28 Oct 2010Con la Vista al Voto : From now until election day 2010, VivirLatino is going to have at least one post a day looking at the midterm elections and issues around the election including policy and the much hyped Latino vote.
I lean way left, which is why I come down on both of the main political parties in the U.S. I pointed out the disgusting campaign ads coming from some Republicans hoping for votes next week, but today I bring you an ad from a Democrat in Ohio.
Transcript: “I’m Zack Space and I approve this message. Bob Gibbs genius jobs plan: more free trade with China. Now his latest gem: a so-called guest worker program for illegal immigrants. Here’s what Gibbs just said: “We need a guest worker program so they can come in for a good job and then go back to their country.” Brilliant, Bob. So while you’re fighting to keep your job, Gibbs wants to give it to illegal immigrants. Bob Gibbs: a jobs plan for Mexico and China—not Ohio.”

3 Jun 2010When the perception is that a law will only impact the lives of “others” whom you have already dehumanized it’s easy to make fun, make light, and make a game. For many Latinos in Arizona, SB1070 is not a game. Living in Maricopa County under Sheriff Joe has never been fun.
Columbus, Ohio, radio station WTVN-AM thinks that racial profiling is fun!

The contest allegedly was a reaction to Columbus Mayor, Michael Coleman’s decision to ban city employees from visiting Arizona on official business in protest of the new law.

22 Jul 2009An Ohio Latino teen, Robert Cantú (seen in the video above) was allegedly the victim of an unspeakable hate crime: last year, he was reportedly tied by his neck with a noose and dragged by a pickup truck in his hometown of Mount Vernon.
According to Cantu the incident occurred on or about May 30, 2008. Cantu said he was with a friend when Klein and three others jumped him, and tied a rope with a noose around his neck. The other end of the rope was tied to a truck and Cantu said he was dragged for several feet. After stopping the truck, the attackers, allegedly including Klein, exited the truck and began to attack Cantu. According to Cantu, a passer-by, Ezzy Thompson, who was known to Cantu, intervened, chasing off the attackers and removing the noose from Cantu’s neck.“[Thompson] was with his girlfriend,” said Cantu. “He saw me on the ground and ran over and pushed the guys off me. He got the noose off me. I’ve known Ezzy for about eight years. He was just in the area.”
Cantú’s mother said it took police 10 months to make an arrest, and that only happened after the Anti-Defamation League applied pressure to authorities.
But that’s not all. A second victimization of Robert has also just happened, as his harasser, also a teenager, has been sentenced to a mere 10 days in jail after a plea deal.
LULAC Ohio is hosting a “Vigil for Justice” this Friday in Mount Vernon. Details after the jump.

18 Jun 2009This morning in my inbox I received another email telling me, and whoever else was on this advocacy org’s coveted mailing list, that I should be vigilant about the rising tide of hate crimes and yet again the point of reference was the Holocaust Museum shooting.
Do I really need a reminder? Do I need to hear the frenzied 911 call of a mother after seeing her husband and daughter shot and killed? I know that audio is going around some blogs and media sites and I have refused to listen for my own personal sanity as a Latina mother but also as a statement against the exploitation of the pain of Latinas for the sake of “the story”
Would Hate Crimes legislation made a difference? Would it have prevented a Latino young man from having a noose placed around his neck and dragged around a parking lot in Ohio? Maybe if the young man would have died his lie would have been worth more than the paltry sentence his horror was met with.
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – A central Ohio teenager accused of putting a noose around a Hispanic boy’s neck and dragging him in a parking lot has been sentenced to 10 days in jail.
The 18-year-old was sentenced Wednesday in juvenile court in Mount Vernon, a city of 15,000 residents an hour’s drive northeast of Columbus. He dropped his original plea of not guilty and pleaded no contest to ethnic intimidation.
A charge of aggravated menacing was dropped.

16 Oct 2008Joe the Plumber was the estrella of last night’s debate, with his name being thrown around left, right, and sideways. CBS interviewed the man of the hour, Joe the plumber and it turns out he’s kind of racist, no? I mean I know “tap dancin around an issue” is a figure of speech pero then when he adds the whole Sammy Davis Jr. line into it, no se, it kind of takes it to a different level.

It’s hard for me not to take a terrorist attack against Muslim children, women and men saying their Ramadan prayers in an Ohio mosque personally. No I am not Muslim pero many of my friends and neighbors are. I see the 12 year old girls, their toddler cousins and sisters being led in the early morning, before the sun rises, to say prayers with their grandmothers, mothers and fathers. Even the youngest among them knows to say they are going to church, not to mosque. They know the conversations in school about what terrorism looks like and they are told it looks like the faces they see in the mirror every morning.
Friday, September 26th ended a week in which thousands of copies of Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West — the fear-mongering, anti-Muslim documentary being distributed by the millions in swing states via DVDs inserted in major newspapers and through the U.S. mail — were distributed by mail in Ohio. The same day, a “chemical irritant” was sprayed through a window of the Islamic Society of Greater Dayton, where 300 people were gathered for a Ramadan prayer service. The room that the chemical was sprayed into was the room where babies and children were being kept while their mothers were engaged in prayers.

We told you it was only a matter of time before we were announcing and denouncing the latest ICE raid. Yesterday ICE targeted 8 restaurants in Northern Ohio and arrested 58 people.
All those arrested were citizens of Mexico and working at Casa Fiesta, a chain of Mexican restaurants in Ashland, Fremont, Norwalk, Oberlin, Oregon, Sandusky, Vermillion and Youngstown, Ohio, Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a statement.
It said the raid was the culmination of more than a yearlong investigation.
Of the 58 arrested, 54 were men. Three of the four women were released on their own recognizance on humanitarian grounds, ICE said. They are still required to appear before a federal immigration judge who will determine whether they have a legal right to remain in the United States.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, or just tend to ignore these types of things, Hillary Clinton had her comeback moment last night, winning the primaries in both Texas and Ohio (and Rhode Island).
I haven’t read all the media this morning but I just know everyone is gonna thank that Latino vote. Oh wait here’s something:
Exit polls also showed Hispanics casting 30 percent of the Texas Democratic primary vote, giving Clinton nearly two-thirds of their votes and giving her once again the domination she had enjoyed among Hispanic voters in California, New York and New Jersey on Super Tuesday.
