Election day is finally over and the Republicans have taken the majority in the House of Representatives, the Democrats have held on to their majority in the Senate, and the Tea Party delivered in some races. What role did the Latino vote play in yesterday’s election? Did voter suppression efforts work to keep Latinos at home? Did Latinos vote by not filling out ballots?

While pundits and electoral analysts will be looking at the numbers for awhile, there are some early stats that show that the Latino vote played an important role in some key races. For example, in Nevada, where Democratic Senator Harry Reid faced a threat via the politics of hate of Sharon Angle, Reid held on to his seat. According to early exit polls reported by the Wall Street Journal, 16% of the Senate electorate yesterday was Hispanic and Reid’s magic number, if you will, to defeat Angle, was 15%. According to a poll sponsored by Latino Decisions, the National Council of La Raza, SEIU, and America’s Voice the breakdown looks like this:

Latino vote for Governor
Rory Reid: 84%
Brian Sandoval: 15%

Latino share of voters: 12%
Latino contribution to R. Reid: +8.5

Latino vote for Senate
Harry Reid: 90%
Sharron Angle: 8%

Latino share of voters: 12%
Latino contribution to H. Reid: +9.8

There will more to report later following some press conferences this afternoon.

Con la Vista al Voto : From now until election day 2010, VivirLatino is going to have at least one post a day looking at the midterm elections and issues around the election including policy and the much hyped Latino vote.

The latest from the Sharon Angle hate machine is a “game” or rather a campaign ad disguised as a Monopoly type game. The ad depicts Reid, dressed as Mr. Moneybags, as spending the voters’ money and giving jobs and amnesty to the undocumented. Friends of Angle, the official org behind the ad uses stats from the Pew Hispanic Center.

Republican Angle, who is running against the Senate Majority Leader, Democrat Harry Reid, according to the latest poll released yesterday by CNN and Time, is leading. This poll was questioned on MSNBC last night, with talking heads suggesting oversampling. Today, even the right wing is calling the latest numbers into question, saying no one under 50 was polled.

Just a week away from the midterm elections an Republicans across the United States are pulling out all the stops, that is appealing to the lowest common denominator by representing all immigrants as Latinos and Latinos as criminals, hellbent on riding in limos and denying little white children access to the English language.

Think I’m exaggerating? Look at Louisiana Senator David Vitter’s ad. Then we have Republican Senate candidate in Nevada, Sharron Angle who can’t tell the difference between Latinos and Asians (and those that may be both) when speaking to Latino youth, but seems to be crystal clear as to who (white) families need to blame and be afraid of.

I have been critical of the expectation of the Latino vote as some life changing revolutionary force. I have been equally critical of those who see Latinos not voting Democrat as an act of laziness and apathy as opposed to an act of protest.

But let me be clear, those who would use the agency of Latinos who decide not to vote or who decide not to vote Democrat as a way to further divide along the lines of race and divert our eyes from the real enemies of Latino communities, well that’s just dirty and they aren’t representative of Latinos who want movement.

Watching this video ad, the Spanish version is slated to run in Nevada, and hearing that it comes from an org named “Latinos for Reform” you might think, damn they have a point and I’m down for reform.

Except Latinos for Reform is run by a Robert Deposada, a conservative Republican political consultant whose vision of reform doesn’t line up with the needs of Latinos.

mccain.gifIt takes some cojones for John McCain to run a radio ad in New Mexico, with a Latino governor and once presidential rival, claiming that he’s “unidos” with the Latino err Hispanic population. But he went there anyway. Here’s the transcript of the latest Latino targeted ad to come from the Republican presidential hopeful.

ANNCR: When we are buying groceries, we don’t have a political party. When we are filling up the gas tank, we are not Republicans, Democrats or Independents. We are Hispanics, and we all are hurting together in this uncertain economic time. We need someone that has a good economic plan, and that is John McCain. His plan is a realistic plan, not a political one, and it will help jump-start the local and national economies.

He proposed to Congress a federal gas-tax holiday for the summer months. He wants middle-class families to pay less taxes so we can have more money in our pocket and less in Washington. And he wants to help families hurt by the housing crisis under his HOME Plan.

He is optimistic and knows that we all, “unidos,” together, Republicans, Democrats, and Independents, can find a better way to fill up our tanks, our shopping carts, and our dreams.

That’s why in (Nevada/New Mexico), “Estamos Unidos con John McCain.”

JOHN MCCAIN: I’m John McCain and I approve this message.

ANNCR: Paid for by John McCain 2008.

english_only.jpgEnglish-only measures are popping up all over the country in an effort to create more barriers for undocumented immigrants. One of the latest proposals comes from Sin City, Las Vegas Republican State Senator Bob Beer and when it was presented before the Government Affairs Committee, the proposal wasn’t met with open arms.

“Your proposal is racist in intent and is being proposed to divide Nevadans at the cost of the rights of Hispanic Nevadans,” said Rene Cantu of the Latin Chamber of Commerce in Las Vegas, adding that Latinos make up one fourth to one third of the state’s population.
“You’re not Hispanic and you apparently don’t understand what the Hispanics are up against in this community,” testified John Mendoza, a long-time public servant who has served as a judge and district attorney.
