While Communities Denounce S-Comm, White House Sends its Latina Spokesmodel to Defend It

A spokesmodel is a spokesperson whose physical appearance contributes to brand equity.
When I think of Latina spokesmodels, I think of the women of Sabado Gigante : leggy, tetona, culona bottle blonde white women smiling holding up the next product we just have to have. They are stereotypical examples of what Latinidad should be and in general mass audiences comsume that image, internalize that identity, as much as whatever dishwashing soap the jingle is asking us to purchase.

Cecilia Muñoz, the Director of Intergovernmental Affairs at the White House, plays an equivalent role well in Latino politics. She has proven to be the Latina spokesmodel for Obama’s immigration policy, prioritizing deportations over any executive action that could be taken and attempting to sell this destructive product to us in English and Spanish.

In response to the coordinated protests across the country happening against the expansion of the Secure Communities deportation policy, the White House officially responded through a post, with Muñoz’s name, on the official White House Blog.

The title of the post, In the Debate Over Immigration and Deportations, the Facts Matter, implies that the protesters, organizations and community members are lying about the impact of Secure Communities. In other words : potential Latino voters – the White House doesn’t believe you.

Their is a call growing for Cecilia Muñoz to resign from her position. Many feel that she is incapable of stepping back and actually listening to criticisms. Some may say she is simply doing her job and that Latinos should be happy to have someone in the White House. We are told to wait until November of 2012 and let the election sort it out, not to personalize the issue. That this S-Comm is part of a larger immigration policy strategy and that Muñoz is a genius and has done much in terms of immigration.
I counter that asking how many deportations past the one million mark will we be at in 2012. Is this level of deception acceptable because it is coming from the Democratic Party and not the GOP? I am pretty certain that those whose loved ones are being deported take the issue very personally.

This is not about quitate tu pa’ponerme yo. This is not about careerism. Certainly this is about a policy that is destroying families under the cover of taking care of the “bad guys”. Cecilia Muñoz can keep selling with a smile, a service that is harmful to our communities, or she can keep it real and resign.

Thanks for the post Mala. Where did she come from anyway? It’s a real question, I’m curious about her background and what supposedly prepared her for her current position..

“We are told to wait until November of 2012 and let the election sort it out..” How sad. If everyone waited to get things done, nothing would get done. I wonder if Ms. Munoz has ever seen a family ripped broken after deportation of a loved one.

Hola Sabina. She came from NCLR actually which well may explain alot. Ok no that was mean. Actually many people who know her for years have expressed surprise at how she has changed. She may have had her heart in the right place at some point but seems like the White House made her lose it

Ms. Maegan La Mala,

From the title of your piece, it seems you are upset at the the White House is not responding to activists’ outcry against the program (though, Ms. Napolitano’s memo to Sen. Durbin, et.al. seems to be changing prosecutorial discretion priorities–which would signal, that S-Comm priorities might, in time, change, also). Why not just go to the source and ask for Pres. Obama’s resignation?

To be clear though, and I will write a piece responding specifically to the memo you reference, there has actually not been a change in policy in terms of deportations. Muñoz was chosen for the job by Obama thus her choice is to keep being used by Obama as the Latina face/name of his deportation policy or resign. As for Obama, since he was elected, the option is for people to not elect him. Different process

As for my name. It has nothing to do with my positions specific to this issue. It is a name I have used for nearly 14 years now and was given to me by my mentor. I don’t feel I need to prove my badness to anyone. I wasn’t elected or politically appointed.

Yet again politicians — as always, Democrats — and their minions telling POC to wait, hold-tight, be quiet, be patient, be calm and don’t forget to vote for them. Yuck. At least the GOP does not pretend to give a crap about us.

Banks (among other well-heeled interest groups) did not have to wait or be quiet to get huge benefits. Latinos are not asking for anything special or expensive. Ending SCOMM is asking them to end federal racial-profiling that targets Latinos.

This administration has said many times they cannot get things done for Latinos with a GOP Congress. In that case, what is the advantage to having a Democrat as president at all?

I think some things you said about Celia were uncalled for, ugly in nature really and for some, it distracts from the valid points you raise. You are right though, it is insulting and aggravating when the Latina nearest the President refuses to advocate and only operates as a mouthpiece for the official position on Latino issues.

We need to remember that her job is to convey the “official Latino perspective” (as the WH envisions it) to WHITES, not to Latinos. Voters and interest groups can feel good about agreeing with the Latina as they rail on about immigration. She legitimizes their POV, and they keep their liberal cred b/c they agree with the Latina who thinks we need to get rid of the illegals! What a BS game of racial politics.

Hola Spike and thanks for your comment. See I disagree with you Spike in terms of what Cecilia’s role is. Over and over again, when people, specifically DREAMers have asked for something from the White House, Cecilia is put in the chair on the Spanish language networks. When she is on Univision she is not speaking to whites. She is speaking to my neighbors who watch Al Punto while they are folding their laundry at the local spot (that’s where I usually end up catching her).

I do agree that the strategy the Dems are using is telling us to be patient and quiet. This message was reiterated last night on a call sponsored by RI4A with Congressman Gutierrez.

Dangerous politics all around

Thanks for writing this, Maegan. What makes Cecilia Muñoz so dangerous is that leaders, particularly in the Spanish media, trust her because of her former work as a migrant advocate. When folks like yourself and Mario stand up and oppose what she’s doing it makes clear that she no longer represents the community as she once did. Now, she’s representing an adminstration that is deporting more people than this planet has ever seen and forcing one of the most dangerous programs S-Comm that the migrant community has ever seen. Thanks again for writing this, Maegan, it’s extremely important.

Fair enough, I watch Al Punto, Noticias Univision, Aqui y Ahora (que wow last night con Oscar, but that is another story…..) and you are right, she does get the mic to talk to us. What about this revised view of her role vis-a-vis Latinos: her role is to tell us what to do, rather than convey our views or advocate for us to the White House? I still think she has some of that other role (Latino voice to whites that parrots WH preferences above any other views donors may have heard) that is targeted to whites. But, you are both right, I was too simple in my characterization of her role with Latinos.

Just a comment, because I want a space to say this: for me, it is too late. I am glad that some families will not be torn apart, but people I know were deported. People I know were sent to the most violent places on the planet right now (Matamoros, specifically) when they were deported. People I care about are trying to figure out how to sponsor their parents, adopt their younger siblings and deal with all kinds of grown-up issues because their parents were deported. There is no worse offense than tearing apart an intact, healthy family.

If Joe Arpaio stopped his racist procedures, I would be glad, but I would not vote for him. I don’t think Obama is a racist hateful jerk (like Arapio is). Even so, his policies have caused tremendous heartbreak, grief and difficulties for people I care about very much and it is totally reasonable for me to be disinterested in supporting him. I know I am not the only one. Don’t care how many Spanish ads or Latino-friendly events they host, the damage is done.

I like the parallel Maegan draws comparing politics to entertainment, long legged culonas, cheap comedians and clowns to politicians and spokespuppets..

Now that’s entertainment!

I mean let’s not forget who owns the studios, the financiers and executive producers..they control the money, the writers, script and cast, they run the show folks..
oh yeah! and we shouldn’t ever forget central casting..

Let’s see for the popular show “Fraude Gigante”.. they put out a call for people of color to play the roles of president, cabinet members,spokespeople..etc etc etc..

“must be funny, gracious,be able put on a convincing straight face on command, parroting phony slogans such as”Hope and Change” in an endless loop similar to “drink Pepsi, drink Coca Cola”
(without cracking up),able to seamlessly and effortlessly manipulate, deceive and use people with a smile,a wave, shooting hoops, eating tacos, drinking Tequila, singing popular Mexican folksongs like La Cucaracha etc etc etc.. ”

So we get high paid actors and actresses, clowns to fool the ignorant, the foolish ,the duped masses..and yes..to also entertain..not so much different from the tall blonde tetona Gueras attracting attention collecting fainting fans, strutting their stuff on the Latino version of “Hee Haw”..

I love the way Maegan calls their bluff, calls out politics and politicians for what they really stand for these days…cheap gaudy entertainment..bread and circuses, let them eat cake, fiddle while Rome burns and all that kind of stuff..
Which leads us all to ask a question.. a very serious question to be seriously considered..

Do we go along with this absurd farce, take this show, these bunch of frauds seriously or do we break out of this box they have manufactured for us,elevate our consciousness to a higher level of understanding, smash illusions, remove the veil of suspension of disbelief replacing them with an analysis which goes beyond being pathetic believers, dupes, suckers, consumers of political soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toilet paper?

Wow so many comments this morning! Buenos dias and I’m glad I had my cafe.

Kyle : Thanks for your support and for your work.

Spike : Upon further reflection – we may both be right. I think I don’t focus as much on what the message is to non-Latinos because it’s not my primary interest nor is it the interest of the people where I live but you are probably correct in your assumption that she plays the role of acceptable/ good Latina which is a role that is critically important in drawing support for deportation policies.
I also agree Spike- that it may be too late – not to mention that there really hasn’t been a change in policy.

Ay Chicano Future Tense – long time no see. It’s all entertainment well rather marketing and I feel part of a dangerous larger trend happening in Latino Communities equating marketing a message with movement building.

Check out Jorge Ramos towing the White House line, now:

This is why Cecilia is dangerous.

ugh and why Jorge Ramos is dangerous. Jeez. It’s just blatant misinformation as there have been no suspensions yet based on this announcement.
