The U.S. Census says it is depending on us. Nearly 60 million Americans (I think they mean people in the U.S.) rely on us for information. Who are we? We are ethnic media.
It’s hard to get one definition of what ethnic media is. One article states that it’s media, including TV, radio, newspapers, and Web sites that is often broadcasted or published in another language. Ethnic media can include huge corporate media sources like Univision and small independent sources like um lets say The Sanctuary.

9 Jun 2009Last month I wrote about how Peruvian Quechua Congresswoman Hilaria Supa was under attack in Peru, with her Indigenous identity being attacked as a deficiency in her work.
Carlos in DC, who generally dislikes me and VivirLatino for claiming Latino identity, had the opportunity to interview Supa when she was here in NYC speaking at the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. In the three part interview Carlos asks Supa about Indigenous identity, the value of the Coca leaf, and the attacks on her from the mainstream Peruvian press.
You can see the entire three part interview here.

11 May 2009A belated Happy Mother’s Day to all who observed yesterday. The VL team has lots of mami power and yesterday as I spent the day cleaning, working, and yes visiting my own Mami and Titi, I was thinking about Latina mami’hood, the trabajo of raising our children and the lessons in love, struggle, and justice that we learn and impart on our young ones.
In Chile, for example, three Mexican mothers recently testified about the deaths of their daughters. These deaths represent just a tiny fraction of the hundreds of deaths and disappearances of mujeres in Ciudad Juarez.
Between 1993 and 2008 there were 447 registered cases of femicides in and around Juárez that are marked by signs of rape and extreme torture. Apart from the 447 registered cases, there are an estimated 70 young women still missing.
The State of México is accused for failing to confront the femicide phenomenon and in so doing, violating the right to life of its victims. Although only three mothers of the victims came to testify in Santiago, the court signaled that the three cases represent all of the femicides that have taken place in México to date.
The three mothers of the murdered women who testified were Irma Monreal, mother of Esmeralda Herrera, 14, Josefina González, mother of Claudia Ivette Conzález Banda, 20, and Benita Monárrez, mother of Laura Berenice Remos Monárrez, 17. On Tuesday, April 28, the mother’s gave their stories.
Their daughters were found dead in October 2001 along with the bodies of five other women and girls in a zone known as “Campo Algondonero” in Juarez.
The women had been tortured, raped and mutilated.
“I have faith and trust in the judges of this court,” said Monárrez. “I have faith that we will find justice.”
Instead of receiving flowers on Mother’s Day, these mothers are putting flowers on their daughter’s graves.
Speaking of flowers…….

Hoy, the Editors of The Sanctuary released a statement on how the spreading Swine Flu is being used by anti-immigrant forces to spread another type of illness, hate.
The moment that the news of the “Swine Flu” or “North American Influenza” hit the wires, it was easy to predict what the anti-immigrant faction would have to say about it. People like Michael Savage, Neil Boortz, Michelle Malkin, Glenn Beck, Pat Buchanan, and groups like CIS, FAIR, and NumbersUSA are so locked into their views that their voices are unnecessary in a dialogue that actually preferences truth—which by nature requires flexibility and bravery. The stances of those who most vocally oppose immigration today are so predictable that one could paint a face on a septic-tainted soccer ball and paste up word balloons and rest well, knowing that The Nativist Lobby point of view on any immigration-related topic will end in “deport them all” and “seal the borders” if not “round them up” and other tired ideas. …
You know you want to read more, especially the part of how none of this scapegoating is new. Read the whole cosita at The Sanctuary.
You can tweet it too!!!

22 Apr 2009There seems to be no end to the continuing saga of Miss California vs. blogger Perez Hilton. In less than 48 hours, la Miss appears to have turned herself into a bible thumping representative of the religious right and Hilton appears to getting angrier rather than cooling off.
In the above clip, watch Miss California give her side of the story, and MSNBC manipulate the facts.

21 Apr 2009Latino blogger Perez Hilton joined Larry King last night to break down the reason why he asked Miss USA contestant, Miss California, the “fatal question”. In this clip, Perez says he didn’t mean for the question to be a “bomb” and that he could tell by the look on Miss Cali’s face that she knew she was going to lose her shot at the title because of her answer.
Hilton also alleges that television had a hand at editing out the “loud boos” that Miss California received upon stating her opposition to gay marriage.
What do you think about Perez’s stance? Is his analysis fair? Does he defend his point well?

20 Apr 2009This idiot is representing my state in the world’s most irrelevant television event? At least fellow Latino blogger Perez Hilton tries to make this moronic and antiquated pageant somewhat relevant, but look at the response he was awarded for his good intentions. Note as well the applause she got. Not surprising when you consider who might be attending such a shitshow.
Oh, and she didn’t win.

14 Mar 2009Mala is a little stressed out and seeking calm from the internet isn’t really helping.
I mean, mira, scary socialist Chavez is taking over everything, including highways, ports and airports.
It’s not like the U.S. to interfere in the elections of Latin American countries like El Salvador, right?
We could all just unwind in Mexico.
If we wanna a wax we’d have to skip Jersey.
We can’t even wash our kids anymore
Pero thankfully when all else fails, we have Jon Stewart.
