Comcast Media Center, based in the Denver metro area, Comcast will provide live, gavel-to-gavel Spanish-language interpretation of all Convention activities from the Pepsi Center to be streamed online at DemConvention.com from August 25-28. This marks the first time a national political Convention has been completely simulcast in Spanish and made available to a worldwide audience. In addition, Comcast will place highlights, including key speeches and Spanish-language content from each night of the Convention, on its national VOD platform, available to over 16 million Comcast Digital Cable subscribers in 39 states and the District of Columbia. Comcast will also make this VOD Convention content available for distribution on other cable systems throughout the nation.

Comcast will also edit, manage and archive Convention coverage for distribution online, on cable television and via global satellite uplink.

I guess that’s good if you have cable, or internet or even a t.v. If not, well, too bad for you.

Denver Police Stock Up on Pepper Spray for the DNC

DNCC_logo_dnc2008_1_500.jpgLooks like I’ll have to pack some anti-pepper spray gear for the Democratic National Convention because the Denver Police are stocking up. From Democracy Now:

Denver Police Department is stocking up on pepper spray guns ahead of the Democratic National Convention. The city has ordered eighty-eight projectile launchers that fire plastic balls filled with cayenne pepper and other substances. Denver is purchasing the weapon from SWAT, Security with Advanced Technology. The news comes just weeks after SWAT announced plans to merge with the company Pepper Ball Technologies. Meanwhile, some residents of Denver are questioning why a half-dozen military helicopters flew over parts of the city on Monday as part of a secret security drill. The Denver Post reported the military aircraft buzzed above the Pepsi Center, the site of the Democratic Convention. A military spokesperson denied the drill was connected to the convention. Lt. Nathan Potter said,“It’s routine preparation for the global war on terrorism.”

Yeah sure. I am randomly selected for those secondary security checks at the airport.
