Earlier, when I wrote about President Obama’s immigration speech, I mentioned the arrests of five DREAM Activists in Indiana.

Erick, Omar, Lupe, Paola and Sayra were arrested yesterday in Gov. Daniels office in Indiana protesting two immigration laws that passed in the state legislature. Senate Bill 590 is similar to Arizona’s SB1070 and would make local police into de facto immigration agents. HB1402 forces undocumented Indiana students to pay out-of-state tuition rates – triple the cost of in-state rates in some cases. The protesters demanded a meeting with Daniels, a request he denied.

Now incarcerated, the Indiana Five started a hunger strike, refusing to be bonded out of jail, until the Governor vetoes HB1402 and SB590. The media is reporting that a spokesperson for Daniels says the governor is expected to sign the bills into law.

There is a petition you can sign urging Governor Daniels to veto Senate Bill 590 and House Bill 1402 immediately. The DREAMers are also requesting donations towards a bail fund.

07obama07_600.jpgThere were no big surprises coming out of yesterday’s Democratic primaries, held in North Carolina and Indiana. Barack Obama won North Carolina easily (by 14 percentage points), and Hillary Clinton just barely won Indiana. Many have attributed Hillary’s slight victory in Indiana to older voters who have been loyal to her, and Obama gaining votes from lower class white voters who have traditionally voted Clinton.

Obama’s clear victory in North Carolina, besides raising his delegate and popular vote count, also proved that the Rev. Wright drama hasn’t impacted his campaign as many thought it would.

The Face of Indiana Latinos

2:55 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Indiana|US Presidential Race 2008 · Comments Off

6 May 2008

indiana-hispanic-growth.gifAccording to a radio report on NPR yesterday, Latinos make up about five percent of the total population in Indiana. According to the same radio report, most of these Latinos are Mexican and Puerto Ricans.

In 2003, Latinos represented 4% of the population in Indiana (over 240,000). The three counties with the largest Latino population are Lake (61,400), Marion (41,400), and Elkhart (20,200).

Indiana ranks 21st among states for the size of its Latino population.

It is projected that the growth of the Latino population will increase by more than 15% between 2005 and 2015 and by more than 20% between 2015 and 2025.
