080318_Pokemon_dl-vertical.jpgIt’s been quite a few years since I’ve lived in Chile, but thanks to my Chilean partner, my half Chilean children, and DirectTV, I keep up with Chilean culture which is why I was kind of pissed off by Newsweek‘s one dimensional interpretation of urban youth identity in Chile summed up by the Pokemones vs. the Pelolais.

According to the Newsweek article, Pokemones are all about looks, sex, and materialism and nothing of substance. They are, according to the article the new urban tribe taking advantage of a good Chilean economy with no political inclination at all.

Absent from the article, and corrected by one commenter, is the fact that the majority of Pokemones (so named, correct me if I’m wrong) not for the cartoon characters per se but because like the Pokemon characters, they are many. There is power in being part of a group and every group has an ideological enemy. In the case of the Pokemones, that enemy would be the pelolais.

image002.jpgI was purposely and unusually quiet regarding the March issue of Latina magazine featuring controversial Latina (or not) actress Jessica Alba. I, along with many, was disturbed by her comments targeted at Latinas in general and Mexicans specifically. The cover story, gave Alba a chance to explain herself. Read the article for yourself to decide if you buy her explanation. Here’s a snippet:

“No one gives Cameron Diaz a hard time for not speaking Spanish,” says Alba. “Her dad’s Cuban, and I was telling her I feel so bad because everyone is so nasty to me for not speaking Spanish. She’s like, ‘I don’t speak Spanish! I barely speak English!’,” says the pregnant star with a laugh.

Ricky Martin is People en Español’s Most Influential Cover Boy

9:28 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Magazines|Music · Comments Off

29 Feb 2008

image001.jpgPeople en Español has declared Ricky Martin one of the most influential people on the cover of their latest edition. In making their selection, the magazine cites the success of Martin’s acclaimed
MTV Unplugged Album, his “Sold-Out” Black & White Tour, induction into The Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the legendary singer’s ongoing charitable work on behalf of children through the Ricky Martin Foundation.

We couldn’t agree more.

Naomi Campbell : The Newest Reporter in Latin America?

11:14 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Cuba|Fashion|Magazines|Politics · Comments Off

27 Dec 2007

naomi_campbell_061907_04-thumb.jpgSo much for supermodel Naomi Campbell not being political. After visiting Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, seems the lefty Latin American bug has bit her (that or the hair iron has fried her brain). She is allegedly in Cuba as I write this, interviewing President Fidel Castro for the UK version of GQ. Rumor has it that she is also planning on going back to Venezuela to do an official interview with Hugo Chavez.

Alberto Gonzales : Lawyer of the Year (No, I’m Not Kidding)

9:56 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Justice|Magazines|Politics · Comments Off

13 Dec 2007

gonzales.jpgThere’s a reason there are so many lawyer jokes. Well here’s another one: Who is the American Bar Association’s Journal Lawyer of the Year? Alberto Gonzales! It wasn’t bad enough that earlier this year CNN held up the pro-torture, anti-human rights former Attorney General as a Latino to admire.

The monthly magazine gave the awards to lawyers who made the most news, said editor and publisher Edward A. Adams.
“Think about Time magazine’s Person of the Year,” Adams said in an interview. “In years past they’ve named people like Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin. So we’re not suggesting by these awards that these are the best lawyers in any sense of the word. We are saying they are the most newsworthy — and perhaps also the best.”

Well that’s a relief, I think.

blogging.jpgAn article I read today over at Colorlines nearly knocked me off my seat in front of my computer but upon reflection it makes a hell of alot of sense. Daisy Hernandez starts her piece with a shocking statement (to me anyway):

I don’t read blogs.
It feels like something I should whisper to a priest in a confessional booth. I could make the sign of the cross and blurt out: “I don’t watch television. I’ve only been on YouTube once. I don’t own a cell phone that has…a keyboard.”

As a person who spends a good part of her life blogging, looking for things to blog, and reading things that other people blog this is a hard concept for me to fathom but then Daisy reminds us that:

Just because people aren’t iChatting doesn’t mean that information’s not moving in our communities.

Jenny la Bella

10:26 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Magazines · Comments Off

1 Aug 2007

jenny.jpgPeople en Español’s September issue contains their best dressed list and on the top of it is Jennifer López, reclaiming the place she once held in 2003. But the ghosts of her hubby, Marc Anthony’s past follow J. Lo. everywhere with his ex, 1993 Miss Universe Dayanara Torres coming in third place. Mexican actress and singer Lucero came in at number 8. Cameron Diaz, Penélope Cruz and Ugly Betty América Ferrara also are listed. There is also some dulce masculino with Gael García Bernal being featured for his “look bohemio” and Ricky Martin being hailed for his modern elegance. The Rican duo Calle 13 is featured for their “best personal style”.

But um can someone please explain why oh why the had to stick Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in there?

Salma is Forbes’ Sexiest Woman

11:07 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Magazines|Women · Comments Off

17 Jul 2007

salma.jpgI’m not sure when it was that Forbes went from rating rich CEOs to Hollywood bombshells, but last week they released a list of Hollywood’s Sexiest Women. According to them — and they should know (?) — Salma Hayek is the sexiest woman in show business.

After Salma at #1, the list gets a bit debatable. Carmen Electra and Jessica Alba tie for number two. Then the list goes on:

4. Shakira

5. Beyonce/Halle Berry/Eva Longoria (tie)

8. Catherine Zeta Jones

9. Elizabeth Hurley/Raquel Welch/Jessica Biel (tie)

12. JLo/Alyssa Milano (tie)

14. Pamela Anderson/Angelina Jolie (tie)

Is it just me or does this list seem like it’s from 2001? Pamela Anderson is tied with Angelina Jolie? Elizabeth Hurley tied with Jessica Biel? I guess that’s what you get when you have a business magazine do fluff pieces. Just weird.

3443438_10.jpgJLo and Marc Anthony seem to be in the news a lot lately. Jen’s being accused of spouting Scientology, Marc’s being tailed by the tax man, and Jen’s got a new novela about her love life on tap for Spanish language television. Now, news that Marc and Jen are suing infamous gossip rag The National Enquirer in a European court for alleging that they were linked to drugs:

Paul Tweed, who specializes in bringing U.S.-based celebrities’ libel cases to British and Irish courts, told The Associated Press that actress-singer Lopez, 38, and singer Anthony, 37, were seeking “a six-figure settlement” from the Enquirer, based in Boca Raton, Fla., and its parent company, American Media Inc.

Tweed said the lawsuit would be filed Tuesday in a Belfast court, and in subsequent days in courts in Dublin, London and Paris.

Say Hola to Miguelito

12:23 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Chismes|Magazines · Comments Off

21 Mar 2007

luismi_bebe_3.jpgIt’s time to meet the baby Suri of the Latino world. After months of wondering if Luis Miguel and Aracely Arambula really had a baby (since the family is so elusive), the first images of baby Miguelito have appeared in the Mexican edition of Hola! magazine. You’ll remember this is the same magazine that got exclusive rights to show off Aracely’s big belly.

And just how much did the rag, I mean mag have to shell out to feature the first familia of Mexican pop? According to some sources just 3 million dollars. Like the couple needs that money. Now if I were to ask for a few million for picture rights to my equally (if not more so) cute baby, I would be accuses of pimping my baby. Just goes to show you how celebs roll.
