26 Aug 2008Loretta Sanchez called me a “girl” when I asked her about the Mississippi ICE raids that have led to the arrest of 350 people.
From Citizen Orange:
Numerous agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement descended on a factory belonging to Howard Industries Inc., which manufactures electrical transformers, among other products. As of late Monday afternoon, no criminal charges had been filed, said Barbara Gonzalez, an agency spokeswoman, but she said that dozens of workers had been “identified, fingerprinted, interviewed, photographed and processed for removal from the U.S.”

26 Aug 2008No, I’m not talking about America Ferrera I’m talking about the great Senator of New York Hillary Clinton. Yesterday, she surprised DNC Hispanic Caucus goers and gave a heart felt speech filled with commitment for the issues that matter the most for Hispanics. She spoke about comprehensive immigration reform and a stronger education system. She spoke to the heart to us, she said “I knows there maybe language Barriers but it doesn’t matter we are all American and we are all strong and we all deserve a system that works and Barack Obama and Joe Biden are going to bring that to all of us.”
She lastly addressed the cynical and GOP bigwig John McCain. She addressed the manipulative ad that his campaign started airing that included clips of her attacks on Obama.
Even though I agree with those critiques (because they are true) the GOP is making me sick with their same old tactic. The GOP should try to refresh their strategies to win an election besides frying your opponent to a crisp with vindictive ads. Hillary responded by saying “I’m Hillary Clinton, and I do not approve that message.” I think that explains why Americans should love Hillary.

I missed Hillary Clinton speaking at the Hispanic DNC Caucus because I was dealing with the nightmare that was the picking up of credentials. But our student correspondent, Estevan, was there so he’ll be blogging his thoughts later.
I did arrive in time to see Howard Dean, who focused on the need to register Latinos and get them to vote. He also spoke of how the Republicans scapegoat Latinos and how McCain flip-flopped on his own immigration reform plan.

After a long ass and insane trip in that included McCain fans in LaGuardia Airport, avoiding tornadoes while sitting in the narrowest airline seats ever next to a scientist who built a telescope in the South Pole (Hi Jeff!), to a stupid shuttle, I mean super shitty shuttle that took me three hours from when I landed in Denver to get me to my hotel, to almost not having a room to sleep in because of massive credit card machine failure. After all that VivirLatino esta presente at the Democratic National Convention!

The Democratic National Convention is only days away, and everyone is getting themselves beautiful for the event, including the homeless in Denver.
There are an estimated 4,000 homeless people in the DNC host city and instead of attempting to find real solutions, it’s much easier to do a makeover. That is, hide them from view, pretend they don’t exist, and fix em up so they don’t look so unsightly.
They arranged for free movie passes and bingo games to get them off the street, as well as temporary housing and free tickets to the zoo and Museum of Nature and Science…According to Rick Sallinger of the CBS TV station, Denver Human Services has been handing out coupons for free homeless haircuts.
But what happens when the media eye shifts away from Denver and the balloons have been deflated?

With the Democratic National Convention kicking off in exactly one week and VivirLatino being there live to cover the action, we feel it’s important to look at the community around where the convention is taking place. Given all the media play given to the Latino vote, what of the Latinos in Denver?
One art exhibition in Denver now through the end of the month, seeks to answer that question through the lens of 6 Denver area Latino artists.
Chicano Humanities Arts Council Presents
Artistas Revolucionarios Aug. 1-30 in Denver
A daring palette, subversive strokes and renegade self-expression are characteristics of Artsitas Revolucionarios; a slightly less than seditious show on display through August that showcases the talent of six emerging and established Denver Latino/a artists.
The work, which includes a superb collection of colorful paintings, drawings and jewelry, serves as a glorious reminder of the vibrant cultural art scene our city has to offer.Los artistas are CHAC Board Members Tony Vecchio, Danny Vigil (website), Javier Flores and Jeanette Montoya; CHAC’s Education Director, Veronica Herrera; and this year the show includes CHAC member JOLT.
VivirLatino is going to check out the exhibit when we’re in Denver.
You can find out more about the exhibit here.
With only 11 days to go before the Democratic National Convention jumps off in Denver, Colorado, the city is preparing space for protesters, in the form of cages topped by barbed wire.
Inside are dozens are metal cages. They are made out of chain link fence material and topped by rolls of barbed wire.
“This is a secured environment,” Capt. Frank Gale of the Denver Sheriff’s Department told CBS4. “We’re concerned about how that’s going to be utilized by people who will be potentially disruptive.”
VivirLatino is a daily publication published by 2 Mujeres Media, dedicated to featuring all the latest politics, culture, entertainment of interest to the diverse and influential Latino and Latina community in the U.S.
