As I wrote yesterday, the actions and voices against Secure Communities grow louder. Today there are at least six actions planned targeting President Obama and the Democratic Party as the continue to lie and pass the blame onto the Republicans while pushing over a million deportations. Some organizations are calling today a National Day of Action Against Secure Communities. See if you can find and event near you and stay tuned for reports from the protests as they come in.

An electronic traffic sign on Miami’s State Road 826, Palmetto Expressway, was hacked to flash an anti-Latino message
. The sign read “No Latinos” and “No Tacos.” The message on the password protected signs that are usually used to announce construction, is being blamed on hackers.

For those who think this isn’t a big deal, I want to remind everyone that today Jeffery Conroy, convicted for killing Marcelo Lucero, is being sentenced today.

artcutiewltvIf there is a way to fuck things up, the Catholic Church will find it.

I’m not sure why the Catholic Church seems to think that their priests engaging in sexual intercourse is so horrible a thought it needs to be banned. The Church is getting desperate for new young folks to fill the ranks of the old men who made the mess the Church is in today, even as it steadily dismisses those new young folks in favor of upholding antiquated laws that really hold no meaning at all. From CNN:

Cutie (pronounced koo-tee-AY) will pursue the priesthood in the Episcopal Church, the Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida said in a written statement.

It was not immediately clear how long the process would take.

Cutie is sometimes called “Father Oprah” because of the advice he’s given in Spanish-language media.

He shocked the Catholic community when photographs of him embracing a bathing-suit-clad woman emerged this month.

Cutie admitted having a two-year relationship with the woman.

She has not been publicly identified.

I’m no big fan of priests or of the Catholic Church, but this guy seems to be genuine and real. He seems to be in a committed relationship with one woman who is fully grown and fully consenting. An oddity for far to many priests in the Catholic Church.

Tell me again why *he* is leaving the church and not the pedophile that’s been moved from church to church for 40 years?

The headline says it all, and it really can’t get much better than this, folks. AP reports on the “little” incident:

Merengue star Elvis Crespo is being investigated after a woman said she saw him masturbating on an airplane en route from Houston to Miami.

According to a Miami-Dade County police report, the Grammy winner was doing it in view of other passengers on a flight last week. That prompted the plane’s captain to radio Miami International Airport.

Officers interviewed the Puerto Rican singer upon his arrival but did not arrest him. No charges have been filed, but an investigation continues.

When asked by police about the incident, Crespo said: “I don’t recall doing that.”

His publicist did not immediately return a message left Wednesday by The Associated Press.

You can’t blame Elvis. Pobrecito can’t get press to save his life, so he had no other choice than to resort to touching himself on a plane. And getting interrogated by the FBI? Priceless.

innocent-victimsOn Thursday night the Chilean National News was reporting that two students from Chile had been shot and killed, and three others wounded. I was watching the Chilean news with my Chilean ex and right away my mouth said what my gut felt. Was this another hate crime?

Turns out that the deaths of Nicolas Pablo Corp-Torres age 23 and Racine Balbontin-Aragondona, age 22, and the critical wounding of three — Fransisco Javier Cofre-Fernande, age 25, in critical condition; Sebastian Mauricio Arizaga-Suarez, age 27 and David Alonzo Bilbao-Meza, age 21, was motivated by hatred of immigrants.

The accused killer, Dannie Roy Baker, is a self-proclaimed minister who apparently was moved by Republican hate speech against immigrants (read Latinos).

Neighbor Crystal Lynn says “he did come up to me one time and asked me if I was ready for the revolution to begin and if I had any immigrant in my house to get them out.

While some are questioning the sanity of Baker, what is clear is that he was sane enough to use hatred towards immigrants as an excuse for his disgusting crime. In a country that despite it’s new president, is still conducting raids on working immigrants, regardless of status, it’s no wonder that crazy or not, scapegoating the economic troubles of the U.S. on immigrants (read Latinos) is acceptable. Just read some of the comments on other sites responding to the crime (hate comments will be deleted here).

Askalatino

Dear Urban Jibaro,

I work in the toy department of a major retailer in a pretty diverse part of Pennsylvania. I see a lot of Latino families and I am curious about something. Whenever a kid throw a tantrum in my department, I hear their mothers threaten them with “John Kletter” and they immediately start behaving in most cases.

I have 3 kids myself and I would love to know how John Kletter can help me when they act up.

My question is “Who is John Kletter, and why are Latino children so afraid of him?

“Gracias” (thats all the Spanish I know)

Misty (Lancaster PA)

***************************************************

Ok…so being that fact that I am completely new at this, I honestly did not know what the hell Misty was talking about. I googled “John Kletter” and did not find much…and was about to move on to our next submission…that is until I mentioned the question to one of my friends (she made me swear not to reveal her name) who has a thick accent and she said “que eso de jon kleta?”and then it hit me me like a ton of bricks…we had a phonetic translation issue here….John Kletter doesn’t exist…at least not in the Latino universe what Misty actually witnessed was the power of the almighty “CHANCLETA”.

This whole ASK A LATINO thing is gonna be fun…

So now that we got that squared away…Click below to read my official response to the first “ASK A LATINO” question.

pitbull.jpgNo, this isn’t something you’d see on Animal Planet, rapper Pitbull (a.k.a. name Armando Perez) has been arrested for driving under the influence. We hate to follow one DUI story with another, but we guess it’s just that time of year. Reports TMZ:

According to the police report obtained by TMZ, Perez was stopped after flying past a marked cop car in his silver Mercedes, doing 93 mph in a 55 zone. At first, the rapper wouldn’t get out of the car, and when he did, the officer writes that he “could detect a strong breath odor of alcohol over the gum he was chewing,” that Pitbull’s speech was rapid and slurred and his eyes were bloodshot.

Results of the sobriety test weren’t pretty either: he couldn’t do the finger-to-nose touch, he was swaying, and basically mangled the “walk and turn” portion of the test, losing his balance, stepping off line and starting without being told to do so.

TMZ also claims that Pitbull allegedly yelled repeatedly to officers “This is a big waist [sic] of time your time papo.”

The rapper was then booked and his bail was set at a modest $1000.

Check out TMZ for the arrest report, video (including Pitbull laughing off the incident) and more developments on this story.

Ever wake up a morning after and say to yourself, ” Why the hell did I do that last night?”. That’s what I’m saying to myself this morning after having wasted an hour and a half of my precious life on the Univision Republican debate. Why a waste? Well besides the fact that nothing surprising was said (ok I was a bit surprised at the blatant homophobia). I went into the debate waiting for the obvious racist moment when it hit me. Duh, they know we’re (Latinos) are listening. So in between telling undocumented people to go home they threw in God, compassion, and love. What Latino is going to say no to God, compassion, and love. Hearing all the anti-Chavez, Castro rhetoric, reminded me, that even though the Republicans (minus one) knew we were listening, they also tailored their answers for the Cuban exile community not for me or my kind of Latino. And it seems that much of the Spanish language media didn’t pay the debate any mind, at least not in NYC, where the newspaper front pages are more about our day to day reality, like some kids in Washington Heights who were brutalized by police.

I was also surprised by the constant reference to El Salvador and President Reagan’s intervention there, as if that was the foreign policy model to follow. Were they suggesting that the U.S. should fund opposition parties in Latin America. That the U.S. should support death squads? Oh wait. I think they do that already.

Most Latinos were like my partner, who went into the other room to watch the Mexican soccer final, while I listened to nothing new being said by Republicans, no matter how it was translated.

Liveblogging the Univision Republican Debate

foro_republicano3.jpgOn to Latin America, everyone in the audience clapped upon mention of the failure of Hugo Chavez’s constitutional reform.
How would you deal with Chavez? Ron Paul was booed when he said that he would talk with Chavez. He said we created the Chavez’s and Castro’s of the world by butting into their affairs. Mitt Romney said that Chavez is no friend of the U.S. but that Chavez isn’t the people of Venezuela and vice-versa. Giuliani agreed with Mitt Romney. Giuliani said that Chavez is acting like a dictator and should be treated as one.
