Because apparently, there aren’t enough issues for young people in the world today to be passionate about and hit the streets over, at least one member of the Mexican pop group, RBD, that announced its breakup, is going down with a fight. Anahi wrote to her fans:
Quiero pedirle a todos los fans que por favor no nos dejen solos. Estoy bien loca, porque en el foro de la página oficial ya les dije que hagamos una marcha mundial y me regañaron, que por qué ando haciendo cosas así.

15 Aug 2008Maybe it’s the New Yorker in me, but I generally don’t like hugging strangers, especially strange gringo tourists but the Free Hug movement went to Ecuador and seem to be well received even if their background hugging it out theme music is questionable (as in I hate it).

Ay, the anti-immigrant forces. When they aren’t pissing us off with telling us to go back where we came from, they are always good for a laugh.
Any nativist will tell you that polls show 1,000% of ‘Mericans support speaking only English in the United States of America. It doesn’t matter if the U.S. can’t even understand the languages of the countries it goes to war with (you don’t need to understand people to shoot at them). If people can’t speak English like they’re supposed to, they’re not real ‘Mericans.
Using this iron-clad logic, I thought I’d compile a list of five English lessons for those that want to learn to how to be a real ‘Merican and speak English.”
To see the lessons go to The Sanctuary.

As my dear Mala knows, I have a thang for Salma Hayek. Which is why I was so pleased that Mala sent me a link to the following early career film work of Salma’s:
I’m not sure what I’m most intrigued by, Salma’s cute little red cape or the way she flounces out of the car. I do know I need to eat some burgerboy. Right now.

17 Jul 2008Do you ever watch hidden camera shows and chuckle as the victim discovers he or she’s been had? This one from Venezuela will either make you laugh or cry. Personally, my eyes were bugged out the whole time and couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
In addition to the reaction of the victim, one thing that isn’t to be missed is when she fears for her life, yet laments more the nail she broke (at 1:53).
What do you think? Did they go too far? I mean she was so scared the car drove off alone!

I asked my 10 year old daughter: “What language do they speak in Italy?”
She answers: “Italian”.
Now if only the U.S. lame duck President Bush knew that.
At the G8 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia two years ago, President Bush was caught in a candid moment on an open microphone, complaining that some of his fellow world leaders “talk too long.” Though the G8 summit was in Japan this year, the open microphones during lunch were still there. As the New York Times’s Sheryl Gay Stolberg reports, Bush had a bit of a language mishap when speaking to “one of his best buddies in Europe,” Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi:
“Amigo! Amigo!” Mr. Bush called out cheerily in Spanish when he spotted the Italian prime minister. “How you doing, Silvio? Good to see you!” Later, the president wondered about his former Russian counterpart, Vladimir V. Putin. “Did Putin come to see you since I saw you?” he asked Mr. Berlusconi. (He had not.)
Shout out to Matt Ortega for this.

23 Jun 2008Everyone’s favorite anti-immigrant spokesperson, CNN’s Lou Dobbs, has suggested that he may be interested in running for governor of the state of New Jersey. In response to this scary possibility, America’s Voice has created a website for the maybe candidate based on his racist views. From a press release on the launching of the site:
The site features our take on what a Lou Dobbs campaign platform would look like, inspired by the unrealistic and polarizing views of real Congressional candidates. Visitors are invited to submit their ideas (in English Only) for the Dobbs campaign slogan contest. The winner will receive a free t-shirt featuring their slogan, and activists around the country will have the opportunity to purchase the shirt online.Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice had this to say:
“America’s Voice is glad to take this opportunity to reveal the truth about anti-immigrant, mass-deportation candidates who have stood in the way of real immigration solutions for years.
Lou Dobbs is not a real candidate, he’s a caricature of what is wrong with the current immigration debate. He offers no real solutions to our broken immigration system, and simply uses his program to spread proven lies, stir up racial tensions and fear, and provide a platform to known hate groups.
The site is funny as all hell. Check it out.
Lou Dobbs for Governor
How did I miss this last night? I was so tired watching the coverage. Now if anyone asked to me my boo in that tone, I’d have to say no.
