As you’re trudging through your last minute gift buying, please consider supporting Latin@ online businesses. My favorite is the Crafty Chica (Kathy Cano-Murillo), who I just discovered has her own Etsy shop! My favorites are these beautiful Chican@ themed ornaments. Que shiny and sparkly and pretty!
Tell us what Latin@ owned store you supported these holidays!

Ok, I’m totally kidding (I would never advocate the selling, buying, or distribution of drugs) but this picture that arrived in my inbox was way too good to pass up. Apparently there are three people licensed to sell the hallucinogenic cactus peyote in the United States and this guy is one of them.
In all seriousness, Peyote is a sacred plant, used, like many other plants, for religious ceremonies by many indigenous tribes in the Southwest region of what is now the U.S. In the U.S., the use of Peyote is protected but only as part of a religious ceremony (sorry druggies).

Ever since his breakthrough short story collection Drown came out almost 10 years ago everyone wondered what the Dominican writer Junot Diaz would do next. At long last we have an answer via The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. Released earlier this year with much fanfare, Diaz has become the Latino darling of the literary world, again. The tale of a Dominican geek who gets no play is linked to larger Dominican history. The book is making the must read list of critics and pop culture mags alike.
