Liveblogging the Univision Republican Debate

foro_republicano3.jpgEducation: Public school reform should be a priority, how to do that. Thompson said that the responsibility of fixing education needs to be on the local level. McCain said that choice and competition are the key. Poor teachers should be fired and poor schools should be closed. Sounds like he wants to privatize education. Romney said we have a good model already. Teaching children English is a key to success as is testing based on standards. Better teachers should be payed better (merit pay).

Huckabee, how to stop high Latino dropout rate? Huckabee said many kids fail because they are bored. That we need not just math and English but also music and art. Giuliani reminded everyone that he’s a result of Catholic schools (and Jesus is still kicking himself over it I’m sure). Giuliani is using his example to promote school choice.

Live Blogging Univision Republican Debate

7:40 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Miami|Politics|TV · 6 Comments

9 Dec 2007

foro_republicano3.jpgAll candidates said that there was no risk in coming to the Univision debate.
Finally, the English only question. McCain said that English should be the official language and that all who come here should learn English and he will help them. Ron Paul said that bashing bilingualism is wrong but the official language should be English.

Next question: What should happen to over 12 million undocumented people in the U.S. Giuliani said that the illegal immigration needs to stop first. He says we need a virtual and a real wall, a national id. Once we do that then people can get their ids, pay their taxes and if they can’t do that then they should get kicked out. Huckabee agreed with Giuliani on the border issue. Undocumented people need to go back to where they came from and begin the legal process, that is go to the back of the line.

Liveblogging the Univision Republican Debate

7:14 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Miami|Politics|TV · Comments Off

9 Dec 2007

foro_republicano3.jpgAnd we’re off, hopefully the simultaneous translation won’t throw me off like it did during the Democratic debate. I wonder how many English dominant people (Latino or not) are tuning in on CC3? I know that many gringos who watched the Univision Democratic debate and blogged it, kind of missed the main points. Mitt Romney, Giulianni, Ron Paul, and McCain have a huge fan club in the audience. Who is Duncan Hunter? I really know little about that guy.

First question: Why has there been a drop in Latino support of Republicans? There was a huge delay in getting the translation. Giulianni didn’t answer the question. Romney said Latinos have a string connection to Latinos since so many of us are in the military, so many of us are business people, and so many of us are people are faith. Huckabee said that Republicans obviously haven’t communicated well with Latinos. He focused on the disparities in education and health between Latinos and non-Latinos. McCain basically said that Latinos were anti-abortion, religious, and pro-military. Not this Latina. McCain also said that just because of Republican immigration stance many Latinos have written off Republicans.

Liveblogging the Univision Republican Debate

6:44 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Activism|Miami|TV · Comments Off

9 Dec 2007

foro_republicano3.jpgWe covered the Democrat version of the Univision debate and tonight almost all the Republicans take center stage at the University of Miami (Tom Tancredo said the debate, held in Spanish with the candidates answering in English, was an insult). What will likely be an insult will be the pandering the candidates will no doubt engage in. I can’t wait to hear how they handle the immigration issue as well es education, and health care.

The debate begins at 7 pm (est) and can be seen on your local Univision channel (no where else because that’s how Univision rolls).

Daniel Rene : Por Ti, Para Ti and with VivirLatino

10:07 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Miami|Music · Comments Off

7 Dec 2007

Adicto_cover_FINAL.jpg25 year old Cubano- Americano Daniel Rene has lot going for him right now. He’s been singing for years, first with MDO, an incarnation of the Menudo franchise and now he’s released his second solo album Adicto. He writes songs, so well apparently that one song he helped write was nominated for a Grammy. And his beautiful face (he reminds me of a hot Cuban ex I once had) and acting skills are on the Telemundo novela Pecados Ajenos. Daniel Rene was gracious enough to take some time out of his busy promo schedule to talk to la Mala about what he’s an adicto of, why he sings in Spanish, and strip clubs. Yes, strip clubs. Check out after the jump for notes from my interview and a video of Daniel Rene for the song off his album, Por Ti, Para Ti.

070902_democratas_3.jpgTonight’s historic Spanish language presidential candidate forum sponsored by Univision, shown on Univision, and conducted by Univision news people, presented some dead on target questions but did it help Latino voters decide who they should choose? As an educated Latina voter, the forum helped solidify some of the nuanced differences between those running but it sure didn’t make me want to run to the polls.

Primero, I have to call Univision out on their almost dictatorial control they need to have on events they sponsor. Why weren’t other Latino journalists from outside the Univision school invited to question candidates? Why weren’t Latino bloggers and other new media invited to participate the way bloggers participated in the Democratic All American Forum and will participate in the Republican All American Forum? I think Univision missed the ball here in reaching young Latino voters.

Fat Joe is a Big Fat Diva

2:47 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Chismes|Miami · 1 Comment

17 Aug 2007

fatjoeozone.jpgAt least according to Stereohyped he is.

There is nothing more mystifying than when a rapper like Fat Joe plays the diva card and brings an entourage of 30 people to a less-than-top-tier awards show like the Ozone Awards, and then insists that the red carpet be shut down while he makes his way down it.
