jimenez.jpgYesterday I reported on how the wife of missing Iraq soldier, Alex Jimenez, faced deportation. I a pleased to report today that late yesterday a U.S. Homeland Security Department spokeswoman said that Yaderlin Jimenez did not face deportation, that her case was closed and would remain so.

beach1.jpgWho would think that the Dominican Republic has a problem with poverty, what with the star-studded festivities around the launch of a billion-dollar yacht marina in the eastern part of the country this past weekend:

Children of US billionaire Donald Trump, the singer Julio Iglesias and fashion designer Oscar de la Renta were among the stars who gathered Saturday in the Dominican Republic’s Cap Cana to inaugurate a luxury marina, organizers said.

Touted as the “most complete and modern marina in the Caribbean,” organizers said in a statement that the facility will, once finished, be able to accommodate 1,000 yachts as well as mega-yachts.

One Mother’s Wish

8:55 am By Maegan La Mala · Activism|Dominicans|New York City|Women · Comments Off

12 May 2006

manny.jpgAltagracia Mayi, a Dominican immigrant, has had the same mother’s day wish since 1991, justice for her son Manny. 15 years ago, on March 29, 1991, Manny Mayi Jr., a Queens College honor student, was chased for 16 blocks and beaten to death by a gang of 10 white youths in his neighborhood of Corona, Queens, NYC. Not one of the attackers has been brought to justice despite numerous witness reports. There is also evidence that some of the attackers may have had mafia connections and after the attack were aided in leaving the country. The New York City Police Department refused to label the crime a hate crime despite a history of attacks on Latinos by whites in the racially mixed neighborhood. The police also claim that Manny was beaten up because he was engaged in writing graffiti in the neighborhood, although there has been no evidence to support this claim.

Dominican Sexuality caught on tape?

8:04 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Culture|Dominicans|sex · 4 Comments

10 Mar 2006

sexourbano.jpg I ran across a blog post talking very briefly about a documentary, produced by HBO, supposedly about the sex life of Dominicanos. The post said that it was a “montaje” (fake) and says (translation):

It’s not untrue that there is sexual frenzy in our society, but to me what is presented there seemed staged.

I watched the first part of the video, and I’m not sure what it says about Dominican sexuality (actually, I have some strong feelings about it with no relation to a culture — but I’ll keep those to myself for now), but apparently Dominican talk show host “Nuria” has a few things to say on her show tonight. We’ll stand by for her comments, but in the meantime, the Domincan Tourism secretary has something to add:

“The government’s secretary of tourism rejects the documentary presented by the American television network HBO which promotes the Dominican Republic as a sexual paradise, because the material is sensationalist and totally distorts the social and cultural reality of the Dominican people.”

I’m including a link to the video because I’d like to get our Dominicano readers’ take on what it says, if anything about your culture and your sexuality. Does it stereotype Dominican women? And to all readers: is it offensive?

Red, White y Azul

8:27 am By Maegan La Mala · Dominicans|Events|New York City · 1 Comment

27 Feb 2006

empirestate.JPG The tourists snapping pics of the red, white, and blue lit Empire State Building in New York City this weekend probably thought the color scheme had to do with good ole’ patriotism towards the USA. Well they were half right. The Empire State Building was lit this past weekend, February 24 through 26, in red, white and blue but to celebrate Dominican Independence Day and Dominican Heritage Month. The lights of the Empire State Building can
be seen from as far away as 80 miles. The lighting of the Dominican colors was made possible thanks to the support of the Empire State Building Co. LLC and the office of New York State Assemblyman Adriano
Espaillat. Felicidades Dominicanos!

DominicanHugo.jpg The first recorded birth of sextuplets in the Dominican Republic happened on December 27th of the year we just left behind. While the babies, whose mother had undergone fertility treatments to conceive, are struggling to survive, their papi has named one baby after someone that some would say is a source of struggle or a leader in the struggle (depending on who you ask). Emilio Figueroa, the father, said he admired Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez and his “revolución bolivariana” and named one of his newborns “Hugo” to prove it.

haitian_children_in_dom_republic.jpgI was appalled but fascinated by an article I read in last Sunday’s New York Times. It talked about the savage, racist treatment of Haitians on the part of the government entities (and the people) of the Dominican Republic. The treatment of immigrant laborers in the United States is appalling, but the condition of Haitian workers in the D.R. is downright sickening:

“Where there are two Haitians, kill one; where there are three Haitians, kill two,” said leaders of the mobs that descended on the immigrants’ camps, the Haitians here recalled. “But always let one go so that he can run back to his country and tell them what happened.”

Flight 587 Victims to be Honored

6:25 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Dominicans|New York City · Comments Off

21 Nov 2005

20458000.jpgThe victims of American Airlines Flight 587, which crashed in Queens in 2001 en route to the Dominican Republic, will be honored via a tribute to be created by a Dominican artist:

A Dominican-born visual artist has been selected to create a memorial for the victims of Flight 587 that crashed in the Rockaways on its way to the Carribbean nation four years ago, the mayor’s office said Wednesday.

Freddy Rodriguez’s proposal calls for a sloping granite wall with window-like openings and an entrance doorway that faces the same direction in which the plane had been heading for the Dominican Republic. He has said his design grew out of this concept of “here and there” and the universal longing to go home. The site on the beach at Beach 116th Street.

Garcia: Latino pride or Latino marketing?

5:41 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · California|Dominicans|Marketing|Sports · Comments Off

7 Nov 2005

32499.jpegThe Sacramento Kings are all giddy about the latest addition to their team. “We’ve finally got a Spanish speaker!”, they proclaim. Some California Latinos are fired up with cultural pride, and it seems the Kings have dollar signs in their eyes. The headline from the Sacramento Bee’s article on the matter seems to say the same thing: “García is Kings’ ticket into Latino market”.

What’s weird to me is that Garcia is a Dominican from New York. Not exactly the market anyone is trying to court out here in California. But then again, to marketers, if your name is Garcia it doesn’t matter if you are from Mexico or Minnesota.
