A homegirl of mine shared this information on one of the few scholarships available for LGBTQ people who are also undocumented. The Pride Foundation does not ask for social security numbers or immigration status. Folks living in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington are eligible. Deadline is January 31.  Please share with folks who may be interested!

This Saturday the 11th, there will be a listening party for the release of the SPEAK! Radical Woman of Color Media Collective‘s spoken-word CD.

The It Is Better To SPEAK! listening party will be held Saturday, the 11th, at 7 to 9 pm at In Other Words Women’s Books and Resources, 8 B NE Killingsworth St., Portland, OR, 97211. All are welcome. Bring a friend and spread the word! I’ll see you there.

The CD, a compilation of poetry, prose, story and song, is packed with the work of people you know, including Blackamazon, Brownfemipower, Cripchick, Little Light, Sylvia, and many others including yours truly, la Mala.

As my dear Little Light said:

We made this project with love and held hands and hard work, and we’re proud to present it as a fundraiser to help get some radical mamis of color to the Allied Media Conference and support them in their activism.
At the listening party, you’ll have a chance to come together and hear the album, discuss it, and take it home with you. We’ve put together a whole curriculum, written together, to help facilitate, and both I and Adele Nieves, producer and contributor, will be present to help get things shaking.

Not all cities and counties in the U.S. are putting anti-immigrant measures into effect. Chatham County NC, which towns include Pittsboro and Siler City, home to the majority of North Carolina’s poultry processors, passed a resolution indicating strong opposition to any of its law enforcement agencies contracting with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. (ICE)

The program in question is called the 287(g) program. It authorizes ICE and local law enforcement agencies to enter into an agreement to provide local law enforcement officers with training so they could function under the supervision of sworn ICE officers.

Under the program, every person charged with a crime, whether it’s for driving without a license or murder, is asked certain questions to determine if they are legally within the United States. If a person is determined to be an illegal alien, then the person would be held for deportation.

Meanwhile, in Oregon:

Columbia County Circuit Court Judge Ted E. Grove today issued a preliminary injunction that will prevent an anti-immigrant ballot measure from taking effect on February 2.

The ACLU/NWJP challenge contends that Measure 1-590, which would fine employers for hiring or employing undocumented immigrants:

• Exceeds the powers of Columbia County as granted by the state of Oregon;
• Violates the Single Subject requirement of the Oregon Constitution; and
• Is preempted by existing state laws, as well as land-use statutes and regulations.

Measure 5-190 relies on E-Verify, a federal database designed to check employees’ names against Social Security records. That database has proven to be very flawed and ineffective. One transposed digit or misspelled name could flag longtime citizens as “illegal.”

21obama03_600.jpgAs I watched Barack Obama, with his wife and two daughters, cross the stage at his Iowa rally last night, I got to admit I thought, “How awesome would it be if this was the first family?”. Last night, Obama returned to the state whose primary acted as a crystal ball of what the rest of his campaign would look like. Last night Obama broke a significant barrier last night, earning a majority of pledged delegates. What makes this even more important is the fact that many unpledged delegates have said that they will go for whoever has the majority. In this case Obama.

But playing it smart, Obama didn’t say that it was over. Instead in Iowa last night he played the perfect Democrat politician, expressing his solidarity with the family of ailing Ted Kennedy, lavishing praise on Hillary Clinton, and saying the nomination of his party was within reach.

Portland, Oregon : Latest Immigrant Redada

bc_060322fastimmigfedbldg5571g_100.jpgAn investigation as to unsafe working conditions at a Del Monte processing plant led to 167 undocumented workers facing possible deportation. On Tuesday feds conducted a raid at the Fresh Del Monte Produce Co. plant near the Portland shipyards. Some of the unsafe conditions found were:

• Electrical extension cords were in standing water, supervisors were not diligent about the cleanliness of vegetables before boxing for shipment, and the employee bathroom and cafeteria were “extremely dirty.”
• There were about 3 inches of cold water on the production-area floor, where most workers wore sneakers or shoes even though they were supposed to be provided with boots.
• Workers were not paid overtime.
• Shift supervisors were constantly yelling at workers and were “extremely rude.”

Unfortunately 167 people now face the lack of safety their families found in a paycheck. Many of those arrested in the raid were mothers who now worry about their future as breadwinners and their ability to stay in the U.S. with their children.

story.three.firemen.jpgOregon isn’t buying into that English only nonsense, in fact not being bilingual, speaking English and Spanish, can get you fired if you’re a firefighter. Because of the problems of wildfires in Oregon, there is no language requirements for firefighters. According to Jim Walker with the Oregon Department of Forestry:

What we do know is 85 percent of the crew makeup is of Hispanic descent.

Because of this in 2003 a State law was made requiring bosses who manage firefighting crews be bilingual to ensure communication and safety. But not everyone is happy about this requirement. Some people are losing their positions because they cannot speak Spanish.
