JLo participated in Vanity Fair’s photo homage to classic Broadway musical made Hollywood classic movie West Side Story. Who was she? Well, Anita no less!
Posing for a glossy, starlet-studded photoshoot with Vanity Fair, Lopez admits, “I never wanted to be that wimpy Maria, who sits around pining for her guy. I wanted to be Anita, who danced her way to the top.” That’s because it’s almost how J.Lo’s career happened, except with more spray-tan and highlights.
Well put! I wonder what Rita Moreno would think. More importantly, what do you think?
Check out the whole series (featuring a ton of B-list actors) at Vanity Fair.

22 Feb 2009Well not actually to the Oscars, more like we’ll be on the sofa watching it along with the rest of you, and we can watch it together via twitter.
I and other tweeters will be looking at the Oscars though through a slightly political lens, as we look at the issues at who was nominated and who wasn’t and what Latinos are represented and how, plus mas claro and yes you can still say “damn that dress is ugly”.
Follow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/vivirlatino, many of you have already starting at 8pm EST (we don’t know if we’ll watch the red carpet).
In the meantime enjoy your Sunday.

21 Feb 2009While behind the scenes an entire team was frantically dealing with hackers and figuring out how to get VivirLatino back online, your truely was also engaging in a little fashion frivolity and networking gracias to Buzz Corps, HP and Vivienne Tam.
First on the agenda: A visit to Vivienne Tam’s boutique at 40 Mercer Street, NYC, on February 18, 2009, for a look at her Fall/Winter 2009 collection which revolved around the theme of an Exploration of Nothingness.
One of the reasons I was there is not cuz I’m such a fashionista. I was sent the HP Mini Vivienne Tam edition to review and this was all part of the marketing and promotional fun, porque carajo, especially when our site was down and we were pulling our hair out trying to get it up for you, the VL team needed some fun.
Ay pero lest you think that as I was having fun that I wasn’t paying attention to the multiple ironies around me, I’m working on a follow up that will go into the politics of this adventure porque you know mala, I make everything personal and professional political.
Salud!

Last week I wrote about the HP Mini Vivienne Tam Edition that HP had sent for me to play with.
Originally, I had gifts to give away for Valentine’s day, pero since we were under a not so loving attack that took us offline, let’s just call this VivirLatino’s post-Valentine’s Day/Fashion Week Giveaway.
This week in NYC is Fashion Week, and I will be at the Vivienne Tam boutique tomorrow for a fashion show. Since I can’t bring all of you with me (although it looks like I’ll be able to live blog the event), we are giving away 3 HP wireless optical mice with the Vivienne Tam peony design.
It’s ready to use, with a micro USB receiver, and batteries. Apparently you can’t even get these in the U.S. Pero, sorry Apple heads (this even applies to me), the mouse only works with Windows.
The first three comments with email addresses will win.
That’s yours truly at a reading last month and no I am not looking into my makeup case to read poetry. I am reading off the HP Mini 1000 Vivienne Tam edition sent to me to test out and review.
Netbooks are all the rage now and after a few weeks of playing around with this one I can see why. The HP Mini 1000 Vivienne Tam edition is super light and portable and yes it’s pretty too, with is red background/purple peony cover design.
I don’t care much about the pretty pero when others see me using it, they notice, and usually want it. Pero pretty comes at a cost.

What are people paying more attention to than the politics? The fashion pues! Michelle Obama chose Cubana designer Isabel Toledo to wear for the inauguration earlier today.
Toledo, a New York designer who immigrated to the U.S. from Cuba when she was eight, didn’t know that Obama picked her outfit until watching the TV and told the Times that 13 people worked on clothes—”Chinese ladies, Polish ladies, Spanish ladies”—and added, “We’re all grateful for this opportunity, and we don’t even have a PR person!”
I met Isabel Toledo and her husband last year at an event for El Museo del Barrio and they definitely are cutting edge even if Mrs. Obama’s dress was vintage looking.
I liked Michelle Obama’s dress. Did you?

“Jewtinos”, people of Latino and Jewish origin, aren’t a huge demographic for marketers, and therefore the door is left wide open for those looking to cater to customers wanting specialized products that represent this ethnicity and/or faith combination. Enter Adriana Lopez, founder of the new clothing line Jewtina, who is making clothes that reflect Latino Jewish culture.
“I’m very proud to be Jewish and also to be Latina, but I never found anything anywhere that allowed me to express both of these sentiments,” Lopez told EFE. Born in Los Angeles, the fruit of a marriage between a Colombian father and a Mexican mother, both of Jewish descent, Lopez said she felt the need to creat something that would distinguish people like her.“I always joked, telling people that I was Jewtina, and one day my husband, who’s Cuban, told me I should register the brand and I did, said the 35 year-old businesswoman.
Adriana sees opportunity in this market, not only in the U.S. but also throughout Latin America, in countries with sizable Jewish populations, such as Argentina and Brasil.

While the protagonist of the shoe toss seen round the world, Muntadar al-Zaidi, remains in jail and is by many accounts being tortured, there seems to be more debate as to where the shoe came from and how people can get one.
Some say the shoe is from Lebanon, others say it’s from Iraq, and a Turkish company is claiming it’s model 271 is THE shoe.
Though most shoes commonly available in Iraq are factory-made in China, Mr. Zaidi’s brother dismissed such reports, as well as those claiming the shoes came from Turkey or Lebanon:
“One hundred percent they are Iraqi-made shoes,” Udai al-Zaidi told Reuters. “His shoes are not Chinese, nor Turkish.”
Udai said they came from the Baghdad factory of Iraqi shoemaker Alaa Haddad, viewed as among the country’s best.
Meanwhile, Turkish newspaper Yeni Safak ran a front-page story — with accompanying headline, “Made in Turkey,” — stating that the shoes were consistent with a design by Turkish businessman Ramazan Baydan:
Baydan said he had designed the style in 1999, and orders from Iraq had increased by 100% since the Bush incident.
“If it had hit Bush’s head it wouldn’t have hurt him,” he said of his shoe, apparently referring to the softness of the leather.
Lebanese newspaper as-Safir also ran a front-page story with a photo showing Zaidi during a recent visit to Beirut with the headline, “Did he buy the shoes in Beirut?”

4 Dec 2008A few Latino designers have submitted sketches of what their vision for Michelle Obama’s inaugural gown is.
My favorite is this one from Carolina Herrera.
