Jlopeople.jpgYou, our own VivirLatino readers, voted Shakira as the most Influential Latina of 2006. The magazine, People en Español, begs to differ. They have chosen Jenny from the block aka Ms. Jennifer Lopez as their Most Influential Hispanic.

Some of the other Latinos featured in the revista include Shakira, Chilean writer Isabel Allende, Fidel Castro, Carlos Slim Helú, Don Francisco, and Oscar de la Hoya. The issue is on newstands now.

539571_tn.jpgShe’s a crazy like a fox and no Marilyn Monroe, but that didn’t stop the Mexican edition of Playboy magazine from signing up Cuban B-lister Niurka Marcos to be its next covergirl. I guess it’s more about scandal that aesthetics here:

Moments after signing a contracat with the publishers of the magazie, Niurka said that she had not accepted the offer previously out of respect for her ex boyfriends, Juan Osorio y Bobby Larios, but that now that she enjoys her freedom, she makes decisions on her own.

Niurka, always the deep thinker, also says that being single has shown her another side of herself:

She added that now that she doesn’t have a partner “I have done marvelous things, I have recognized myself, I have identified with myself and I have discovered the talents that I have.”

Oh, and what talents! Niurka is also preparing for the release of her new book, written by her — not a ghostwriter — in which she tells of her humble beginnings in Cuba and her rise to fame in Mexico.

60538735-523E-4385-B1A8-2E0167167467.jpgThe Advocate, the most widely read gay magazine, has revealed that Lost‘s Latina cast member, Michelle Rodriguez has been bitten by the love bug. In an interview with her co-star in BloodRayne(and apparent partner) Kristanna Loken , we get the scoop:

As we sat downstairs in her Los Angeles home, upcoming Advocate cover girl Kristanna Loken—the smoldering star of Terminator 3—found an adorable way of letting us know that she’s involved with her equally sexy BloodRayne costar Michelle Rodriguez. At first Loken, 27—who has a recurring role as lover of Shane (Katherine Moennig) on Showtime’s The L Word this season—affirmed that she’s in a relationship but wouldn’t specify the name or gender.

Then we mentioned the tantalizing stories Loken has told in past interviews about getting tight with Rodriguez when they filmed BloodRayne in Romania. Here’s what happened next.

What about all the stuff that was said about you and Michelle on the shoot?
[Laughs, then takes a deep breath] There is the $64,000 question. Um…I don’t even know how to answer that.

It seems like you both had a lot of fun partying.
Uh-huh. [Smiles, doesn’t say anything]

OK, your silence says volumes.
[Both laugh]
Just don’t look upstairs, OK?

Ooh, OK. You don’t want me to print that?

You can print it. [Laughs again] The very hot housekeeper. No, just joking.

Hmm…hopefully having a gf will help keep Michelle out of jail.

SaraRamirez.jpgBefore Sara Ramirez became orthopedic surgeon Dr. Callie Torres on Grey’s Anatomy she asked the same question other Latino viewers were:

As a Latin person, I was really proud to see the ethnic people on the show. I thought, Wow, there are no color limits. Nobody’s making comments about how there are African-Americans on the show and an Asian on the show. However, I did think, Where’s the Latin person?

Well now she is the Latin person and doing a great job at it. This Latina with an extensive Broadway background is featured in an interview in this week New York Magazine. A large part of the focus of the interview is her weight (or rather people’s perception of it).

Online Latino Magazines Are Hot

1:11 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Internet|Magazines · 2 Comments

betterwords-340-Latinaoct.jpgWhile the digital divide between Latinos and whites may be growing, online Latino themed magazines are growing fast, among them Latina and People en Espanol.

Latina Media Ventures, publisher of English-language women’s monthly Latina, relaunched Latina.com in March 2006 and predicts that the site’s online advertising, estimated at $150,000 in 2005, will grow to close to $1 million this year.

This growth is explained by some by the fact that there are not as many Latino themed sites on the net as general sites.

I’m no believer in trickle down economics but I wonder if these numbers and $$$ will trickle down to VL or if it’s matter of fluffy, non-controversial topics interesting more people and attracting more $$$?

Magazines say little about Latinos

1:02 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Magazines|Media · Comments Off

14 Jun 2006

b4685683.jpgLast weekend I noticed that there were no less than 12 Latino-related stories in the New York Times‘ Sunday edition — from the Style section, to the Week in Review to just about every part of the paper. Not so the case with weekly news magazines, according to a study by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists:

A study commissioned by a Hispanic journalists’ association has found that the three main newsweekly magazines ran very few stories about Hispanics last year despite the growing importance of the Latino population.

The five-month study, due to be released Wednesday, found that only 18, or 1.2 percent, of the 1,547 stories that appeared last year in Time, Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report were predominantly about Latinos.

1031_sex_after_kids_01.jpgIf you’re a regular VL reader you’ll know that we cite Spain’s 20 Minutos newspaper a lot. I think it’s funny how they tend to have the weirdest stories, yet position them as “hard news”. Today is no exception. The headline:

International Sex Study: Spaniards — the longest-lasting and most imaginative, but we do it less frequently.

Hee. Can you tell this is a newspaper they hand out for free at subway stations?

According to the “international study” (which is actually just a survey done by Men’s Health magazine — a PR tactic as it were — in which the data is based on respondents’ answers), Spaniards and Mexicans rank high in sexual prowess. Some highlights:

According to the study, we Spaniards are outstanding at prolonging the length of the sexual act, since our average is 22.3 minutes, the third best after Mexicans and the Dutch who last 22.5 minutes.

We are also third in the world in the variety of positions we put into practice in lovemaking, with 4.63, beaten only by the Hungarians, who confess that they change positions 8,27 times, and by Argentines, who try 5.76 positions.

Again, if you ask someone these questions, what are they going to say? I think all this shows is that it’s clear that Spain had a hand in the creation of the Mexican “macho”.

Latinas Are Hot

12:23 pm By Maegan La Mala · Celebrities|Magazines · 1 Comment

17 May 2006

longoria.eva.jpgNo entiendo why everyone is so surprised when a Latina makes it on the Hot 100 list of the numerous men’s magazines out on the market. Doesn’t everyone realize we’re hot? Regardless, Maxim released it’s Seventh Annual “Hot 100″ list with Desperate Housewife Eva Longoria at #1 for a record breaking second year in a row. Other Latinas making the top 10 include Jessica Alba at #2 and Cameron Diaz at #7. Now if only the mass media would pay attention to Latinas on other Hot 100 lists.

28_liv_jlo_photo_04-28-2006_V16GV5C.jpgJLo graces the cover of this year’s People en Español 50 Most Beautiful People issue, which hits newsstands this coming Monday. In the issue, JLo reveals:

“I’ve never tried to hide the fact that I’m Latina,” the Bronx-native tells the magazine. “I think that’s why Hispanics are like ‘she’s ours … she belongs to us.’ And that’s true; with the Latino community, I am theirs, I do belong to them.”

Jenny’s still from the block, big whoop. The more interesting chisme is that she might get her own reality show on MTV:

Singer/actress Jennifer Lopez is reportedly in talks with MTV brass to develop a weekly reality show, which will specifically revolve around her own life.

The show is supposed to be a close reflection of Lopez’s life, and will focus on various facets of her life including helping dancers who are trying to make it big in the industry.

The producers are still working on the exact theme of the show, but sources reveal that the groundwork is on in full swing.
