I love living in New York City in the summer. Yes it’s hot and humid but the city offers some of the best free entertainment around. This fin de semana is jampacked with Latino events, thanks in large part to the Latin Alternative Music Conference. I hope some of you can make it. Maybe even you’ll find me!!
Tonight: In Brooklyn’s lovely Prospect Park bandshell Spain’s The Pinker Tones, Monterrey’s acclaimed vocalist Chetes (of Zurdok and Vaquero fame) and Mexico’s popular alterna-rockers, Zoé (and the suggested donation is only $3). For directions click here.
Calle 13 is playing in Times Square at the Nokia Theater.
Brooklyn’s a little far for me and I didn’t get Calle 13 tix so I’ll be staying closer to home in Queens to catch a little Brazilian flavor via the Queens Museum of Art Passport Fridays.

Hollywood has been buzzing about an Oscar nod for Pedro Almodóvar’s Volver since Cannes. Most of thought it was a given, but we were wrong. Almodóvar (who missed the Golden Globes this year) has been passed over and his film has garnered only one nomination, that of Penelope Cruz:
With the nomination of Penelope Cruz to the Best Actress category, the protagonist of Volver becomes the first Spanish actress to be nominated for this award. The precedent was set by Javier Bardem, who, in 2001, was nominated in the Best Actor category.
In happier news, Mexico can celebrate the multiple nominations of its paisanos. Alejandro González Iñárritu‘s Babel and Guillermo Del Toro‘s Pan’s Labyrinth have been nominated for numerous awards, and once again Argentino Gustavo Santolalla is in the running for his amazing score.

JLo‘s got a new TV dance show out, and so does ex hubby Cris Judd: coincidence? I think not:
Judd’s show is the reality competition “Dirty Dancing” on the Women’s Entertainment cable channel, airing Wednesdays at 10 p.m. EST. Lopez is producing MTV’s “DanceLife,” about six aspiring dancers struggling to make it. The eight-episode series premieres Jan. 15 at 10:30 p.m.Judd’s show was inspired by the ’80s classic “Dirty Dancing,” starring
Jennifer Grey as rich girl Baby and Patrick Swayze as poor dance instructor Johnny. The premise: Eighteen women compete at a summer camp for a dance contract and the right to play Baby — to whichever professional ballroom dancer becomes Johnny — during the finale.
