8 Feb 2011So the political rumor mill has it that my own Senator, Biometric Chuck Schumer, and Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham are teaming up to work on some sort of immigration reform deal.
Why does it feel like we’ve heard this before? Oh yeah because we have. Since 2009, immigrant communities have been hearing that Senator Schumer was going to be the “champion” of immigration reform. And remember how far that got us? His “blueprint” which was far from an actual plan included :
a requirement that all U.S. workers verify their identity through fingerprints or an eye scan and he rejected the euphemism “undocumented workers,” he said: “Illegal immigration is wrong — plain and simple.”
Doesn’t sound like my champion. Then Schumer delayed, delayed again (this time with Graham). And then all talk of CIR essentially disappeared from Schumer’s mouth, even with young DREAMers on hunger strike outside his Midtown Manhattan office.
Oh and then the state whose interest Schumer is supposed to represent, NY, adopts Secure Communities.
Pardon me if I’m not engraving a trophy for Schumer.

Don’t forget that Graham was(will always be if it gets more votes) also all about revoking birthright citizenship.

Which makes the idea of him working with Schumer even more bullshit they are trying to sell

Everybody deserves a second chance. This time, Schumer and Graham cannot afford to let the “Undocumented” community down. If so, it will cost them in 2012. Pero por ahora, si se puede! El fracaso no es un option.

Seems like it is all just bullshit. The political system is in dire straits. Stagnancy of immigration reform is just one symptom, and not even the biggest one.
In my woeful days of unemployment, I’ve researched quite a bit on what led to the economic crisis and what has been done to ensure it doesn’t occur again. It’s the biggest signal of systemic failure.
I am no conspiracy theorist, but the evidence points to a system gutted by an uber-elite amalgamation of government with private actors whose primary interests are power and wealth.
And there is no one to do anything about it.

I agree that this is just BS. They have no intention of passing CIR. This whole thing is such a mess.

The thing is, @Viktoria it’s more than a second chance as my post points out. In all the years that Schumer has been ordained as the CIR champion he has yet to present a bill. All we get are bs proposals and blueprints that cater to and use the right wing/Republican language. Es una verguenza and it’s disrepectful. Fool me once…
That said, there is alot of talk of the alternate possibility being voting Republican come 2012. For me, that is not a viable option either. I am nit a one issue voter which is why I am more that happy to vote third/fourth/ millionth party

[...] I just wanted to make that fact clear because what we seem to be seeing alot of from the beltway is finger pointing at Republicans for hardline positions on immigration, while Democrats, with an eye towards the 2012 election, pretend to care about immigration, again. [...]
