Republicans diss Latino officials

Elephant.jpgWhile Democratic hopefuls for the 2008 presidential campaign will participate in a candidate forum hosted by the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) in Orlando, Florida tomorrow, the GOP candidates – with the exception of one — decided to skip the event all together. ABC News reports:

Friday’s Republican forum? Canceled. Only Rep. Duncan Hunter of California agreed to show. The other candidates cited scheduling conflicts, including a Saturday debate in Iowa, which Hunter also planned to attend.

“The Republican candidates have blown off Hispanics in Florida,” said state Rep. Juan Zapata, a Republican who helped bring the NALEO event to the state.

They didn’t just blow off Latinos in Florida. This shows a disregard for Latino voters in general. And what’s interesting is that if there were ever a place where Republicans might find an easy Latino audience, Florida would be it. Perhaps for that reason they think their time is better spent courting Latinos in non-stronghold states?

It will be interesting to hear what happens at NALEO tomorrow with the Democrats, and we’ll keep you posted.

Estefano_200705271217349210_afp.jpgEstefano, the acclaimed Colombian songwriter known for his collaborations with artists such as Gloria Estefan, Marc Anthony and Thalia, among others, was shot last Friday at his own home, presumably in a planned hit. EFE reports today that the artist remains in stable but critical condition:

The songwriter is in Intensive Care at Jackson Memorial Hospital [Miami] and, according to physicians, his life is not in danger, unless unexpected complications arise. A spokesperson for the police said that they are investigating under what circumstances the shooting, which occurred at the mansion of the producer in the exclusive Venetian Causeway area, took place.

Estefano was reportedly shot in the chest and the head by his handyman, Francisco Oliveira, who was delivering marijuana to the songwriter. Oliveira has since been arrested.

Spider-Man Speaks Spanish

hombre_arana_3_042707.jpgThis Friday, the highly anticipated Spider-Man 3 is opening in theaters nationwide. If you’re going to be in the Miami area for the opening, though you may want to get used to saying El Hombre Araña 3. That’s because film goers there can watch Peter Parker speaking Spanish since there will be a dubbed version available on the big screen. Usually people have to wait for the DVD version to watch their favorite films in Castellano or settle for sub-titles. Just goes to show you how big a force the Spanish speaking community is. How do you say spidey senses in Spanish?

premios_billboard_logo.jpgI watched parts of the Premios Billboard de la Musica Latina live on Telemundo (canal 47 here in NYC) last night ( I channel flipped among the awards, Ugly Betty/Grey’s Anatomy, a PBS documentary about NYC history, and a repeat of a Summerstage concert I saw live with Seu George). The pre-show was a one big advertisement with stars walking down a green carpet sponsored by the green bottled beer (that shall remain nameless) and the Target dog was flashed across the screen more than once.

The local coverage here seemed to be dominated by telenovela stars like Gabriela Spanic who spoke out against President Hugo Chavez’s ban on telenovelas saying he’s taking away jobs from Venezuelans. Thankfully they showed male telenovela stars to like the oh so yummy Dame Chocolate star Carlos Ponce who was one of the main presenters of the evening.

As usual the fashion was dominated by women with plunging necklines revealing thousands of dollars worth of implants like la bon bon asesina Ninel Conde who showed more silicone than the FDA should allow in one woman.

arbitron.gifWhile listening to a local radio station here in Miami, I noticed that they are constantly repeating the fact that they have placed in the top position on the radio chart yet again. Not being an expert in the radio industry, I decided to look up that claim and headed directly to Arbitron, the official stations rating format used to determine which stations are hot and which are not.

In Miami, the top spot belongs to AMOR 107.5, a Spanish-language radio station. It beat out every ‘mainstream’ radio station in the market. I received my confirmation about the Miami area, but got to thinking about the other parts of the United States that are heavily populated by the Latino community.

Bio: From Wikipedia, “Emilio Estéfan, Jr. was born March 4, 1953 and is a Cuban musician and producer of Lebanese ancestry. In 1968, Estefan moved to the United States, where he shared an apartment with 15 family members. He earned a living by running errands for neighbors, using an old car. Estefan then began to work at local beauty contests, and at Bacardi, where he was employed as a mailroom worker. He later was promoted to the company’s Latin marketing department.
Estefan’s real passion, however, remained with music. He started a group which became known as the “Miami Latin Boys”. The group had success, being hired to play at multiple private parties and events around Miami. It was during one such event in 1975 that Emilio met Gloria Estefan, then Gloria Fajardo.

070613_PJ_sexyph1.jpgLast night Univision aired the third annual Premios Juventud live from Miami complete with a blue carpet to welcome the estrellas and semi-estrellas. Many of the usual suspects were present including Don Omar, RBD, Alejandra Guzman, Ivy Queen, Calle 13, India, Bacilos , Thalia and Bobby Larios (sans Niurka). Notably absent were Shakira, who is on her nation-wide Oral Fixation tour and Daddy Yankee, who actually was booed when he won Artista Favorita de Musica Urbana. The fashion on the blue welcome mat was tetas and culos for the women, with the exception of Thalia, who wore a short gold dress for her entrance.

vamosacuba.jpgBy order of a Miami-Dade County school board the book “Vamos a Cuba” and its English-language version, “A Visit to Cuba” must be removed from all Miami-Dade County school libraries. Porque? According to one board member who supports the ban, Perla Tabares Hantman:

A book that misleads, confounds or confuses has no part in the education of our students, most especially elementary students, who are most impressionable and vulnerable.

What’s so confusing and misleading about the books? Well it shows Cuban children smiling wearing their school uniforms. Everyone knows Cuban children never smile! But other countries shouldn’t feel bad. The school board voted to get rid of books from the same series about Greece, Mexico and Vietnam (What no China? Oh that’s right the U.S. has billion dollar trade treaties with them). It’s one thing to get rid of books because they are outdated. It’s another thing to ban books because of their “political content”. I thought democracies didn’t ban books. Silly me.

billboardlatino2005jpg.jpg I’ll admit to being a little bit amargada that I couldn’t be in Miami tonight covering the Latin Billboard Awards live but I’ve tuned into Telemundo anyway to see the promised excitement and well so far am finding the same old same old. Daddy Yankee had his entrance exagerado. RBD was nominated three times in one category and won (oh what a surprise-bring it on RBD fans). Shakira won within the first 10 minutes of the show and looked casual and comfy against the parade of novela protagonistas with over the top gowns and culo baring dancers. There was a well deserved tribute to Rocio Durcal and my favorite performance, given by the Cubano hip hoppers, Orishas. Shakira just took stage singing Hips Don’t Lie with Wycliff Jean. And with that I think I’ll call it a night. I’m sure whatever I miss will be on Cada Día with Maria Antonieta Collins in the morning.

rbd.jpg Thank you all of you who joined us for VL’s first live blog. I know that Jen and I had a great time watching and writing our reactions to the Premio lo Nuestro. We all know who won pero I’m not quite done (Mira, I rhymed). I agree with Jennifer who reported that the sound quality overall was horrible. The theme of the evening to me seemed to be the growth of two major Latino musical genres: reggaeton and pop. A clear sign of this was the fact that Daddy Yankee was seated next to honorary Latina (will you all be happy with that?) Laura Pausini. Did you all peep Fat Joe sitting in the audience?
