21 May 2010President Obama may have reaffirmed his commitment to Comprehensive Immigration Reform, again, but DREAM Act students aren’t having it anymore. Tired of living in limbo and having their experience used as a wedge issue in the wider immigration reform movement, they have been stepping it up hardcore through a series of civil disobedience actions and now hunger strikes aimed at getting a stand alone DREAM Act.
The escalation was set off by the brave actions of students in Arizona, who now face deportation following a sit-in in Senator John McCain’s Arizona office. Fear is not winning however, as more students risk arrest and deportation in the name of having their DREAM fulfilled.
Yesterday, 9 U.S. citizen students were arrested in an act of solidarity with their undocumented brothers and sisters for blocking Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles.

18 May 2010In case you haven’t heard, my home state, Michigan, is working to implement Arizona’s SB 1070 in Michigan. Thank God, resistance is flowing free since the announcement came. Please spread the word!
May 29: Town Hall Meeting in Detroit
Michigan Is Not the Next Arizona &
“Know Your Rights” Educational MeetingSaturday, May 29th, 1:00 PM
St. Anne’s Church, Parish Hall
1000 St. Anne, DetroitOne week ago, a State Representative announced her intention to bring an Arizona-style anti-immigrant law to Michigan.
We know Michigan is better than this. We know that racism is unacceptable, and legalized racial-profiling is not an option.
But we need to stand up before this awful law gains any more ground. Please attend a town hall meeting against bringing an Arizona-style law to Michigan. We will call on our leaders to publicly oppose legalized discrimination.
ALSO, we will provide important information for the immigrant community regarding your rights. ICE and Border Patrol are targeting our communities with increased deportations. Families need to know how to respond.

Michigan became the thirteenth state to legalize the physician supervised possession and use of cannabis. According to early returns, more than 60 percent of Michigan voters decided in favor of Proposal 1, which establishes a state-regulated system regarding the use and cultivation of medical marijuana by qualified patients…Meanwhile, in Massachusetts, some 65 percent of voters (and virtually every town) decided “yes” on Question 2, which reduces minor marijuana possession to a fine-only offense…
Question 2 is expected to become law in 30 days — making Massachusetts the thirteenth state to decriminalize the personal possession and use of cannabis.

Yesterday Mitt Romney won the Republican party primary in Michigan proving two things: 1- It’s easy to win in a state where your daddy was once governor and 2 – the Republicans across the country aren’t all behind the same person. Senator John McCain won in New Hampshire and Mike Huckabee won Iowa.
With 97 percent of the electoral precincts reporting, Mr. Romney had 39 percent of the vote, compared with 30 percent for Mr. McCain and 16 percent for Mr. Huckabee. Ron Paul, the antiwar congressman from Texas, came in fourth with 6 percent of the vote.
Hispanic families in the city of Pontiac, Michigan are being warned about three men that, police say, are targeting Hispanic families.
Leeatrice Williams, Lartis Mosley Jr., and Marquelle Warner are suspected of breaking into a half-dozen homes in the Michigan city and authorities warn that their locale of crime may extend to the Detroit area.
Police have noticed that all of the victims of the three men are Hispanic and believe that they will strike again. If anyone knows the whereabouts of these men or has any tips to provide, please contact the police immediately.

Another proposal that was passed by voters yesterday was a ballot proposal in Michigan which basically makes it legally ok for public universities and other civil service arenas to discriminate against women and people of color. Proposal 2 won 58 percent to 42 percent, with the majority of votes coming from white male conservatives, based on exit polls according to DiversityInc. The proposal had the mis-leading name of The Michigan Civil Rights Initiative (MCRI), leading one to wonder if everyone who voted yes realized they were voting against civil rights.

Ok anti-immigrant activists, get your cheer on and start your engines cuz this bit of new should make you all a little happy. Telemundo is reporting that at least 21 Mexican women have been fired from their jobs at Wolvering Packing in Detriot for missing work and participating in a pro-immigration march on March 27. A rep for the company said that the women, some who are undocumented, were told that their pressence was needed at work that day and if they missed work they would be fired.
Although Latinos represent less than 4 percent of the population of the state of Michigan, Latinos are three times more likely to live in areas that have high levels of air pollution.
In general minorities and impoverished families are more likely to breathe unhealthy air. It’s unfortunate that those on the bottom rung of the economic ladder always seem to face the most obstacles in trying to “make it.”
