Earlier this week, VivirLatino published a letter from an Indigenous community in Colombia to President Elect Obama.
One point that we, and other blogfriends have been trying to make ever since the start of the very long road to the White House, was that the way race and racial politics are talked about and analyzed needs to change. There was a clear reason why being Black and Latino was viewed as two mutually exclusive realms of being. One Afro Colombiano writes about his own hopes, expectations and thoughts post the Obama win.
Aiden Salgado writes:
I believe that the triumph of this African American man needs to be looked at very carefully because there is a risk of falling into Obama-itis and into thinking that Obama is superman and that he can solve all of our problems overnight. Ladies and Gentlemen, if Obama has any urgent task, it is to sweep up the mess that Bush has left throughout the world. In order to do so, he can start with the war in Iraq, with supporting a peace process in the Middle East that doesn’t involve backing the aggressions of Israel against their neighbors, and he should pull the U.S. government’s unconditional support for policies of the Colombian government and President Álvaro Uribe Vélez which have been violating human rights.
Related is a series of posts up at The Unapologetic Mexican, featuring the words of African-Americans, specifically their perspectives on Obama. Today’s featured post is from an Afro-Latino educator and blogger Jose Vilson. Jose writes:
My biggest reason for voting came in the form of 30 or so students in a classroom in Washington Heights of New York City. All of them are considered English language learners, all of Latin@ descent, and all from immigrant populations. Their engagement in this political race has surprised and inspired me. Their worst and best ideas about politics comes to the fore, and while some of the ideas are certainly prejudice (”White people vote for McCain” won’t stand the test of time), I also see a great opportunity to help develop better-informed citizens and participants in a still-exclusive fraternity.

It is more than a fashion statement. The decision to wear red today is to yes, to bring attention to the self, specifically to the struggles of women of color against violence.
Red is a powerful color in the negative and positive sense of the word. Last year, people all over the world wore the color red in what is now a campaign and a movement against violence against women of color. Red the color of of righteous anger, the color of blood that is spilled and blood that boils at what has become so commonplace for so many women is silenced.
This year, on the first anniversary of the Be Bold Be Red Campaign, we invite you to make your bold stance against the violence enacted on women and girls of color in our society visible. In D.C., Chicago, Durham, Atlanta and Detroit women of color will be gathering to renew our commitment to creating a world free from racialized and gendered violence, and this time, we’ll be using a new technology called CyberQuilting to connect all of these gatherings in real time. Need someone to blame for the economic downturn, for the mortgage crisis? Look no farther than Maria y Jose. That’s right it’s those damn illegal immigrants (or some would have you believe). After all they control the money and the system that controls that. No? DreamActivist writes over at The Sanctuary:
Why, don’t you know, those migrant workers, low-income wage-earners, illegals in the military, undocumented students struggling to afford college, caused the financial collapse of Wall Street, Main Street, all streets!! Now we need a $700 billion dollar bailout for them!

It started with the ambitions of a single illegal alien.
That’s right. I said it. We have no time for political correctness now. If Sen. McCain can suspend his campaign, I can suspend my intelligence to state things plainly. And plainly, my investment banker siblings, it always starts with one.
And we ignored the signs, even when it appeared in the news way back when the Mexicans first began ousting CEOs.

Denver, it’s thin air, the madness of running from one place to the other as a credentialed bloggers, being misquoted. Pero it was only four weeks and a few days ago. While much has happened since then in terms of the presidential race, what’s the saying? The more things change the more they stay the same.
Check out the DNC aventura, Beer (Veneer?) and Loathing : The Pollatix of Grain and Periphery, from the lens of the talented Nezua aka The Unapologetic Mexican. It made me weep, pero that’s probably because I was there and because Nezua really captured everything that was going on so perfectly.

The Cheat Sheet to the $700 billion Dollar Nightmare of a Plan

economic downward spiral. I do know that anyone asking for a $700 billion blank check isn’t a good thing, and it’s even worse when it’s the government that wants it. Gracias a Liza over at Culture Kitchen, we have a little better explanation as to what is so wrong about what my former boss, Paulson, wants.
* Would allow up to $700 billion in mortgage assets to be held by Treasury at any one time.
* Allows the Treasury to buy any mortgage-related assets, both residential and commercial, for a two-year period. The plan does not detail the types of mortgage assets this could cover and or how long the government could hold them, and does not establish how they would be valued. However, if deemed needed to promote financial market stability, any type of financial instrument could be bought.
* Assets must have been originated or issued before September 17, 2008, by a financial institution having “significant operations” in the United States. This provision could also be waived if deemed needed to promote financial stability.
* Assets could be bought from any financial institution, including but not limited to banks, thrifts, credit unions, broker-dealers and insurance companies. If deemed need(sic) to promote financial stability, however, assets could be purchased from non-financial companies.
* Grants the Treasury broad authority to decide how to purchase, manage and dispose of the assets, including setting up a special fund and naming financial institutions to work for the Treasury Department.
* The Treasury secretary would be given these powers to ensure stability or prevent disruption of financial markets and to protect the taxpayer.
* No court or government agency could review the secretary’s decisions. The secretary would report to Congress within the first three months and then twice yearly.
* The U.S. debt limit would be increased by $700 billion to fund the plan, to $11.315 trillion from $10.615 trillion.
