From : World Music News Wire:
Shifting mix is Ferrer’s specialty. Ferrer, once a major figure in Cuba’s nueva trova of the 1960s, has created his own distinctive and dynamic palette of Cuban sounds, which he has dubbed changüisa, a feminine word playing on changüí and a pithy challenge to Latin musical machismo. It became a vehicle to engage tradition without slavishly following what Ferrer dismisses as “the old formula” in Cuban music.
“Changüisa is always changing,” Ferrer explains. “The concept of changüisa presupposes transformation. I created the term to describe the free intention to tackle tradition, the transformative intention. It assumes both closeness to the changui and to creativity, a concept that both unites and reconstructs traditions.”

16 Mar 2011If I want to have a good cry over heartache, my go-to music is Marc Anthony, Alejando Fernandez, y Maná. This week, Maná, who teeter on that line between pop/rock in Spanish, released their new single Lluvia Al Corazón.
What do you think. Do the musicos Mexicanos still bring it or does it sound like more of the same?

New York’s most avant-garde Latino reading series peeks over the edge this month with a reading dedicated to PUNK and the various meanings it has come to embrace. As a popular music movement in the Mexican “desmadre” scene and as a very top-secret phenomenon in Cuba, punk music has seduced Latinos all around the globe.
Grab a beer, kick back, and listen to the peculiar perspectives of Dan Lopez, J Skye Cabrera, Sam J Miller, Charlie Vázquez, Roberto Plena Irizarry and the inimitable East Village performance art originator Ms. Penny Arcade herself for an unforgettable evening of words and music. Try to beat that!

25 Feb 2011Not having satellite television means missing out on the Festival de Viña del Mar en Chile. While some of the lesser known artists can be reminiscent of a bad American Idol audition video, when the stars come out on stage they really shine. Case in point Calle 13. And as much as I want to dislike some of their sexist messaging, there are times like two nights ago at la Quinta Vergara where they make you go hmm.
Not only did they call out homophobia, which has been in the headlines in Chile recently, including criticism at the Festival itself, but Residente, also had a message for the Mapuche written on his back. Now this last action, reminded me of Lady Gaga’s so called pro-DREAM act act where wearing a tee shirt = activism. But who knows if Residente’s body graffiti made people google Mapuche.
Plus, They performed with Inti-Illimani and the song Latinoamérica felt especially powerful in that place.
Check it…

Ay so much politica is making my head hurt a little so I bring you this musical break featuring ¡NOTA,, a Puerto Rican a capella group with with version of “My Girl”.
Some people will think that redoing this classic song is disrespectful and I am a little concerned about the musical trend of adding a bachata rhythm to everything but still I thought it was kinda sweet.

16 Feb 2011I have a love/hate relationship with Calle 13. Some of their lyrics are hot but then they say some stuff that goes beyond dirty talk and seems sexist. Now they release a video for their song “Baile de los Pobres” . The video is supposed to be kind of a big deal because:
1: It has a naked guy in it (we’re featuring the edited version below)
2: The video was directed by Diego Luna.
The story isn’t anything out of the ordinary, star cross rich girl, poor boy lovers with a hell of lot of “exoticizing” going on which seems very not cool to me.
Que creen?
Vicente Garcia just released his debut album, Melodrama, and while I haven’t heard the other tracks on it, I was so endeared by this video of his live performance filmed at Casa de Teatro, Santo Domingo, Republica Dominicana that I had to share it. It seemed a perfect way to start this “holiday” and anyway, he’s kind of hot no?
Now this is how I like my Bachata Baladas, all sweet and romantic, perfect for Valentine’s Day.

9 Feb 2011As I deal with moving servers and other administrative issues, I am happy to report that Shakira’s latest song/video release is in Spanish where we see a little of the Shaki that, at least I fell in love with, the Shaki who sings Spanish language power rock baladas about longing, amor ,and new starts.
Thank goddess it’s not that She-Wolf loba howling cosa. Now if only she would go back to her natural hair color
Here’s the video for Sale el Sol:
Updates on musica y films are long overdue and there are several coming up! One of the first album reviews is Rita Indiana y Los Misterios (I know I’m a bit late), pero thought even if you are/not as late as I am you’d enjoy some of these songs as you prepare for 2011.

20 Dec 2010I wasn’t able to cover the actions in the Senate this weekend because I was travelling and engaging in some collaborative learning (porque VivirLatino survives/thrives as I do). Pero I have been thinking, spinning the gears in my head y heart and will attempt to get through as much as I can throughout the day, pero that said….this goes out to all the DREAMers, especially ones whom I have met personally and have deeply touched me.
And si I know the video is ridiculously cheesy pero hey
